My DD 11 has just been fitted with metal fixed braces across her top four front teeth three weeks before our Disney/Universal 17 day holiday:headache:

She does not know about the trip yet, its a surprise. My question is how is she going to cope not being able to eat or drink all of those wonderful sugary delights that they have to offer? No funnel cake!!
Has anyone else had to cope with this, and what are good things to eat that wont break them, without suagar?

I remember when I got my braces they didn't hurt when I first got them for very long maybe a day or two. I took tylenol for the pain. BUT after that I was able to eat okay. I don't see why if she breaks up the funnel cake she couldn't eat it:confused3

My son, age 10, has the same type of braces. He was sore the first week or so, but now can eat pretty much whatever he wants. His only limitations are gum and chewy candy. Not sure why your daughter couldn't have a funnel cake.

I've never had braces but why can't she eat funnel cakes and other desserts? I know gum and I think hard candy are supposed to be no-no's but funnel cake isn't especially hard. Will she be bringing her toothbrush to the parks so she can brush after every meal?

My Orthadontist said no sugary sweets as it will stain the teeth in and around where they are fixed. She is Very good at brushing her teeth.Maybe she was just being over cautious:confused3
I dont want to be mean and say "NO" all the time, but also i dont want eroded teeth

HI!!! As a mom with my 3rd in braces....she can definately have the cake...The worry is if they dont brush properly, when the braces are removed...the teeth will be discoloured, and this isnt fixable....My older dd had braces for 19 months, and my son for 39 long months, and both have beautiful teeth that are completely white...i can tell you my son cheated and ate everything (except whole apples) with his on as he had them on almost 3 1/2 years....his teeth are gorgeous...as long as she brushes and keeps them clean, things are good...all orthodontists say completely different things...mine are allowed to eat things others say are a big no no, and vice versa...good luck...we are a year away from being brace free and payment free...yah :cool1:

Sugar is fine, just brush the teeth good. They can't have hard candies because it might break a bracket, but as far as sugary foods go, they were fine. Her braces are off now and no stains!

no a dentist or an orhto here, but I think the sugary they mean, is Soda, Kool Aid, Hawaiin punch. Anything in general that will stain your teeth. Hope you have a great trip.

My dd13 has had braces for a year (as has all of her friends), and they eat anything and everything. :confused3 They chew gum, eat popcorn, drink soda... She brushes well (according to her dentist), and has a waterpick.

I've never heard of kids giving up sweets for the years they are wearing braces - I know I didn't!

Ditto. DS12 just got his braces off & he ate anything & everything. If you truly follow the list of no-no's they give you, you and your child will be miserable. I know we would have been.

Never heard the no sugar rule ever....:confused3.

DS only avoided sugar gum and sticky candy. Three weeks out she will be fine!

Too much sugar is never good but at WDW I say let her have what she wants!!!

Never heard of it either....but sugar-free gum..whatever the non-sticky kind...is actually good to chew after you get them tightened. Helps ease the soreness.

ANY food left stuck around the braces will not be good. Best to brush teeth after eating any little thing. A pain, but necessary.

They have those specialty brushes that fit better between and under the wires/brackets. Just make sure she takes one of those in her daypack. Will be super easy to pop in the bathroom after eating to brush.

I would not worry about. No non-sugar free gum and no chewy candy. I ate and drank what I wanted for the most part and I wore braces off and on for 6 years.

I don't think she will be limited at all, unless things have changed since I had braces. I wasn't restricted with any foods or drinks, w/ the exception of when I was sore after first putting them on.

Hi all, so here's what I would say, being an orthodontist's daughter and a former otho assistant: The staining they are talking about is in fact a "stain" or a lesion where the enamel has worn down. They are essentially the start of a cavity. Some people who do not care for their teeth well while in braces let food and plaque sit against the brackets for long periods of time and a white, chalky spot will appear around the bracket, under the plaque and gunk. These white spots are irreversible and it's so sad to see beautiful straight teeth once the braces come off, with white marks all over them! Funnel cakes should be no problem. In 3 weeks from now, she will be feeling fine and hopefully her mouth will be more adjusted to the bands and brackets that are tearing her mouth up right now. Be sure that she takes plenty of wax with her and that she brushes frequently, and really well! Stay away from things that are sticky and chewy, definitely don't let her eat the caramel apples! Help to watch when she brushes that you can't see any white, fuzzy stuff around her brackets after she's brushed and she'll be in business. Have a great trip!
