flip flops or thongs?

Basic summer footwear, but when you enter a store and ask for thongs they give you that look

Flip flops or "flaps." Thongs these days are worn farther north.

Personally I can't stand the things (flip flops) but my girls live in them this time of year.

We called them zorries when I was a kid in the 50's but now I refer to them as flip flops.

I had never heard of calling that footwear "thongs" until I went on message boards. I wouldn't call them that anyway, since thong=underwear (or rather, pretend underwear) so it's confusing.

Actually, in the 18th century, women went bare bottom. It's the 19th century that bloomers came into fashion (and had crotch slits). Prior to that women wore chemises that came down over their hips under their outer clothing.

I used to have a full set of antique undergear...one piece chemise/ bloomers (with slit), and the full length slip. Very thick linen. I used to wear it as a dress quite a bit in the 80s. Loved that thing. I actually still have it, but it had a terrible mishap in 1986 and ended up with a huge slit in the skirt. Very sad, that.

I call mine "flips" my DH calls them tongs not thongs but tongs. I always chuckle when he says that.

I call them flip-flops or sandals. In Australia, they call them thongs. Imagine my surprise when I was looking at shoes in a surf shop and a very built, tanned, good-looking sales guy tells me "there are thongs in the back of the store if you're interested ..."

I guess the look on my face was pretty priceless until my cousin let me know that they were flip flops and not the tiny underwear. I should ask her what they call thong underwear

When I was young we called them thongs. Flip-flops had one strap and didn't go between your toes (I think they're called "slides" now.)

These days I call them flip-flops to avoid confusion. I can't stand to wear them, but my DD loves them.

I remember when I was in high school a friend of mine was wearing flip-flops to school (we weren't supposed to) and a teacher stopped to tell her that we weren't allowed to wear thongs to school. She asked me "Oh no is my underwear showing"

I call them thongs but then I'm in Australia. If I was looking for what most of you thongs, I would be looking for a G-string.
