Orlando's WFTV news is reporting Florida's first confirmed case of swine flu.

"A case was diagnosed here in Orlando today on a tourist from Mexico who came to Disney attractions two days ago to visit," chief medical officer for Adventist Health System, Loran Hauck said.

It has not been confirmed as swine flu. Samples have been sent to a lab for testing. Results will take at least 48 hours.

Nooooooooooooo! I am a 100% sure that Disney already has a contigency plan to ensure guest safety. Let's wait and see. I'm leaving on Thursday, I'm hoping to hear some news by then. This trip is over a 100 points and I do not want to see those points in holding. We might still go and not visit the parks :guilty:

You've got to love the media. They love to get everyone excited with unconfirmed news. It is sad how things are reported today or not reported for that matter as well.

But what do you expect of Disney? I don't think there is anything that can be done other than individuals taking thier own precautions and washing thier hands, using tissue when coughing or sneezing.

DS12 got really sick two days after we got back from spring break at Disney. High Fever (103), sore throat, cough, congestion headache, fatigue, vomiting, diarreah - it lasted about 4-5 days.

Had his illness happened two weeks later, I'd have been convinced it was swine flu! As it was, they tested him for strep (negative) but nobody was thinking to check for influenza (plus we'd all been vaccinated).

There are always flus and viruses and strep throat floating around WDW. Remember the stomach bug from December - and there was an equally bad one the Thanksgiving prior.

I posted this on the "flu" thread, and I think it bears repeating here. We leave Tuesday for a week at the "World".

My plan is not to panic. There are what, 48 known cases in the US? How many millions of people live here now? The snowball's chance in the proverbial "heck" is about any normally healthy person's chance of catching this. Just following normal handwashing and common sense practices is about all I will do. I must admit the plane ride bothers me with any kind of illness issues, but I also have to get there, so I'll take the chance.

I also think anyone who is smart enough to look for the symptoms is also smart enough to get to a hospital or doctor and get the Tamiflu meds (which is supposed to be quite effective for this strain).

You can't expect WDW to be immune from any type of bug with that many people. If you live afraid of catching something, you probably should avoid WDW at all times. I agree, just make sure you wash your hands and use common sense. I work at a large university and it won't surprise me if "swine flu" shows up here, but I can't stay home from work everyday.

Wife just completed chemo therapy treatments 3 weeks ago.
We'll be in SSR on Monday. Asked the docs wether we should forget about it.
Here are his comments.

Start taking Airborne, both of you.
Bring along a thermometer to check on a regular basis.
Take along a prescription for Zithromax just in case. Maybe Tamaflu will do as well.
Wear a mask on the plane if your comfotable with doing so.

Disney can't control any of this and I believe we are all to think responsibly and act like concerned human beings. If you have to sneeze of cough -please COVER UP.
Wash frequently -and long. Most bacteria will be killed with a thorough 15 second minimum soap and warm water hand wash. It got me through 7 months of treatment when all around me had colds and flu. Not even a sniffle.
The key is to be aware and be considerate of others.
Don't be stupid regarding your own health.
And for goodness sake, be aware that you are not the only person around. Have consideration for others by not sharing your germs.

That being said, I plan on having a great relaxing time at the World. And spending some well deserved quality time with the woman I love more than life.

Good for you decarop enjoy that trip to WDW ::yes::

While the media performs a necessary service keeping us informed I do find that they place too much emphasis on worst case scenarios.

May you both have a wonderful trip & sending positive thoughts & best wishes out to your DW :flower3:

I've been reading all the posts concerning the Swine Flu in Orlando and it has me a little concerned as well. We're planning to be at FW from Sunday to Wednesday and it wouldn't bother me as much, but I have a two year old and I'm 9 weeks pregnant. My husband doesn't think much of it and I hate to miss out (even though we visit at least once a month); I just don't want to take something like this lightly, in my circumstance. Anyone have any advice?? We thought about hanging by the pool, but the well being of my children is my main concern. I'm planning to make a call to my doctor tomorrow, but wanted others input until then! Thanks again!!

Just the same advice given above repeated yet again.

Also, being pregnant, your immune system is probably in GREAT shape protecting both you and the baby.

You are probably no more likely to get sick from swine flu at Disney as you are at home, but talk to your OB/GYN and get their advice to ease your mind.

Influenza is actually one of the more dangerous illnesses during pregnancy because so many flu and anti-viral medications are not safe to take while pregnant. I got old-fashioned influenza while pregnant with my son and I would not wish that on anyone. There was nothing I could do but take Tylenol and use a vaporizer. I was sick as a dog for weeks - definately much sicker than I would have been had I not been pregnant.

I would stay home until this passes. Especially since you get to go every month. My daughter just gave birth. She has Migraines, there was hardly anything she could take for them. I would sure call my Dr. You are in a different circumstance. I see you have children, but the Doctor's have really cut the medicine out.

We're headed there on Friday. I am not that impressed or bothered by this swine flu. I figure I have a pretty good chance of getting sick just about wherever I go. I think it's just a risk that's out there. I could also get killed walking across the street, and I don't worry about that either. The only precaution I might take is to go to a doctor if I get flu like symptoms, when I normally would just let it run its course.

I'm going to open up shop in the TTC parking lot selling MOPP suits. I'll put some Mickey Stickers on them.

I've posted several times on the other thread. But my feeling, based on my interpretation of what CDC has published. I'm more likely to get hit by a car than even come in contract this.
