Uh...it's not that simple.
As I already mentioned, the increased debt under Reagan was caused in large part by defense spending due to the cold war. And wasn't significantly decreased until the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 90's, through most of Bush 1. And considering the Cold War ended with out a single shot fired, it's argueably the best money we've ever spent.
Just an FYI:
There was cold war between the USSR and the USA that took place from 1945-mid 1960's. Not a single shot was fired.
What about the Cuban Missle Crisis that took place in 1962?
That too was resovled diplomatically without a single shot fired.
Let us not forget the Vietnam War that we participated in from 1961 until
1975. Sadly many shots were fired and lives lost during that war.
However the spending skyrocketed under President Regan, President George Bush and President George W Bush!
