Am I the only one that cringes when I see people post that to anybody? I know comments like "first time we ever agreed" or "look, we finally agree on something" may sometimes be well intentioned, but doesn't it seem like a backhanded compliment no matter what?

To me it reads like... the majority of time you're wrong... but look, you got it right for once.

I've only read what the OP of this thread posted and decided to post this before I read any more. I agree it's a backhanded compliment. I only notice a few posters who ever use this though and they seem to always disagree anyways so I think they both know it's backhanded.

If we're talking about the same few, they are the ones who call others nasty yet there they are making an obvious backhanded compliment.

I think it depends on the person saying it and the context in which it's said.

I think I know the difference when someone is trying to find common ground and maybe mend bridges etc. and when someone is being sarcastic.

I seldom use the phrase, but when I do, I use it because I'm shocked or amused. I don't use it as an insult or compliment.

I get those, and I've said things like that too, because of the kind of threads I post on - agreeing with Poster A might be a sign the universe is out of alignment, which must be noted. (Poster A often agrees.)
