First grader suspended for

The school did not label it sexual harrassment, that is what the mother is saying.

Am I understanding that a 6 year old hip hop class is dancing to a song named "I'm sexy and I know it?"
As my Generation Xer dh likes to point out, this upcoming generation should be labeled "generation trash". I'm not a prude, but there is no reason a 6 year old needs to be advertising that they are "sexy" or advertising that they have passion in their pants (a line from the song)

That says a heck of a lot more about you that about the next "generation"...

you are going to judge an entire generation like that... it would be funny if it was not so sad...

No what is sad that our generation of parents thinks 6 year olds performing to songs like "I'm sexy and I know it" is cute and accept it. What is sad is that we allow that trash, hence the label. Hey what do you want from a bunch of Gen X slackers. We have failed our kids ;)

I suggest seeing the movie Idiocracy to get a glimpse of our future generations. Its labeled a comedy, but the sad fact is that we are clearly on our way there.

actually that line has been edited out for their dance.. I have no problem with it at age 6. I would rather see a class of 6yo boys using that song vs 15yo girls

I think its trashy for any kid to be performing a routine to it, whether or not the lyrics have been edited out or not.

I have seen Idiocracy... and my kids are not "generation trash" ... maybe yours are...

Like it or not, your kids are a part of it, and so are mine. As long as parents (not all, so unless you are one of them, no need to get defensive) are raising 6 year olds to perform I'm Sexy and I Know It at their dance recitals, there is no escaping it. These kids are growing up in a time when trashiness is labeled cute and accepted. Its pretty disgusting if you ask me.

I know that i have had this same conversation on the dis before.. sigh...

and dancing to one song does not make a child "trash" or a parent bad...

If you want to label people or even a generation because of one incident ..go right ahead..

I personally would take a generation dancing to "i am sexy and i know it" over whites only fountains and segregated schools...

I guess i have a way of judging character..

I think it's inappropriate for any kids to do a dance routine to. I don't have my kids in dance though because I think a lot of it is inappropriate.

Generation Me is a good book regarding the Gen Xers and the future generations as well.

Oh geez, are you really bringing up segregation? I'm not sure what that has to do with any of this.
And FTR, I never labeled any child "trash", I was speaking in terms of what they are doing, what they are exposed to, what we have accepted as far as their behavior. Just wanted to clear that up since you obviously read something into my posts that wasn't there.

So in conclusion, iIf you can't see the big picture of where we are headed when it has become perfectly fine that 6 year old kids are performing trash like this at recitals, then we clearly see things differently.

Labeling a generation is labeling the individual also...

my point is that I do not see this music as a sign of a downfall in society.. and yes I feel that a society that condoned segregation was much worse than a society where kids listen to a "sexy" song... or dance to an edited version of said song...

Okay, you are using past generations to judge how bad the current one is, or will be. I prefer to use what the current generation is doing, to judge just how bad it is. (or how good, but in this particular thread, its about the negative)
And its much more than music, there is a big picture that you clearly don't see.

Wow... totally wrong... I am using past generations to judge how GOOD the current one is or hopefully will be!! LOL

You are the one being negative..LOL The big picture i see is that even with "sexy" music my kids and their friends are positive, loving and have wonderful plans for the future!!

You clearly can't see that big picture... you are the one labeling a future generation as "trash" not me...

I totally agree with the bolded part above. I don't think there is anything cute about trivializing sexuality to 6 year olds or 9 year olds, or 15 year olds. Once up on a time we protected our kids from things they were too young to understand. We relished their innocence. Now days we clap to them shaking their butts to songs about sex. It says something very sad about our society.

And I've seen several people comment that their kids don't understand what it means anyway. But with today's readily available technology its only a short keystroke away on google.

Extremely well said and I totally agree with you (and luvmy3).

Once upon a time kids went to work in sweat shops , coal mines and farms to support their families... I am not for sexualizing children but lets not pretend that the past was all roses and now we are awful.. because that is just not true...
