flip flops or thongs?

When I as a kid, we called 'em thongs. (Our next door neighbor invariably referred to them as "throng sandals", but then she wore a "pheasant blouse" too.) Mrs. Tex informs me that when she was a kid, they call 'em "go-aheads". Maybe because you couldn't back up wearing them?

We both call 'em flip flops now, since that's the common term and we've sort of gotten used to it.

Zorries? Never heard that one before.

Same here, they were called thongs when I was a kid. Of course I call them flip flops now since the word 'thong' has a very different meaning than it used to.

I called them thongs until that became a term for underwear that go up your b*tt.

Now I call them flip flops, but I remember people calling them flip flops and thongs pretty interchangably. At that time, underwear that went up your crack was called a G-string. But I can see how the name "thong" evolved from shoes to underwear. One goes between your toes, one between your cheeks.

I call them flip-flops or sandals. In Australia....I should ask her what they call thong underwear

I call them thongs but then I'm in Australia. If I was looking for what most of you thongs, I would be looking for a G-string.

And I remember going to college in the late '80s, meeting several Hawaiians (my college here in Tacoma has (or at least had) a relatively high number of students from there) and learning that they called those shoes "slippers".

Flip flops. I have heard of "thongs" as shoes, but don't use the work myself.

But I don't like them at all. I always role my ankles or get them caught on something.

Every summer, we get the rules for cubscout camp, and it says, "No thongs."

My friend and I crack up. How would they know? Do they do a thong check on the first day? Are you only in trouble if you have low cut shorts on a hike?

Flip flops. If they are dressier or cost more I call them sandals.
