Is there an escape from the line once the ride begins to load? My husband and I would like to go through the line with our kids to see the castle but we're not too keen about riding.

Yes, right before loading. The TMs are there directing you right before the sorting hat. Tell them you want to leave, the door you walk through comes out where the ride exits.
