First job or car?

My first technical job was a babysitting job, but my first job that I count is the one that I have. I work part-time at a bulk food store. I used to be a cashier, now I'm a supervisor/career.
I got the job when I went in, asked for the manager and I asked her if they were hiring. We had a chat, and I basically knew I had the job before she ever called my references.

I don't have a car, and I probably won't own one until I'm out of university. I cannot afford, or afford to save up for one right now.

Unless you count babysitting? I tried applying the other day, but noone is hiring and I missed the whole thing where they hire for seasonals!

I haven't gotten my first car either, but I did get my license YESTEDAY!
So, I'll probably be using my dad's nissan sentra- love that car!

My first job is my current job which is at Fitworks Fitness Center. I love my job. I work in playland, front desk or training. I don't work much but I'm fine with it since I do have a free membership there.

My first car is my 2003 Oldsmobile Alero. It's silver and in great shape. I will be keeping that car through college.

First Job: Chick-fil-a. I went to every store in the mall actually and filled out applications. When I was returning them, Chick-fil-a scheduled an interview for that day and I was hired on the spot. They were a little desperate, and this was back in 07'. I worked there for 2 years. It was about 15 minutes from my house, but I live in the city so there were many other opportunities closer as well.

First Car: 2007 Toyota corolla. I didn't really ask for a car, I mean I jokingly did knowing we couldn't really afford one right when I turned 16. When I got a job, around that same time my mom had finished paying off her van and wanted to help me. So I gave her a certain percentage of my paychecks, and they bought me an almost new car, it only had 5000 miles and was used as a rental before me, that would last me for 10 years. I am extremely grateful for this.

Did any of you apply when there wasn't a "Now Hiring" sign up? Did you get the job?

I'm a little late on this boat, I know, but I haven't had my first job. If I want to get a car by next school year, and more importantly, go to college, I have to get a job this spring/summer. There's not many places with a "now hiring" sign up, and we live in the boondocks - barely anyone hires under 18 and we have very little around here.

Sometimes there isn't a sign. I basically just asked if they were hiring. I fortunately was applying during a time of great need, where as now not so much. I would strongly suggest trying to get a job now during the holidays, because there will be almost no jobs until march/april if you don't.

Are there any family friends that can give you a recommendation to someone they know. I know a lot of my friends got jobs even though they were not 18 yet because they knew somebody. Keep trying and don't get discouraged. I have been in college for 3 months now and still have not found a job over there. Even transferring to another chick-fil-a was impossible. The job market sucks now, especially for people looking for a first job.

Yeah I have to get my working papers first. I forgot to do it on Tuesday so I have to go to guidance after we get back from break.

Not really. I've talked with my dad about working in his office for a few days during the summer. Pretty much just clerical work - stamping, organizing, mailing, etc. I've known the ladies in the office since I was born, and my dad is the manager who hires people so that's a plus. I don't know how it'll work though.

Oh, and as for the places I've looked at are ShopRite, 2 RiteAid locations, and the TJ Maxx about 15-20 minutes away hires 16+. The area I live in is pretty sketchy so fast food places kinda freak me out. Pizza Hut is hiring for servers but it's in a very bad location so that's pretty much out. (I live in the "rough" area)

One of my best friends in high school worked at his dad's printing shop. I mean anything is a place to get started you know? If you could find a steady babysitting job, like after school/weekends, even that would look good on resumes.

I don't think there was one for me.
Whether or not you get hired then isn't really important. Give them your resume, and make an impression. They do keep resumes on file. My manager rarely calls somebody months later, but if all of the sudden the franchisee decides we need another body, my manager is likely to call the last person who came in to see her about a position.

I live in the UK so most people dont get their license til their nearer 18 - I have 5 months til my 18th and I havent even started lessons yet...I'll prob wait til after college, so still have to get a first car
