We are going on our first overseas trip from Brisbane to Disneyland/USA 2 adults & 3 children aged 8,7,2.

Do you have any NEED to know tips?
There is just so many on the boards so I thought this would help me narrow them down. :)

Minimi, Congratulations on your upcoming trip!! You are going to LOVE Disney and the USA :)

My tip would be to get yourself a good guidebook or two and start your research/planning there! For our first trip I bought the Unofficial guide to Disneyland - it's a very comprehensive book that covers pretty much everything !

Second tip - Rope Drop! Unless you are travelling at a quiet time you can get so much done in the first couple of hours in each park. Queues are sooo much shorter at that time.

Third tip - Ask for help! The boards are full of people who have been there, done that and can answer any specific question you have.

Fourth tip - if you are travelling beyond Anaheim then there are people here that can help you with questions you may have about pretty much anywhere in the USA. Ask away :)

Minime - Research!!! Look all over the Disboard. Many different ideas floating around.

Get there early and try and watch the rope drop. They make a big deal out of it. Pick a seat for the parade and get there early. Some people say half an hour, but I have found getting there about an hour early gets you good seats.

Stop an enjoy the atmosphere. The atmosphere might be around you, but take the time to stop and enjoy it.

When looking for a place to stay, be careful when they say only a block away. There blocks aren't like ours. They are huge! I think most hotels that are "a block" away offer some sort of shuttle.

Welcome to the Dis!

Have fun....research will only take you so far....the rest is up to you. Remember, it is YOUR family vacay.

Disneyland is great and a lot of it depends on the crowd levels. Going early will help.

With kids that age, if you haven't already done so, it might be worth considering a character meal.

Where else in the US are you going to?

Thanks for all the tips! everything will help me at this stage lol I'm lost so much to take in.

PrincessInOz we are going for around 20 days at this stage and will be doing Anaheim, San diego, San Fran, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon & New York. I still have to work out how many days where etc.

as a tip for disneyland -- go to their website, familiarise yourself with the layout of places from the downloadable maps - when we arrived off a 14 hour flight, we had no idea where stuff was and kinda wandered around aimlessly.

also, make sure when you enter main street, go to the town hall just off the main square and get a 'first visit' button. wear these and everyone will know it's your first visit and CMs will be super-extra helpful and tell you all kinds of interesting things - it's also a free souvenir from your first disneyland visit and helps start your vacation with a nice piece of magic :)

make sure you check out mousesavers.com for a list of rides/attractions/shops which may be closed or down for maintenance when you go - pirates of the caribbean was down when we went but since we knew about it in advance, there was no let down with expectations.

also, i would recommend that if you think you might want to pin trade, research it and perhaps buy some pins before you go. the pins in the parks are sold individually and in sets and are quite $$$, so if you're looking to do the trading, buying a bulk lot of 20 or 50 online may actually save money for you :)

i am also in brisbane, so would be happy to answer any other questions you have :)

My tips would be:

Don't underestimate how many days you need to see the parks - try not to pack it all in in 1 or 2 days, allow yourselves at least 4, and more would be better (especially with kids).

Learn about Fastpass and use them to your advantage.

Have a plan - maybe not a complete touring plan, but a definite idea of what attractions you most want to see/do, where they are in the parks, and what the best sequence would be, and make good use of Magic Mornings if you have them.

Allow some down time, otherwise you'll be exhausted!

Look at the options for meals - our first trip we just ate whereever we happened to be near at the time, and so we missed out on some of the really good food and places. Do a bit of research and narrow down your favourites before you go.

Don't miss out on stuff like the fireworks, Fantasmic, Aladdin etc, our first trip we missed all 3 due to my bad planning, I saw the fireworks and Fantasmic my 2nd trip, and am determined to see Aladdin on my 3rd.

Ask lots of questions on here, we all have an embarrassingly large amount of Disneyland/WDW knowledge.

Congrats on your first trip! That's such a wonderful age to be taking your kids :D

For tips: this might sound a little odd, but I'd recommend going to Youtube and watching videos of people walking around the parks and going to attractions. Maps are helpful, and we always revise before we go, but once you're in the parks, it's far easier to lose your bearings!!

Like Aust above me said, never underestimate time needed for Disneyland! People really feel you only need a day or two, as it's much smaller than Walt Disney World, but that's not the case! We spent 8 days end of 2010 and didn't manage to fit everything in! I'd say definitely 4 or 5 for a first trip would be a good amount of time! If you can only spare 1-3 days, make sure to plan which rides are 'must-dos' before you go!

Make sure to check which rides will be suited for your kids. If any of them are thrill seekers, make sure you use Fastpasses. Fastpasses are available at certain popular rides. All you do is insert your park ticket into a machine, and it'll allocate you a time frame for you to return to the attraction to ride with almost no wait!

For example, if you were to visit Space Mountain at 10am and the wait was 60 minutes, you could grab a Fastpass, which might say to return between 3pm - 4pm, where your wait may only be 5 minutes!
The official Disneyland site helps explain as well, if you visit the 'Guest Services' page.

Fastpasses are also great if you have limited time to visit the parks. You can ride the attractions with smaller lines, while waiting for your fastpass return time!

A tip I'd recommend would be to get a 1st Time Visit badge! You can get them from City Hall, which is to the left as you head under the Disneyland Station entrance. You don't really get anything from them, but CM's will notice and be able to offer additional help, and may sometimes give you tips or let you in on secrets if they know it's your first visit!

