We are going to be staying at Wyndham Bonnet Creek and will have a rental car. We plan to go to Coco Beach for a day. Will I hit any tolls ? We are tenting from Budget and I am considering getting a Sunpass. Any suggestions?

You will hit tolls on the Beachline to the east coast. Just pay cash at the toll booths. No sense getting a SunPass for one trip.

She will also hit tolls getting to WDW from the airport, assuming, of course, she is renting from the airport.

I agree. No need for a Sunpass. All tolls on the Beachline (SR 528) are payable in cash. Just stay to the far right when you see a tollbooth.

We are renting from the airport and I hope to go back next May and October. Does that make a difference?

I agree with the others - no need for Sunpass or Budget's expensive toll option. Its easy to stop at the tolls and pay cash.

I thought some of the tolls were going to go unmanned at some point and that the rental car companies were gonna require you to have one.????

This was last year or so. Wonder if things changed?

Hasn't happened yet in the Orlando area.

With the exception of one exit ramp on the FL Turnpike all tolls in the Orlando area are either manned or have an exact change option.
The exit ramp that is Sunpass only goes from the Turnpike South to the 528 (Beachline) West.

I am parting from the "crowd" here. Since you are planning future trips, I would go with the Sunpass. You also get reduced tolls on their roads using this pass. https://www.sunpass.com/tollSavings

I agree, we go at least 2x a year for several weeks and we got the Sunpass 3 years ago...best thing we've done. If you go every year, and go through toll booths on those trips, it's worth it.

Plus, we always do quite a bit of running around 'offsite' and ran into cash only (exact change, not manned) booths a few times (before we got Sunpass), needless to say we didn't have the exact change and ran the booths, causing a great deal of stress. Now we don't have to worry.:goodvibes

Hi Folks:

If you go multiple times per year and get the transponder how do you register the vehicle with it? The website says you can use it on multiple cars, but they must be listed with your subscription.

Thanks

If you get the portable transponder, you will have to register it to your name and add funds to it. You can do that all online. Will you have access to a computer when in Orlando? You can also call to do all of this during business hours. It may mean you have to pay some cash tolls before you can register it. Once you have the transponder, you don't have to register each car. Though it is recommended to do so in the event of a misread. If the car is registered you don't need to worry about any surprise charges from the car rental company.

dioxide - Thank you for that information.

Can I register the vehicle after I get to the resort? Do I have to un-register it at the end of the trip?

Thanks.

Nothing like that has happened in Central FL as yet. And, the rental companies will NOT require you to have anything, it will remain an option. However, if you go through a toll without a sunpass or epass the rental car company will charge you.
There is quite a bit of information about this on sunpass.com

Yes you can register the vehicle after you get to the resort and you can use the transponder also. No, you do not have to unregister at the end of the trip, but, it really only takes a minute to do so.

Sunpass has a nice mobile website and you can register your car in the parking garage, with a smartphone. There is a rental car check box you can check on in the add a vehicle section and you can enter when you are due to return the car and the link between your transponder and the rental vehicle will be terminated at that time. Very convenient.

Yes, you can register after you get to the resort. When you add the vehicle to use transponder it will be registered as a rental and will also have beginning and ending date, so no you do not have to un-register.
You can aslo set up to how to add dollars. I add dollars once mine drops to 10.00. One thing, the dollars never expire so they'll be good for you next trip.
I think it's worth getting the transponder. ($25.00) I used to take a bunch of change, now I don't, and you don't have to stop to pay. I don't like getting in the pay line and the person in front of me takes forever wanting receipt, change, directions or they only have one lane open and your in line for 10 min.
You can order by mail and have it shipped to you. They did not charge me and I had it activated and ready to go once I arrived. No problem going through security either and it's in my purse. Last time I forgot to register rental car and had no problem. I only used it though to go to airport & back on that trip.

Also, if your rental car has sunpass option, your transponder overrides it so you are not charged by the rental company.

Thanks for those replies. You have convinced me. I will order the transponder.:thumbsup2
