Five Guys vent

I just had to get this off my chest. My oldest was visiting over spring break and the other night she wanted to eat at Five Guys. So I loaded up 3 kiddos and headed over there. We all went in to order.

Then I had to RUSH out of there. Apparently part of the ambience of this fast food place is whole peanuts in large boxes that people can take and eat. My youngest has a peanut allergy (thankfully has to ingest it, not just have it flying around). I had to quickly remove him to wait in the carseat, then get the rest of the order to go and get out of there.

Which leaves me to ask: what are they thinking? I'm not some peanut nazi, but I'm certainly more sensitive now that I have a child with an allergy (he has an epi pen just in case). With all the people out there with peanut allergies, plus their families, it seems to me that they are severely restricting the number of potential customers. I know we won't be headed back.

Vent over. Other to say: they are not as good as In and Out, even though they try to fashion themselves after it.

Thanks. Feeling better now. ;)

I can't figure out the hoopla with them. I have tried them twice and it was nasty. Wendy's makes a better burger than them. Also, cold fries are nasty.

I don't get the draw either.:confused3 They are Steak and Shake burgers. I have gone a couple of times and eh.

I think the number of people without peanut allergies far outweighs the number of people with them. Haven't been to Five Guys but our local Texas Roadhouse has barrels of peanuts while you wait, on tables, shells on the floor, and the place is always packed.

Agree that it'd be frustrating to walk in there and not know about the peanuts though. They ought to put a sign on the door to let customers know ahead of time.

I love them, and I have never gotten cold fries, in fact I have burned myself on most occasions, also our local Wendy's is horrible, they can't get anything right. Anyway, different strokes. OP I am sorry about your kiddo's allergy and I have often thought about what would happen if someone walked in and had a severe peanut allergy. It seems to me that most people that go there no the routine, because the first thing they do is grab the peanuts.

I feel your pain, mine is with dairy, DS can't have it, it makes him throw up, TMI isn't it. lol Anyway, his teacher decided at the last minute to have a pizza party for them after there FCAT tests. They didn't get to go to the cafeteria, luckily I had made his lunch that day, but he couldn't get anything extra, so there sat all the kids munching on their special lunch, while mine ate his lunch from home. If she had told me I could have gone and gotten him something. I wasn't too happy.

I think they are thinking that People like peanuts. I have never been, but I knew that peanuts were a part of the Five Guys experience.

People like peanuts. I'm willing to bet that there are far more people NOT allergic to peanuts than those who are.

They also have a sign on the door saying that there are peanuts in open containers there.

one last thing, you do know that their french fries are cooked in peanut oil, right ?

I love them!! I haven't ever gotten anything cold, and the one time they messed up my order just a little bit (which I took to go), they bought myself and DH our entire meal the next time we came in, even though I tried to insist they didn't have to.

At our store, there are signs all over the doors warning about the peanuts before you ever walk inside. There are also signs inside the store asking that nobody brings any peanuts outside of the store, to avoid the possibility of bringing them in contact with someone that has an allergy. I think they're being quite responsible about it. :confused3

BTW, don't go to Texas Roadhouse. They also have peanuts all over the place.

I see your point. Considering how dangerous that particular allergy can be even if breathed in for some people, it is irresponsible of the establishments who do this to not have a sign on the door stating:

Warning LOTS of peanuts in side.

They could even make it cutesy so as not to be detrimental to the many people who enjoy peanuts.

Every single Five Guys I've been to has these signes all over.

I agree with everything you said. I've never been to, or even heard of, Five Guys but I have been to a Texas Roadhouse and Lonestar where they have peanuts setting out and shells all over the floor, etc. I think that any restaurant that does that should definitely have signs on the doors though, to warn people who are allergic.

Ours do have signs warning of the peanuts.:thumbsup2

I've never been to one but I hear really good things about it. I'm sorry that it's not a healthy place for your son. Obviously the peanuts are a shtick for them and it's a business decision to keep them rather than remove them for the 1.3% of the population which is allergic.

I've never been to Five Brothers, but we have a restaurant here like that - Logan's Roadhouse. People eat the peanuts and throw the shells on the floor. I never thought about those with peanut allergies. I guess they know about it and don't go there.

If you are going peanut free, you can add Logan's Steakhouse to the list of those restraunts with a peanut barrel.

We have a Five Guys but I don't think there is a sign on the door before a person enters. We don't have that particular issue so I might just not have noticed. We do have Asthma so fragrance is a pretty big problem for us so I feel your pain OP. There is nothing worse then settling your entire family into a place only to have to pick up and leave when a problem pops up. We were just at Universal and my DS12 calls the Royal Pacific "the place that nearly killed me" due to an incident with room fragrance that happened 4 years ago.

I'm curious OP, did your town's Five Guys have a sign up before you walked in?

The two different Five Guys locations I have been to have huge signs on the door warning of the peanuts and cautioning those with allergies. I am really surprised the one you went to didn't.

And I think Five Guys fries are the best, and the burgers are really tasty and the food I've gotten there has always been hot & fresh.

Our Five Guys has signs on the doors and all over the inside warning people that there are peanuts on the premises and they cook their fries in peanut oil. Also signs telling people not to take the peanuts off the premises because of possible allergies in the neighborhood. (their fries are never cold, either ;) )

I'm sorry about your troubles last night, OP, and although we don't have any severe allergies in our family, we have friends who do and I usually sympathize greatly. But I think with the signage that I am used to seeing at Five Guys, they aren't doing anything wrong. Perhaps your Five Guys needs to add some signs?

I know several other restaurants where it's even worse, peanut shells are all over the floor. Yes, they are losing out on the business of peanut-allegeric patrons, but I think every restaurant probably has something that turns off some segment of society, they all survive because there are enough other customers who still like it.

OP, you haven't said whether or not there were signs. Perhaps you missed them? When you left, did you look to see if there were signs?

I'm asking because it is a franchise, and all franchise restaurants have rules about things like this that must be followed. I have a hard time wrapping my brain around the idea that there weren't any signs on the doors.