Check out 'allears.net' and click on 'Disneyland' at the top. Then go into 'Dining' on the left side navigation bar and then 'Disneyland Menus' from there. Take a look at the menus before you go, and make note of any foods you want to try and what fits with your budget. Most of the menus include the prices of the food, and it's updated regularly.

Make sure to sort out which nights you want to see the Night Shows (if you want to see them!) World of Color began in 2010, and offers a fast pass system for the show. It's an absolute must do for our family!
Make sure to get to Disney California Adventure park at 9am on the morning of the day you want to see it. Head straight to Grizzly River Run ride, where you can use the Fastpass machines to get your viewing tickets. It's a first come first serve basis, so to get the best view of the show, get the fastpasses early!
Disney gives some info on it too, under the Disney California Adventure page. If you click on 'World of Color' and visit it's 'Experience' page, it'll give details for fastpasses and recommendations.

Aladdin - A Musical Spectacular is a must see too! It's a 40 or so minute musical show, which in our opinion, is the quality you pay for when seeing a broadway show! It doesn't require fastpasses, but you do have to get in line. There are several shows throughout the day.

For your little one, I'd recommend to make note of all the bathroom locations on the maps. Also take a look at which parades you think she may be interested and plan them into your day.
For food for the kids, if they're picky eaters, consider getting groceries outside the resort and taking snacks into the parks. If you're able to get to a grocery store, I'd stock up on bulk-buy water bottles, because the park has them way overpriced!!

Have an AMAZING and magical time!!!!
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or want any further advice :)
We've been visiting since I was around the age of your kids, and have family friends over there, so I consider SoCal a home to me :)

we also took our water bottles and just refilled them at the filtered water stations around the parks if you're big water drinkers.

also, grab a couple of copies of the park maps for souvenirs... ours got destroyed everyday from rain, being folded in pockets etc. we grabbed extras so we could keep them as 'pretty' souvenirs and they're a great (and really inexpensive, as they're free) way to remember the trip

a really lovely souvenir that doesn't cost a ton of money is the painted name artwork (can be purchased near eidelweiss snacks or in downtown disney) and the silhouette pictures from a store on main street usa. also, they sell really cute foam mickey head keychains for only like .75c and buttons for like 4 for $1.00 at the registers at most stores :) i became a bit of a button freak.

also, pressed pennies are a great souvenir - each penny will cost you 2 x quarters and 1 x penny to press. they all have different motifs as little reminders of the trip. my sister bought a passport for hers, but we plan to mount & frame ours. as we hated dealing with change in the parks, we just put it all into a small ziploc bag and then pulled it out every time we came up to a pressed penny machine :)

also, if you don't like carrying a lot of cash on you, you can consider purchasing disney gift cards which can be used in parks for pretty much most things such as food, souvenirs, clothing, merchandise etc.

i would also recommend investing in a really good pair of comfortable walking shoes... being from bris, us girls went in t-shirts, jeans and thongs/sandals... by the end of the day, our achilles were aching and the rest of the time we were in comfy sneakers/sandshoes with a bit more padding :)

i would also recommend that if you think you'll do a lot of shopping, buying of souvenirs/merchandise etc that you only pack 1/2 of what you think you'll need and take a spare duffel or something that can double as extra luggage.

our trip... we packed 1/2 of our original clothes, then still ended up taking 3 x times too many clothes :) wasted space we could have filled for souvenirs.

I would have a look at your must sees, because you have quite a large number of cities to visit in 20 days and you have to factor in losing a day each time you travel to and from a city. Particularly if travelling east to west coast. You really don't see anything in 1 or 2 days, and personally we rarely stay anywhere less that 3 nights if we can help it.

Especially with kids as young as yours, too many internal flights and changes of hotels become pretty stressful. I would probably look at removing Vegas and Grand Canyon, even though I am a huge vegas fan. Of course depends on where you are flying into and out of etc etc.

We have done pretty much the same trip a few times, happy to help anyway you need.

The others having given you great disney advice.

For travelling with kids: we didn't actually do rope drop - we let the kids set the pace, and made big use of the iphone apps that let you know where the short queues are! Also used fastpass etc. Letting the kids set the pace meant we went two weeks without any meltdowns. Our longest day was 9.00am - 12.40am and it was not a problem! :D (Most days weren't that long - but the evening we had priority seating for a light show and then extra magic hours for the park, we just watched the kids to see when they'd had enough [it was US that had had enough by 12.40am lol!] and then let them get the sleep they needed the next morning).

You can grab free (large!) cups of water everywhere - so we never carried water.

iphone apps... I need to look mine up! But priceless. Find the shortest ride lines, the closest toilets, and the closest eating places (with menus). I found the travelgear T-mobile sims priceless too!

Wear your first visit badges! (Ask for them somewhere if you aren't staying on property.) They got us all sorts of little treats... free cupcakes and the like, when we were getting our free water! :D

Have fun, have fun, have fun! :D :D

So the T-mobile sim gave you data as well?

Personally I'll only drink bottled water over there - tap/filtered water is just another thing that can set off my stomach - not because there's anything bad in it, simply because it's different to what I'm used to.

So the T-mobile sim gave you data as well?

The one I got did, yes. :) (All the options are explained on the travelgear website, or you could check out t-mobile itself, though you need to be there to buy from them.)

Subbing as I'm getting some great information from this thread for the trip in September! I never knew about the First Visit buttons, thank you so much.
