I will soon give a full report from a first-timer's trip to the Poly. We made it through the hurricane and we had a fabulous time. We ended up staying 7 nights instead of 6 to make up for the one day we missed. Post any questions that you like (hope I can answer whatever you'd like to know) and I will also post a site with pictures as soon as I can. I took so many and I have to go through all of them! As much as I missed my family I wish I was still there!!!

What longhouse were you in?

How was it during the hurricane? Were you able to get food during the time you were "locked down?" I have two diaetics and worry about that.

Will you return to the Polynesian?

Hi Thatdarncat! (like that name by the way)

Welcome home - we tried the Poly for the first time this year and fell in love with it. It's our new fave. Sorry, YC/BC...you're #2 now.

Is there much damage from all of the storms? What building were you in - tell us about the view.

Can I go? I want to go. I know - I've been twice this year but darn it....

Well as far as the storm was concerned it went like this...
The night before the storm (actually the night it started to hit around 11 or so), all the parks closed at 7. We were going to eat at the World showcase but we took a nap and didn't get up in time to get there by 7. We tried to get a reservation at Ohana for dinner but that didn't work so we ate at Kona around 7:30. Kona is a WONDERFULL resturaunt! I would have to say that the food was better than Ohanas. I would also have to say that if you are eating at Ohanas for the all you can eat, think about how much you can actually eat and wonder if it's worht the price. You can get an even better meal (IMHO) for a great price at Kona. We had the Mahi Mahi and the Asian Pasta and some drinks from the bar. Afterwards we were hanging out in the lobby of Ohanas (which is really just the upstairs right in front of the big window overlooking the volcano pool) which had some live music for entertainment. Then we bought some supplies knowing that we were going to be in our room all day the next day. We bought a sandwich, some chips, dip and water and some fruit. THEY ALSO HAD BOXED LUNCHES FOR 5 DOLLARS THAT NIGHT. So that was really great for anyone needing food. They were very prepared.
The bartender I talked to said they were hoping to be open for dinner the next day so I figured we'd better get some things for lunch. So after a while we headed back to our room. Slipped underneath our door while we were out was a pamphlet about the hurricane and that we were under lockdown for the following day during the hurricane and that we were given and flashlight and free movies. We filled up one of our garbage cans (which was bigger and more convenient than the ice bucket) with ice. We put our sealed up sandwiches and things in it since we never got a refrigerator (I brought plastic bags with me on this trip which came in really handy). I'm sure if we asked for a fridge we would have gotten one but they probably ran out fast.
So for the next day we slept in for a little while. But it was hard because the winds were so scary I kept turning on the news from like 4:30 AM to about 7:30 AM watching and waiting for this thing to pass. The sliding glass doors we shaking and bending and I thought for sure they were going to bust. We took short movies with my digital camera. So around 10:30AM we ventured out into the hall and saw that some people had coffee. They had coffee on the first floor and my BF went down for some for us. We were hungry so we ate those sandwiches that were on ice.
By about 12AM (even with some scary winds still out there) the main building opened up. We saw people walking around outside and decided to see where they were going. There was no big annoucement. We had to find out for ourselves which I thought was weird. We threw on some clothes and walked over. There in the lobby upstairs and downstairs were acrobats and Micky and Minnie and Goofy and Pluto. Kids were everywhere by late afternoon and the place was hopping. Captain Cooks had a short but varied menu for anyone needing food. Kona was open and Ohanas was open later that night which we finally tried that night. (That was when I got the opinion that Kona was better food). Ohanas wasn't bad though but I really cant eat all that food. Kona just had a better tasting, more sophisticated meal to me.
Anyway to sum up the rest of that day since nobody was going ANYWHERE..adults drank, kids got autographs and watched free movies in their rooms and that's about it.
As far as damage went, the rain leaked in where the sliding glass doors were. We put down lots of towels so it wouldn't go any furthere. The wetness was almost gonw by the next night but we didn't have housekeeping that day obviously so our room was a little musty that day. There were big palm branches in the quiet pool and the volcano pool looked REALLY dirty and murky. There were branches all over the place and we saw a coulple of trees that broke in half. Nobody that I know of got hurt and there were out there cleaning as soon as the winds does down about 6:00. I'll also say quickly that when we went to the parks the next day, it looked like a hurricane never hit us! But as far as Poly is concerned, EVERYTHING was running and swimmable that night if not the next morning. It was incredible.
Nothing outside the hotel was running except other hotels. We walked over the the GF around 7 PM and saw they had some water damage. The characters they had were Pooh and Piglet and a couple others. But there were big buckets in the lobby catching rain that was falling from that high, high ceiling.

