Hi everyone!!!

Just starting to plan our first trip to FW in March. We are DH 40, DW 39, DS 10, and DS 8. The boys love fishing - even catch & release. Is it worth $230 to do the 2 hour fishing excursion? Also, we have all our own gear. Can we fish from the canals (and catch anything?). What about renting a motorboat and fishing on our own - is that allowed?

Thanks!

You can fish from the canals for free, but catching something can be spotty.

You can't rent boats for fishing other than the excursion ones.

I have never done the fishing excursion, but understand they are great and know where to catch good large mouth bass and you are almost guaranteed of catching something if you do this.

With the young age of your sons I would probably just try the canals and pond at the Meadows. You don't need to catch anything the act and outing just doing is enough IMHO.

My DH fished Jan 07 with Disney. He enjoyed it but really only caught some small bass. This Nov. he chartered with a guy near Lake Toho. ( I think that is the short name) near Kissimee. Anyhow, he caught many large bass. Anywhere from 5 to 8 pounds. It was $260 ish for 6 hours and he loved it. If you want I can give you the name.

Now, at the fort. He didn't catch anything in the canals but enjoyed spending time with the others that where fishing too.

hope this helps

My girls aren't interested in fishing so we haven't done this but I saw something that might be worth looking into if you'll be at WDW on a Sunday:

Junior Fishing Excursions at Walt Disney World Resort

Junior Catch-and-Release Fishing excursions are offered on Sunday mornings from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. This excursion is limited to children ages 6 - 12 only - older children, younger children, and adults are not permitted on this excursion. The cost is $25 per child.

We just got back from staying at OKW for a week and DH signed DS(9) up for the kids fishing excursion there. No other kids were signed up so they let DH go along. If other kids would of been signed up he wouldn't of been allowed to go. DH only paid $10.00 though I don't know if it was because we were DVC members or not. Their excursions are Wednesdays and Saturdays.

I know DS enjoyed it though and he caught about 6 fish. He was signed up to do it again on Saturday but was to tired from being out late the night before. LOL

We do the bass fishing trip ever time we go to Disney and love it. We find it well worth the 230 bucks.

For the kids fishing excursion where do you go and meet for this? Is it at Fort Wilderness? My son would love to do this!!

Thanks,

Fryan08

dh takes a pole with him every trip. He fishes in the pond by the trading post while I take the kids to the sing a long. He always catches a few bass, nothing huge but enough to get his "fix".Be careful though, when we were there in 2006(june) he caught a 3 1/2 ft gator on a pop r. It was the most fun he had all week!!!!!

So did he get his lure back?

So did he get his lure back from the gator LOL...

believe it or not he did get the lure back. Disney had people there that took the gator away to relocate it.They said usually ones that small are left alone, but under the circumstances they took it. I used to have pictures but my computer crashed and I lost them. Caused quite a scene though:scared: .

Sounds like it would have been quite a fun thing to catch and to see being caught LOL.

My 2 DDs did the junior trip at Thanksgiving.
They loved it, you can sign them up calling the # you find on the paper they give at the entrance.
It is once a week on Saturday and it costs $10.

Thank you for the information. Do you remember what time on Saturday they did this?

Thanks again,

Frances

I too have had no luck fishing in the canals but I have had Great success fishing from the shores of the lake. Just because I love the dis and many people have helped me here ill break the true fisherman's rule of never giving away the secret spot. The location is behind the 300 loop. Right where the levee is. At times they turn a pump on (it must be to drain the canals a little after heavy rains) and it attracts the fish like crazy. Its hard to get a visual of this unless you have been back there. Look at a map of the Fort and you will see exactly where I mean. I used little black and white rubber minnows and the fish were killing them. In all honesty I maybe made 3 cast in the 3 or so hours I was there without a fish. These were largemouth bass and the average weight was roughly 4-5 pounds.

OMG...How could you tell everyone KYLE!!!!! This info should have been PM'd to me and me ONLY!!!!! LOL...man what a great lead...what time of year was this? I NEVER catch ANYTHING no matter where I fish, what time of year, or what kind of bait/lures I use...so please dont consider me a threat...But I sure as haeck am gonna try.

If I cant keep the fish I just dont see the point.

If I cant keep the fish I just dont see the point.

Just like in any other sport/hobbie people do it for the challange, entertainment, and skill!

It was in the summer time for sure I just cant remeber the exact month...Ive fished it a few times and always have had success but when that pump I was talking baout is on the fish are everywhere in the little cove area. As I said before I used these little black and white rubber minnows...I wasnt catching anything with other lures or bait but someone else fishing with me showed me what he was using and sure enough they were killing the little white and black minnows. Just cast it out and slowly troll it in. Hope this helpes!
