First time Disney trip - Birthday meal?

My friends are going to Disney for the first time with their son who will turn 5 during the trip. They tried to get ressies for Chef Mickey's and for Ohana but no luck for the day of the birthday. Should they keep trying and look for a cancellation or do you have a better suggestion?

It's expensive, but Hoop Dee Doo Revue and make sure they know it is his birthday. Get Cat 1 seating as well, if you can. It is a great show, a lot of fun, and the cast members will interact with you, especially when you are celebrating something.

If he likes dinosaurs T Rex restaurant in DD is fun and the food is good.
