Hello Disers

I've been to the World what feels like a million times ( more like 10). But NEVER to The land, and never to Cali. We are going October 9-14. Is one day enough to do it in? What tips do you have. What is the best day? What resturaunt is do not miss? The only thing my kids want to do is Nemo, thanks to the disney channel. are the lines dying down for that? Any other tips you can spare?

For starters, I would read this thread:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1162599

And no, I don't think one day is nearly enough. While DL only has two parks, vs. WDW's four, there is a lot packed into those two parks. And make sure you see the Aladdin show (at DCA) its the best live Disney show at either WDW or DL and that alone can take 90 minutes. Its a long show (around 45 minutes but well worth it) and you have to allow time to line up beforehand. Most of the WDW regulars who have gone to DL recently have really enjoyed their time. Its not WDW in that it doesn't have that huge, resort feel but its no shabby second cousin either! DL is the original and it has a huge amount to do and see. Of course one day is better than none, but I really can't stress enough you do at least two.

I recommend very much that you stay near Disneyland, either at one of the onsite hotels (love them all but they are pricey, along the lines of a WDW deluxe) or one of the nice, clean, affordable motels on Harbor Blvd., that is walking distance to the parks. Some are as little as a two or three minute walk to the gates. It beats the hassle of L.A. traffic, parking and tramming if you stay further away.

By October the Nemo lines should be less, especially midweek. But bear in mind, that just like WDW, October is more popular than it used to be at DL. Fall breaks and just the rise in park attendance may make the line for Nemo still an hour or more during the day on a weekday, more on a weekend. Its just tough to say how Nemo will fare in the offseason since it just first opened. It doesn't have fastpass and is slow loader which is why the lines are so long. Disneyland draws way more of a local crowd than WDW and they all come on the weekends, so any weekend any time of year at Disneyland is going to be very crowded. But you need a weekend day since thats when they show the fireworks offseason at DL. They don't show them during the weeknights for the most part. And Remember is a great, not to be missed fireworks display. Starts out like Wishes then quickly branches off into something much different. Don't miss it! I also love the parade at Disneyland. So as you can see there is alot to do and even the rides that have WDW counterparts (such as Pirates) are worth doing. Very much so since some of them (Pirates and Space Mountain in particular) are much better. And DL's Fantasyland has several things (Mr. Toad, Matterhorn, Nemo, Alice in Wonderland, Pinnochio, Storybookland Canal Boats, Casey Jr. Circus Train) that WDW's Fantasyland doesn't have.

As far as meals, the Blue Bayou is a lot of fun (very similar to San Angel Inn since its riverside dining), its right inside the POTC ride. Its pricey and you need a priority seating. You can make that by calling: 714-781-3463 up to sixty days out. There are also some very fun character meals in the parks and in the onsite hotels. I like Goofy's Kitchen the best but they are all fun. So I would recommend one of those. DTD is also right there next to the parks and has some good dining and shopping options.

I would try to do a weekend day and a weekday. If you get a two or three day parkhopper, you can always spread those days out a bit. I love San Diego. But again, think if you do San Diego, you should stay down there to avoid the traffic which means a split stay. We did that in June and I was so glad we did. That way we could concentrate on San Diego and Disneyland separately since they both have so much to offer.

Good luck, have fun planning!

If you're only going for one day, a non-EE day would be best, as reported on these boards, esp if you're going to try Nemo (so Wednesday). You'll need to read up on Hydroguys tips about the best way to do Nemo to avoid the 2 hour wait.

Here's part of what he has said:

Directions to Nemo ride

There were CMs to direct us at certain points but no escorts. Here is the biggest advice about choosing a route:

Many people think "Nemo is in Tomorrowland" and take the right turn from the hub into Tomorrowland. Bad choice. Nemo is really in back of the Matterhorn and you want to continue thru the hub back to the Matterhorn at which point if you are early like us you take a right but if you are late the line will already be back to IASW and you will want to go left.

