First Disney World Trip

With the options you presented, I'd do PO:FQ, and then learn about PO:R, as they are actually "one" resort kind of split in two. You can use POR pool if you prefer it, or just want to switch it up, both food courts are well within walking range, and Boatwright's is their shared TS restaurant. Of course there's also the boats to DS. During certain times of year it can be hard to snag a complete stay at FQ, so I'd go ahead and book and then try for the discounts as they come out. We never book a package as there are several downsides to the way we do things, and you don't really save any money. We book a room separate, and get tickets separate, mostly using Undercover Tourist if we know what we want.
Yes, I’m staring to learn through more seasoned veterans that booking everything together doesn’t seem like it saves much money at all. Like I said, Disneyland regulars and this is all new to us. A lot more stressful thinking we have to book fast passes so far out and not just haveing an even playing field the day we get to the park. We like French Quarter location and theming but the rooms themselves seem kind of bland and dated.

That’s awesome. We love Disneyland so much and we are expecting to love Disney World just as much. We aren’t going to be comparing them in any way and Disneyland Park will always be our top although we are a bit biased. We got engaged in Disneyland in October. I was able to pull of surprising her with dinner at Club 33 and proposed to her on the balcony above New Orleans square.
But I think the parks we are most interested in are Animal Kingdom and Epcot because how different they are from everything out here. I have been looking at renting DVC at either Kidani Villge or Boulder Ridge, because there’s no more availability at Copper Creek. Just looking at videos Wilderness Lodge seems the most appealing to us from amenities to the themeing. And it’s not too much more for a studio than booking regular rooms at POFQ. We need to make up our mind soon before all the studios are booked.

Congratulations on the DL engagement. We got engaged at our paving stone in front of the park (but Club 33 would have been way cooler...) It is great to see all of the WDW parks but I'd agree that Epcot and AK will be your highlights.
Comparing WL and AKL they are both great resorts designed by the same architect (just like the Grand Californian as well). We love to visit AKL but prefer to stay at WL because of the better transportation options. It is only a 5 minute bus ride to MKL from WL, which is still way quicker than the bus from AKL to AK. Then all of the other bus times tend to be a little longer at AKL as well, but you do have the benefit of seeing the animals. Another difference is Kidani is about a 10 minute walk from the main AKL building, and while you can take the bus between them it adds to the remote feel. WL is definitely more compact, and we really like its beautiful location on Bay Lake. Either resort is great though, and would be a definite upgrade over a Moderate.
Good luck taking the plunge and making the WDW planning commitment. It is very odd to be booking a room at 11 months and restaurants at 6 months, but it makes sure that you get the ones you really want. We did our honeymoon with only one ADR, and we had a great time and got in for some nice meals by waiting or eating in the bar, but we'd recommend having a few more ADRs to make it easier.

I was in your situation only reversed two years ago. We are WDW vets but never had gone to DL, so I get the nerves. It's funny because I know I over planned for DL but had fun doing it, and really enjoyed the trip. You'll be ok, it does take just a bit more planning, but a different type as well. Having to know so far ahead of time which park you want which day is trickier in WDW for sure, as well as ADR's for restaurants you want (esp. if they are popular). For the day-of fastpasses, just familiarize yourself with what we call the refresh method, which just meant that the day you are actually there don't believe it if it says they are out of FP's for the day for a particular ride, just keep refreshing on the ap and see what comes up (this is if they don't change anything between now and when your trip is of course). The other big tip/difference is distance. In DL proper, everything is so close together, but in MK it's spread out, so be prepared for that; more walking between things, and more time to get where you are going. Rope drop is a lot more crowded than at DL as well.

As for FQ, they did do a refurb so the rooms are indeed much more "modern" looking (that's the bland part), but enough of the theme is still there to fit in with the NO vibe. I will say that the rest of the resort makes up for the lack of theme in the rooms. We consider Port Orleans our "home" resort pick, as we love the small size, the ambience, the boats, horses, the sisterhood of PO:FQ and PO:R. We don't stay there every time (and have stayed at every level of resort), but we do keep returning here more than anywhere else. But, the resorts at WDW are so tailored to different tastes, you kind of have to just pick and hope it clicks with you when you've never been before. Oh, and that's another difference with DL; if you have extra time, do travel the monorail hotels at MK to check them out, and maybe even stroll over to the Boardwalk area outside of EPCOT... the hotels are all attractions on their own.

I personally would do the DVC rental, if only because the resorts are much nicer! POFQ is awesome too but if it was DVC vs Coronado I would absolutely do DVC. I'd suggest going for Beach Club because Beach/Yacht are my favorites. I would pass over resorts like Saratoga or Key West in favor of POFQ. They've been jacking the price up on Coronado - it can be $150 a night or $270 which is way too much for me (and I really do like Coronado).

I will definitely be on top of getting he reservations we absolutely need as there are a few places we want to try for sure. And the booking of the fast passes so far in advance seems crazy to me. Basically deciding what parks you’re doing certain days a few months in advance. And that’s a reason why WL appeals more to us. Having everything in the same area is a huge plus over Kidani Village.

So it looks like I’m going to be choosing between Boulder Ridge Studio or Jambo House studio. Originally thought Kidani was all that was available but since there’s availability at Jambo I’d rather be in the main building. Jambo is a bit less expensive and from pictures I like the rooms better. Boulder Ridge rooms seem to be very dark and cavelike although I’m not sure if YouTube and pictures do it justice or not. But I do like the location of Boulder Ridge more than Jambo.

For a 1st trip, animal kingdom Jambo all the way. There is nothing like it. And the pool is amazing too. It has the best quick service in my opinion - the Mara. I’d rent points there over booking a room at a moderate. Again, that’s just me. If you can find availability and splurge though, i’d consider monorail resorts. We own at Poly and just love it. Grand Floridian would also be very romantic. But, Animal Kingdom will knock your socks off. It’s amazing.

Oh, and regarding the difference between Disneyland and Disney World, we are the opposite of you. We were shocked at how laid back DL was. How uncrowded those first few hours were. I’d say just expect it to be crowded all the time, and book fastpasses for what you really want and be OK not doing it all. DL is so much smaller, not just in number of parks, but just walking ride to ride. You can do more there in my opinion. Disney World has more to see though, and has some awesome rides!

Thanks for the input. Before I saw your post I actually got confirmation of our DVC rental reservation at Jambo House. We are very excited!!
