When I as a kid, we called 'em thongs. (Our next door neighbor invariably referred to them as "throng sandals", but then she wore a "pheasant blouse" too.) Mrs. Tex informs me that when she was a kid, they call 'em "go-aheads". Maybe because you couldn't back up wearing them?
We both call 'em flip flops now, since that's the common term and we've sort of gotten used to it.