There are CMs there to try to give you this advice but with lots of people in transit you may not see them.

Once we got in line at the subs we could see some of the poor, desperate families making their way from the Autopia area where they were looking for the Nemo entrance (and could not find it) past us at the entrance and then unfortunately back to a line which by now was well over an hour long and probably 2+ hours at this point just a few minutes after 7AM. These people had taken the right at the Tomorrowland entrance and did not know exactly where they were going and paid the price.

I also forgot to add Disneyland has a Halloween event too. I think its called Halloweentime (used to be called Mickey's Halloween Treat but I think they changed it). I don't know how it compares to MNSSHP but it sounds fun. I would check out disneyland's website for information on that and see if it falls over your dates.

The other part is basically be in line for the gate at least 30 minutes early; when the gate opens (or rope drops), "walk with purpose" directly to Nemo, following the above directions.:goodvibes

Hydroguy's my hero.

to find the best info on DL anywhere. Esp. read the one for WDW veterans going to DL for the first time.;)

You've already gotten totally excellent advice, so all I will say is that if you love the MK at WDW, then you will be completely enchanted by Disneyland. DL is the original and it holds most of the magic (JMHO). You will walk where Walt walked and stand where countless celebrities of that era have stood.

Don't get me wrong, I really love WDW, but there's just something intangible about DL that cannot be translated or duplicated in the other Disney parks.

Oh my goodness. My head is spinning!!!! LOL. Thanks for all the advice. And who are they hydroguys? Are they the equivalent to Tour Guide Mike.
Thanks I will check out all the other links! I appreciate it!

Hydroguy is a disboard member who has a knack for details! He is not TGM in that he doesn't have a service you pay for but rather a member who has taken the time to write out in extreme detail how to get the most out of a Disneyland vacation. He is also originally from California so knows a lot about the area and traffic patterns. He has the fastpass thing down pat (and make sure you read that tip, since DL's fastpass has some features WDW's doesn't). His tips have literally made many people's trips successful and fun. And he is in Colorado like myself so right off the bat, that makes him an okay guy ;) ! Read the thread scootergal gave you, that has ALL of his tips, the one I gave you in my post the first one, #2 post on the thread, is only his Guide to DLR for WDW Regulars. There are several others listed in the thread Scootergal gave you. Good luck with your research, it will be well worth it as Disneyland is a very special place to visit!

Read the info that the ALSO most excellent (in addition to HydroGuy) posters provided. After you read the links you'll have lots of questions & thoughts. You should know:

- Hydroguy's threads are 1% opinion & 99% facts. You can BANK on his info.
- Minimum of two FULL days (stay at one of the DLR Hotels if you only do 2 FULL days). If you elect to go 3 days (preferable), you could stay at a DLR hotel OR one of the motels on Harbor (within walking distance).
- Post here when you narrow your lodgeing choices down. You'll get lots of great opinions.
- Know What EE is all about & know the ins & outs of FP (in HydroGuy's links) before making your final decisions.
- Your kids might only want to do Nemo, but any WDW vet / DLR newbie should pencil in:

In DL (all are not available at WDW at all or are MUCH better in DL)

- Alice
- IASW
- Mr. Toad
- Indy
- SM
- Storybookland Canal
- Pinocchio
- Pirates
- Matterhorn

In DCA

- Aladdin Show
- Griz Rapids
- Screamin
- The Bugs life area (given the ages of your kids).
- Monsters Inc. ride (given the ages of your kids).

Of course, lots more you should do....but these non DW attractions should be done at a minumum.

Have fun. :thumbsup2

And for those who read the DLR Guide to the end you will see that Amy is in the Acknowledgements because she was one of the reviewers I corresponded with before posting the Guide. :goodvibes

Ahh, I feel very famous to be mentioned in conjunction with your famous thread! As for the hyper analytical engineer thing, I am married to one, no wonder you seem strangely familar!

And you've never seen Indiana Jones, James Bond or HydroGuy in the same place (at the same time).....think about it. :cool2:
