I have a 13 year old son who lives to fish. We stay at Disney probably 2 times a year on average, at different times and different
DVC properties. Have done the fishing excursion at least (I'm embarrassed to say) 3 times with the son and different folks.
Contrary to popular belief, the fish do not bite first trip in the morning, they bite better on the 10 am trip. We booked one trip from BCV and fished in the lake at EPCOT before EPCOT opened. We caught little, but loved the view. (I don't love fishing that much so I spent more time "viewing"). Hubby and Son went, I believe, from SSR or downtown Disney-- son caught the most fish on that trip, have pictures of an alligator gar, bass of assorted types ans sizes, blue gill and I think he caught a turtle. I would go fishing again from BCV just to go into EPCOT and get the view from the lake.
If you bring your own pole you can go to Fort Wilderness and fish in Bay Lake at several locations. I believe this is true also at OKW, but never did that. I believe you fish in the river at OKW. You can also rent cane poles at FW if you don't have one.( Also, I believe at OKW) My son brought an assortment of plastic bait. We stayed at VWL and he would walk over to FW, fish and walk back. He went fishing every day. The walk is a little over a mile each way.
Mousesaver's has a link to a ticketseller that advertises a trip where they pick you up at the hotel, take you to the ocean put you on a boat and you fish for about 4 hours, but 2 hours is actually spent coming to and from the fishing location. That trip is about $100 Plus per person. If only two people want to go fishing and they love ocean fishing this is probably the way to go.
Excursions at WDW are more than $200 but up to 5 can go. They supply the boat, poles, bait, guide and non alcoholic drinks. They also bait the hooks and take the fish off the hooks if you don't like doing that. Had a female guide who was the best person at casting that I have ever seen.
It does get hot so wear a hat and sunblock even at 7 am. Book ahead, the trips fill up.
Also, if you fish from the shore just remember, "If there are no ducks or birds around, there is probably an alligator lurking somewhere near." Disney removes the large ones, but I really don't want to tangle with a four or five footer either.
Not sure, but if you rent the boats on Bay lake, I think you can fish if you have your own equipment. I saw people doing this. It is all catch and release at WDW. With the fireworks you would not want to eat the fish anyhow.