When I was planning this trip of course I cam here for advice and I also looked at the map. I wanted something centrally located and clean. Alot of people liked Tokelau. So I requested that building, 3rd floor. We also wanted garden view and a non smoking building. When we got there we were SOOOOOO impressed with the place. I can see now how come people come back year after year. My BF said it was his favorite hotel at Disney but he hadn't gone to Disney since he was 3 so his opinion was moot. But, me, having gone several times since I was little...I have to say it was my favorite too. SOOOO romantic like everyone says and very chill. Great drinks, great atmosphere, great food. And we loved the monorail for so many reasons.
Anyway, when we got to the front desk they told us we were in Tokelau 3rd floor! We were very excited because that's exactly what we wanted. When we got to the room, the first thing I thought was, "wow, was there a dog in here that was just in the pool?". I didn't like the smell at all. This of course dampened my view of the place pretty fast. This room however, facing the Quiet pool had a nice view of the castle and it was a great location. Anyway, I called to get them to freshen up the room and they brought in an ionizer thingy. (A big metal machine that is supposed to clear the air). They asked us the leave the room for 45 minutes which was fine because we needed to eat anyway so we went to Captain Cooks. When we came back the guy and the machine were gone and it still smelled. So I called them again and said "I hate to be this kind of person, but do all the rooms smell like this?" They said "OH, you STILL smell something?". I said yes and they came back with room deotorizer spray which they sprayed directly into the air conditioning vent for several seconds. So now the room smelled like room deotorizer and wet dog.
I decided to brush it off and hoped that when we got back from Epcot that day (our first park day) that all smells were gone. Well after a full day, while riding back on the monorail I decided that I didn't want to stay in that room because the back of my throat was ithching from the moldyness earlier, so we went to the front desk. I told her I thought the room was moldy and she said "NO PROBLEM, don't feel bad we'll give you another room!"
She ended up giving up Rarotonga facing the quiet pool right on the end of the building. GREAT ROOM! NO SMELL! AND I CAN NOW SEE SPACE MOUNTAIN which was pretty cool. To be honest the view of Magic Kingdom was not on our list of things we needed from our room. We probably spend about 10 full minutes out of the whole trip, out on our balcony! I mainly just wanted non smoking, non smelling and non parking lot and that's exaclty what we got out of Rarotonga. What a great building!!! I would HIGHLY recomend that building to anyone wanting a garden view. I have tons of pics that I will post today and send along a link here.
Anyway, my assesment of Poly is that it is a GREAT, WONDERFULL resort. My two complaints: the smell in the first room and also I noticed on the last few days of our stay the same sheet with a hole in it was on our bed. Did they change the sheets every day?, obviously not, because we saw that same sheet with the hole in the exact same spot on our bed those last few days. If you are going to stay there and want a garden view, ask for a building that was more recently renovated. I didn't go into other building's ROOMS (because the halls don't smell at all anywhere), but I never ventured INTO other rooms so my following opinion is just an opinion and a guess.... so it is my guess that the more recently renovated rooms don't have that musty smell. I know that Rarotonga was on that list of more recently renovated and therefore that's why I'm guessing that it didn't smell like the other room we were in at first. Also, if anyone is thinking of going next year, I would say wait untill the building you want is renovated. I know they are doing these renovations starting next year and if I were to go back, which I plan to do, I would wait for a nice new renovation of the room. But as far as we were concerned, Rarotonga was excellent and there was no smells at all. Wait untill you see these pics! You're all going to want to go back!!

