I'm thisclose to getting a Dell :) Just a few things I'm not too sure about. Should I get a flat screen or just a reg. 17 in one?

Also a DVD-ROM drive will play a DVD right? Will the CD-RW drive play one too?

I appreciate any help. They have specials that are ending tonight. I know, nothing like waiting until the last moment :)

CDRWs won't play DVDs unless you get a DVD CDRW...do they make those? And if you can afford it, get a flat screen...THEY RULE!!!

I agree -- if you can get a flat screen, go for it! They are so cool! Much crisper in my experience. :)

DD, I pm'd you, so let me know if we can help out.

Flat screens drive up the cost, but apparently they are the "thing" right now, cutting edge I suppose.

I don't have a Dell, but I have a Sony flat screen and I love it :)

I use a flat screen at work and a regualr monitor at home. The flat screen blows the regualr moniotr away!

Hi Debbie,

A 17" Flat Panel Monitor (FPM) gives you true 17 display area, where the 17" CRT monitor is 16". There is no flicker on a LCD, so your eyes don't tire as quickly. I would go with a flat panel. IMHO, they are much better. The CRTs will be gone in a few years.

As far as the DVD/CDRW drive, you can get a combo drive that does everything. The only problem is that to copy a disc, it goes quicker with 2 drives. If you put a DVD drive in one bay and a CDRW in the second bay, you can copy at the highest speed without going to the hard drive first.

Glad to hear you are buying a Dell. Maybe the stock price will respond to all the DIS'rs buying machines. LOL

Do you mean flat screen (same depth as a regular monitor, but screen isn't curved) or flat pannel (the screen isn't curved & it's depth is about 1-3 inches) ?

Hmmm, good question Jeff, I will have to look into that a little further. :)

I just bought some 18" LCD monitors for us at work. I can't wait until they get here!! I also bought a bunch of other cool stuff, but I am most excited about replacing our monitors.....

I have a dell that I got at christmas (wonder f-i-l) with the flat screen and I LOVE it!!!!!!!!! My eyes hardly ever get tired anymore. I can see all my disney pictures from the other side of the room as they flick by on my screen saver. It's really great. I also have both a cd dvd rom and a cdr rw. We play the dvd's in the top (first one) and copy to the second. Good luck, I really love my Dell.

You can copy DVD's onto blank CD's if you have the 2 separate drives??
I'm liking this even more :) Looks like flat panel monitor is the way to go.

I just bought a Viewsonic 15-inch LCD monitor last night, and I LOVE it. It's so cool to have all this room on my desk... And the monitor comes with a wall-mount, so you can hang it on the wall if you want.
("Just like the Osbournes!" I blurted out when the salesperson mentioned that detail. I'm such a geek.)

UPDATE!!! We put in our customized order online with Dell on 7/24, and noticed today that it shipped out last night!!! So it is on its way to us, with the 19" flat panel screen!!!! WOOWEE, can't wait to try it out.

I'm so excited about all the good posts about Dell that have come of this discussion.

Have a Dell .. and a flat screen .. and I love it!

Only if you had a DVD/RW, which are still quite pricey, Debbie. You would be able to duplicate CD's to a CD with a CD/RW drive and a seperate CD/DVD drive. Confused, LOL?? :)

Another vote here for the flat screen...........so much easier on your eyes!

I bought a Samsung 17" LCD monitor on Sunday. My old 17" CRT Trinitron died on me the night before. I've been looking at getting a flat panel for a few months now, but decided to wait after I spent a hefty sum on my new Dell computer. In any case, I love my new monitor... looks so much nicer than my old one and I love the fact that it doesn't hog up all my desk space! :)
