Has anyone every booked the fishing trip at the resorts? My DM passed away a year ago and we finally got DD to agree to go to WDW. Mom & dad were owners at Boardwalk and this will be the 1st time back for him since she passed. We are staying at OKW and booked the fishing trip for 7am--figuring the fish might be biting better in the morning. I am a little worried about the experience not being what he and DS really want. They often go fishing and DS thought this would be a great time with Grandpa. We saw a show on the Travel channel about the fishing trip that seemed really awesome. I was just wondering if anyone else had done it. Thanks

This was a long time ago, but DH & I did the fishing trip in Nov of 2000 from the Boardwalk. I don't fish, but it was great! 2 hrs, and 7am was the perfect time, plus we were able to go into the middle of world showcase lagoon. We didn't really catch much due to the time of year, but it was fun and I'd definitely do it again. I'm sure they'll have a great time.

We did it at VWL on Bay Lake a few years ago and it was great. I think it was 2 hours and we caught and released about 25 very nice bass. We had 5 of us plus the guide for about $200 I think. Fished in front of the POLY, GF, Island and MK-which was fun.

I have a 13 year old son who lives to fish. We stay at Disney probably 2 times a year on average, at different times and different DVC properties. Have done the fishing excursion at least (I'm embarrassed to say) 3 times with the son and different folks.

Contrary to popular belief, the fish do not bite first trip in the morning, they bite better on the 10 am trip. We booked one trip from BCV and fished in the lake at EPCOT before EPCOT opened. We caught little, but loved the view. (I don't love fishing that much so I spent more time "viewing"). Hubby and Son went, I believe, from SSR or downtown Disney-- son caught the most fish on that trip, have pictures of an alligator gar, bass of assorted types ans sizes, blue gill and I think he caught a turtle. I would go fishing again from BCV just to go into EPCOT and get the view from the lake.

If you bring your own pole you can go to Fort Wilderness and fish in Bay Lake at several locations. I believe this is true also at OKW, but never did that. I believe you fish in the river at OKW. You can also rent cane poles at FW if you don't have one.( Also, I believe at OKW) My son brought an assortment of plastic bait. We stayed at VWL and he would walk over to FW, fish and walk back. He went fishing every day. The walk is a little over a mile each way.

Mousesaver's has a link to a ticketseller that advertises a trip where they pick you up at the hotel, take you to the ocean put you on a boat and you fish for about 4 hours, but 2 hours is actually spent coming to and from the fishing location. That trip is about $100 Plus per person. If only two people want to go fishing and they love ocean fishing this is probably the way to go.

Excursions at WDW are more than $200 but up to 5 can go. They supply the boat, poles, bait, guide and non alcoholic drinks. They also bait the hooks and take the fish off the hooks if you don't like doing that. Had a female guide who was the best person at casting that I have ever seen.
It does get hot so wear a hat and sunblock even at 7 am. Book ahead, the trips fill up.

Also, if you fish from the shore just remember, "If there are no ducks or birds around, there is probably an alligator lurking somewhere near." Disney removes the large ones, but I really don't want to tangle with a four or five footer either.

Not sure, but if you rent the boats on Bay lake, I think you can fish if you have your own equipment. I saw people doing this. It is all catch and release at WDW. With the fireworks you would not want to eat the fish anyhow.

Not true. We went at 7AM from VWL as mentioned above. Now I cant say we wouldn't have had even better luck after 10AM, but 7AM was great for us.

I have fished 3 times from the Boardwalk and each time we have caught lots of Bass. The ist time out my DS caught a 5 lb + bass. What a treat just off Norway!!!

So you can fish at Ft. Wilderness with your own pole? Is there not a charge if you bring your own pole? I just figured to be able to fish, you would be required to rent their poles.

Want to clarify my statement about fish biting better at 10 am. After a very unsuccessful 7 am fishing trip our guide told us to book at 10 am instead of 7 am because the fish bite better later. Now, living on a lake in Wisconsin, with a kid who has read just about every fishing book he can find, and he fishes in every spare moment, there seems to be fishing intelligence about when fish bite. The local TV station gives a fishing forecast, predicting when the fish will bite based on weather, the moon water temperature and factors that I probably don't even know about. It seems to be somewhat accurate. I don't have time to try and outsmart fish, they are smarter than I, so I go with the advice of "those in the know." When we booked trips early or went fishing early in Central Florida we have not done well, we have generally always had better luck later in the morning, but not in the heat of the day. If someone knows of a fishing forecast in central FL I'd love to know about it as I would check the forecast before planning fishing trips. I have a good time whether or not I catch fish, for me it is the trip, not catching the fish.

No charge with your own pole, however, I don't know where to get bait, so my son brought new artificial bait along. There were people with fresh bait containers, don't know if they brought them from off property or if there is a place to by bait. There were lots of "campers" at FW with their own poles.

The fishing trip is listed on undercovertourist.com The trip seems to leave on Mondays and Thursdays. $106.95 for adults, 77.95 for kids. The trip is listed under "Gator Tours" It is called "Deep Sea Fishing and Lunch." If you go please post a review, I'd like to hear about the trip.

Do you have to have a Florida fishing license--even if it's a temporary? Also, did your son catch much from the shore?

You do not have to have a FL fishing license.

For those of you who have done the excursions, do you tip your captain? I am assuming you do, so I need to make sure DH has cash when he goes with DS next month.

We did for sure. I think a decent amount-its been a while but I think I gave $20 and my BIL also $20. He had a cooler of refreshments, released all the fish and baited all the hooks, drove to the good spots for 2 hours. Very friendly and helpful.

I truly dont know if $40 is a lot, or weak, but we figured he did a lot more for 20% than a lot of wait staff we have encountered.

Thanks! We tipped 20% when we did an IllumiNations cruise, so that's what I was thinking for the fishing excursion, too. :)
