FLL airport - Shooting today at 1 pm - 9 wounded

Our local CBS affiliate (WBZ) just said on our news

- that the shooter was in the National Guard

- that his brother said that in 2016, he told people he was being "forced to fight for ISIS"

- that he had child porn charges against him a few years back*

- and that the guns and ammo he used were transported on the airline legally

* ETA there may be some confusion about the porn charges as that could be another person of the same name

There are also more reports that he served for a year in Iraq and after returning was treated for a mental disorder which he has been treated for off and on since. I would think the whole ISIS thing (which I'm not seeing as confirmed yet) could have stemmed from his mental state and not actual ties to them.

Yes

My son in law and his company fly in and out of that airport every 2-3weeks for work. Most of the crew flew in yesterday, into that exact terminal. If that had been today, some of them might not be here now
:( Son in law and rest of the crew are driving down on Sunday, his wife doesn't feel safe with him flying anymore , now she says she had a premonition something was going to happen. She was right , just on a different day. You never know!

Snakes would definitely be hard but didn't stop my papa from trying.

There are shot shells designed to go in handguns. I saw some at a sporting good store years ago and asked what they were for. At short range, they'll spray about a foot wide. Not terribly damaging to anything except a snake or a small rodent.

I find disturbing that he told someone that he was being forced to work for ISIS so to speak. I mean did they really investigate that? Since being in the military did he have a gun that was issued to him? So many question that have no full answers to yet. So many reports coming in and tweets. Cant believe everything you read or hear right now. I mean they wanted everyone to believe their was a second shooter and there was not. Once everything gets settled down, hopefully the full correct reports on this person will come out. Right now prayers for the victims and people around are in order for me anyway.

Yikes! My older dsis was just in that baggage area a day ago!
Scary, some of the things going on. :crazy2:

My best friend in the world is flying into Fort Lauderdale Sunday......this is scary. I don't feel like anywhere is safe, which is the worst feeling.

My DH and twin DDs were supposed to fly into there for a tourney this weekend. The coach cancelled going to the tourney when the team was down too many players due to injuries. Cancelled about 10 days ago. I am vey thankful. I was crying as I watched the footage, today, of all the folks running out of the airport. I was thinking how it would feel if my family were there today. My heart breaks for all involved.

Issued guns don't go with you off base.

... and yet he legally had a gun.

There's a process for denying firearm ownership on the basis of mental incapacity. But, treatment in & of itself doesn't trigger the denial. Sadly, one such individual who HAD been declared incompetent was the Va Tech shooter, but the state failed to inform the FBI & BATF. He was not legally permitted to purchase a firearm, but passed the background check anyway.

BIL still on the plane. Apparently the police are slowly letting small groups of people off at a time and escorting them under armed guard back to the terminal. It's been pretty awful.

ETA: sorry, not back to the terminal. They aren't allowing anyone e into the terminal. They're bussing them elsewhere.

I didn't read that but it would be interesting. I have to admit even with my stance on gun ownership I have always felt a little uneasy with people's ability to carry shells and guns in check baggage. If this is the case I imagine the TSA won't allow ammo in check bags any more since the gun is useless with out the ammo.

I could be wrong, but I was always under the impression ammo & the firearm must be in separate cases. I've never checked a firearm, but I have checked ammo.

It can be in your checked luggage or in the same case as the firearm just not loaded in the firearm.

So, I sometimes watch "Border Security" (I know, I am very intellectual). Anyway, one of their favourite things to show is Americans crossing from Washington into BC on their way to Alaska with guns that are legal in Washington and Alaska but not BC (or anywhere in Canada). They are not allowed across the border. I have no idea what type of gun this man used or what his actual flight was but if it were Alaska-Canada-FLL, would the gun have to be legal in Canada to be in checked luggage?

Not quoting you because I think you'll know the answer - just because it made me think of the question.

When flying, the gun only has to be legal where you depart & disembark since you will only possess it at these points.

There was a big stink a couple years back when a hunter got stranded in NJ where he was only supposed to connect. The airline cancelled all flights & returned checked bags to all the passengers, then the airport closed. The hunter didn't possess a NJ firearms license & he was arrested at his hotel.

If flying US-Canada-US (which this man would have been doing had he connected in Canada) you have to collect your luggage at the connecting airport (for most airports - some, I think, just make you id a picture of it now). Which would mean that you posses it at that point. And you go through Canadian customs - which would/should stop a banned firearm.