Yeah, it does make me want to go back. As a matter of fact, we are going back this coming Nov. and again in May. We have stayed at the Poly twice and loved it both times. We are now DVC members and will be staying at OKW but I still think the Poly is one of the best places to stay and if possible everyone should try it once. Your pictures are great..smjj

Great photos. Thanks for sharing.

Your pictures are wonderful. I love the Polynesian; I feel like planning a trip there now!::MickeyMo

I loved your photographs. Thanks for sharing. Is the restaurant you have photographed the Kona Cafe? I read your recommendation and looked at the menus./ It does sound like something I would love.

Thanks!

Great pics! I can't wait to get there. What are the pictures of the sea-monster, whale, etc. of?

Thanks for the pics and info. I really like the night-time pics. We are going in Feb and I can't wait!!!!!!

The sea monster pics and the flag lights are from the Electric Water Parade. We caught it on the way back from the MK that night! It was alot of fun!

Oh yes and also, the one pic of the inside of Kona Cafe was the one with the reds and the cool ceiling fans. Ohanas is a darker shot and I took it without the flash so you can see how nice the mood lighting was. And if anyone has any questions as to what angle that is that you are seeing just ask. I took some from the TTC and from the dock. So untill I label them all just ask!

I really enjoyed your trip report, I'd love to try the Polynesian some time. The pictures are awesome.....thanks for sharing!!:sunny:

Great pics! Now I really can't wait to go:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc There's just one thing.... it's about that moldy mildewy smell. I have seen this mentioned on other threads. Only at the POLY. Why? Do you or does anyone else know why the rooms may be musty? I've stayed in places that had jacuzzi's and found some of them to have a musty smell and did not care for it at all. So this could pose a bit of a problem. However, the POLY does not have jacuzzi's, so what would make them smell like that?
In any case, glad you had a great time and didn't experience any major hurricane problems.:wave2:

I'm glad everyone enjoyed the pics!
Cindie-rella,
I have absolutely no idea why there was a musty smell in that room. All I can say is that I didn't go into other rooms other than the one I was relocated to by the VERYYYY nice girl at the front desk (they are, for the most part, really helpfull CM's at the Poly. I was very impressed with that). Anyway, I can only guess that maybe because of all the palms and other landscaping there may not as much light into some of the rooms and therefore doesn't air out as well. But that mustyness seemed like something that would go away once they do the renovations. The Rarotonga room we were relocated to was just fine. We faced the quiet pool and it was quiet and beautifull. There was no smell at all and it had a lovely view and a great location too! So, since I know the Rarotonga longhouse is one of the longhouses that have been more recently renovated then my guess is that when they do the rest of the longhouses one by one, the smell will probably be gone. All they need is some new carpeting and drapery probably. Overall, though, the Poly was just wonderfull. We want to go back!

I am told they have roached and rats...I just dont believe that.....how about it? I am going next month wuth grandkids....too excited....taking a little girl that has never been there too....your pics are great thanks for taking the time to do that...also I used that pic web to have calendars made up of disney and they were great and so fast only a couple days ...and nice....dont forget to get your free 15 photos in there too.....I got mine hehe

Thanks Minnie! Well i can't even look at those pics now because the man I have been dating for a year and the man I went on that with trip last week just broke up with me last night. I am devastated to say the least but I will have to erase that memory somehow and remake some good old Disney menories for myself again someday. This is going to be a tough week, month, whatever. I would say anyone interested in going to the Poly will either love it or hate it for one reason or another. No bugs there, just unchanged sheets.
