A Colorado elementary school student was suspended from school this week for singing a lyric from a popular LMFAO song, "I'm sexy and I know it."
Those six little words from the Los Angeles rap-influenced duo earned first-grader D'Avonte Meadows a three day dismissal from Sable Elementary in Aurora, Colo.
"I only just said the song," Meadows told Denver's ABC7 News. "I'm sexy and I know it."
School officials said D'Avonte was suspended for sexual harassment after he sang and the line to a female classmate who was standing in a lunch line. Unfortunately, it wasn't the first time he'd serenaded this girl with this particular lyric.
Aurora School District's Media Relations Specialist Paula Hans, said in a statement:
"Aurora Public Schools is committed to providing equitable learning for all students. We have policies and protocol in place to prevent any disruption to the learning environment. Due to privacy laws, we are unable to discuss appropriate disciplinary consequences about a specific student."
District policy, as outlined in the student handbook, states that sexual harassment "must have negative effects on the learning or work of others."
D'Avonte's mother, Stephanie Meadows, told ABC7 News that her son had had disciplinary problems before this week's infraction. Last month, she said, he was sent to the principal's office for singing the same song to the same girl.
This time, however, he was "shaking his booty" near the girl's face, Meadows told ABC7 News.
"I'm going to definitely have to sit with him and see if he understands exactly what the song means," Meadows told ABC7 News.
But Meadows still doesn't believe her son's recent actions justify suspension for sexual harassment.
"I could understand if he was fondling her, looking up her skirt, trying to look in her shirt. That, to me, is sexual harassment," Meadows told ABC7 News. "I'm just, I'm floored. They're going to look at him like he's a pervert. And it's like, that's not fair to him

First of all, I can't believe a parent would let their 6 year old child listen to that kind of music and secondly - once again - I'm so glad I homeschool.

Hey mom, instead of making sure he understands what the song means, maybe you could just tell him to STOP singing it at school. :confused3 It might have been overkill to suspend him the first time he sang it, but he had already been disciplined for doing the same thing before. Good for the school, for taking a strong stance against inappropriate behavior!

I wouldn't be surprised if he heard the song from the M&M's commercial, so don't be too quick to blame his parents for intentionally letting him listen to that song.

I don't have a problem with him being suspended since he was already disciplined for it previously. I don't think he should be branded with a scarlet SH on him, but if shaking your booty in front of someone's face falls under that according to the school, that's life Mom.

I think it crazy, this little boy was suspended for singing this. If he's like my little boy who in 1st grade he know the saying from the MM commerical and has no idea what it means, beside he think the MM's are funny

Kind of hard NOT to have your kids hear that song, unless you keep them some where with no TV or radio..since it was everywhere :sad2:

If you listen to any kind of radio in the car your kids have probably heard it.

I've never heard the song or seen the commercial. We only have Netflix and AppleTV and we listen to our iPods/iPhones in the car instead of the radio, so...yeah.

Since he had already been to the principal's for singing it before, one can assume he knew it was wrong, whether or not he knew what it meant. The fact that this time he added a booty in the face to the girl he was singing it to, makes it even worse. Obviously the visit to the Prinicpal's office didn't help him learn, maybe the suspension will.

He's in first grade, if you suspended every child who has to have repeat trips to the prinicpal's office you are going to have a lot of missing children.

Or you have alot of well behaved children. :thumbsup2

They were in the lunch line and he shook his rear in her face, what is he 6 feet tall? :confused3

you haven't dealt with many 1st grader I take it

I have 3 kids, and apparently I hold mine to a higher standard then you hold yours. They didn't get a pass on bad behavior because they are 6. I expect my kids to behave, and if they visit the Principal for any reason, they better not be visiting again for the same thing. If they do, then suspension will probably be the easy punishment they get.

I work in a school district in Colorado so you can imagine this was a huge topic of conversation this past week.

At first, everybody was appalled that this little boy was suspended for singing a song. But then, more facts came out.

This boy has been disciplined before. He was also disciplined for singing this song to this particular girl.

He continued to harass the little girl, singing in her face, upping the ante by shaking his "booty" in her face.

The suspension apparently wasn't completely sexual harassment like the mom is making a fuss about and the media is sensationalizing. But apparently continued harassment of this little girl after he had been already been disciplined for it was also form of bullying.

I currently parent and educate my 6 year old and her punishments for repeat offenses (the latest we dealt with was lying) are swift and severe and it works!

Her punishment for lying was to lose a privilege that she holds very dear and she was warned that if there was a second offense, she'd lose it for twice as long. The second offense happened, we followed through on the consequence and that was the end of that. And just this morning she said to me, "Aren't you glad I don't lie anymore? I didn't like losing my iPod so that's why I won't lie again!"
