Is there anything special you do with your kids on the first day of school? My DS will start K next month.

My mom worked when I was little but she was always home with me after school on the first day.

So far, for K2-K5, we have taken a picture in front of the school on the first day. This year DS6 will start 1st grade at public school (think very big) so I don't know if I will be able to do that anymore...:(

On the 1st day of preschool we saw a friend from church dropping her son off. I said "oh look, there's your friend with his mom and she's taking his picture with his teacher".

DS said (at almost 4) "mom, you don't have to take my picture". He seemed embarassed I even thought about it then!!

He was just ready to go.

We take the obligatory picture on the front step the first morning and after school we have a "first day of school" cake I have either decorated or bought, with ice cream of course! Family Fun have had a few cute ones, one like a chalkboard, the other a school bus.

I take a picture on the first day each year. Don't forget to take a picture on the last day of school! It's cool to see how much your child has grown! Oh, I also always leave a note in my DD's lunch box on the first day.

I took pics at the bus with both DD's first day of kindergarten. There were some kids that had parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles at the bus stop on the first day. I thought that was a little too much.

My son and I did the picture in front of the school thing when he was younger. Now that he's going into the 8th grade that's out of the question. For the last two years we've taken pictures in front of our house before he leaves for school.

Last year I cooked a big pot of chili on the first day of school. We were talking about school a few days ago and my asked me if I'd make chili on the first day again this year. :)

Mountaineer, will your son be taking his lunch to school on the first day? If so, how about putting a special little note, picture or card inside his lunch box that day.

I have taken pictures of my kids on the front porch on the first day since they started kindergarten (with they lunch boxes and backpacks). I told my son that I was going to drive 5 hours to his college and take his picture the first day of class, and I think he was actually frightened for a moment!

We have made it a tradition to take a picture of the girls in front of the tree in our yard. Don't know why, but we've done it since my oldest DD started preschool!

I take my daughter out to dinner at a place of her choosing (Chuck E. Cheese's or Pizza Hut usually) after the day is done.

I always take a photo of my kids on the first day of school. Sometimes it's inside, sometimes outside.

DD just graduated HS in June. On her first day of kindergarten (way back in 1991) I had made a sign wishing her a "Happy First Day of School" and I had a big helium balloon attached to it and they were both in the yard. I, of course, took her photo with it.

So..... this year, upon the urging of her friend, she put on her cap and gown and clutched a helium balloon with "Class of 2004" and stood by a sign in the yard that said: "Happy LAST Day of School."

DS will be in 10th grade - so I have a couple of more years to do this. :)

Thanks for the great ideas!! We have taken pictures of my son on his first day in each of his classrooms at his daycare.

He will move into the kindergarten room in September and wanted to do something special. I like the idea of the special cake and special dinner:D

I have always taken the first and last day of their school off. DDs are in different schools for now, so that is 4 days of my vacation but well worth it. We do pictures. Last year was DDs first year in 'real' school (kindergarten). We let her ride the bus, but then drove to the school and took pictures as she came off the bus. After school the girls get to decide on their choice of restaurant. It is their day! I love sharing the memories with them.

We take pictures of DS here at home, then while he's in school we go and let Belle pick out a balloon and get a back to school cake. He gets the balloon in the car after school then we go visit with Nana and have dinner with the family - his pick.

We figure if we make a big deal out of it he'll think it's cool and keep doing a great job at school!

I have taken a picture of DD in front of the fireplace every first day of school. It is really neat to see her year after year in the same place and how much she has grown.

I always have DH take a picture. I teach as well but in another district so I have to leave before they all do. This last year was DS's first day of K so I had someone cover a class so I could run home and take pictures of him getting on the bus, then at school. But it all depends on my schedule--I couldn't do that for DD#2, and this year with 1st period planning I wouldn't have been able to either.
I will usually pick the elementary kids up that first day. The jr. high DD gets home 10 minutes before I do.

We take each kid's picture in front of the same spot in the house each year.

Our elementary school is 5 blocks away, so we - and pretty much the whole neighborhood - walk our kids to school on the first day. I think it is just so sweet seeing so many parents walking their kids to school the first day!

I always take their picture in the same place on the front steps of the house (fun to see how both the kids and the house changes!). Also as soon as they get home I turn on the video camera and ask them to tell me about their day (new classmates, new teachers, school lunch etc)..........................P
