First Trip to HH. Any advice for a newbie?

We were there the week after Labor Day last year and they did not have the shrimp boil. We were disappointed.

What is a shrimp "boil"? I am only used to STEAMED shrimp (with Old Bay and beer). What do you boil the shrimp in? Do you eat anything with the boiled shrimp, like any cocktail sauce?

Basically the shrimp boil is shrimp put in a big pot with some seasonings and then boiled until done. Yes, they have cocktail sauce. They also have some other kind of meat for folks who don't like shrimp. Plus they have a lot of other sides to go with it. It is served at the Beach House. It was a very good meal and we were disappointed they didn't have it the week we were there.

We have taken 2 of the Dolphin Site seeing tours. Always saw plenty of Dolphins, and was able to get quite close to them.

There is a dinner boat cruise down at Harbour Town that is fun.

If you think your boys would enjoy some history, takea day trip to Savannah Georgia. Takes about 40 mins to get there. What a wonderful city. They have a trolly tour that takes about 2 hours or so that is great. I always learn something new each trip.

If they don't have the shrimp boil...do your own! We go stay at a different local island and do it with friends..a local recipe that was shared with us. Now it isn't exact, that's not the way Southerners share recipes!

Boil...New potatoes, corn on the cob in water with Old Bay seasoning....when they get half done, add Summer sausage. At the very end, add the shrimp. It's all to taste...be careful with the Old Bay, if you put in too much it gets spicy! Add some cocktail sauce and maybe a salad, and it's a great meal.

As far as how much...depends on what you like best! A standard mix is take a pot, put in water...I don't know, about 1/3 of the way up, put in 1 lb sausage, 2 lbs shrimp, 1 lb small red potatoes and several ears of corn.....at least one ear for each person in the group.

This is a meal you can make in the room and it doesn't require a lot of ingredients.

OR just eat out....Hilton Head has a LOT of restaurants!!!

dr. atkins would be proud. i think that it should be 1 lb. of sausage, 2 lbs. of shrimp, 1 lb of potatoes, plus 1 ear of corn per person.

i found some of my hilton head materials lying around today, they have several coupon books available at stores and hotels on the island, and visitor centers as well, i guess. i'll look them over and let you know of any good deals i see. legendary golf is the mini golf course that is not pirate themed. the pirate themed one is a franchise so you may have another one of those somewhere else.

WHAT HE SAID! I did edit the original post. If someone wants a more exact recipe, you can try googling Lowcountry Boil or Frogmore stew. I know there are recipes out there, I've seen them printed on aprons and all. But when I learned, it was a little of this, a little of that...the person that showed me did not have a recipe card!

there is a good outlet mall in beaufort before you cross over to the island.

i've played the robert t jones course at palmetto dunes and it was a great course, just the right difficulty and a good price.

Just wanted to mention also that the outlet mall is great, but the town you go through on the way to Hilton Head is Bluffton. You will see the outlet mall as you follow the directions to Hilton Head. Beaufort is nearby, but you have to turn after you get off of the interstate, and it takes you AWAY from Hilton Head. (Just didn't want anyone making that turn and going on an unexpected side trip because they wanted to swing by the outlet mall!)

Beaufort is a quaint, neat little Southern town, but definitely out of the way!
