First day of school traditions?

:) I always take a picture of the girls (now 8 and 10) in front of the door with backpacks, lunch boxes, and new clothes...so fun to look at old pics! I take them into the school, walk them to class, and take their picture outside their new room. Older DD asked me not to do this in 3rd Grade, but last year in 4th she was fine with it again! I also bake them a cake that looks like a chalkboard for after school and we have a dinner they love like tacos or spaghetti. Only 2 1/2 weeks to go for us!

My mom used to take pictures of us somewhere outside in our yard on the first day every year. Then after school she'd take us out for dinner. But somewhere around the time I hit the 6th or 7th grade we began to have a lot less time and none of that happened anymore.

My oldest DS starts Kindergarten tomorrow. I like the idea of dinner of his choice tomorrow night. I better make sure I have film for the camera. Thanks for the ideas!

Wow, tomorrow. We don't start school here until Sept. 8th.

Anyhow, our tradition is that each girl makes a poster with their favorite things they like to do and we write "First day of Kindergarten" and the YEAR or (whatever grade they're going into). We have all the pics and the girls really enjoy making their "First day poster".

We have year round school here in Colorado. My son is actually one of the later tracks to start. Our neighbors started the week after the fourth of July.

We always took a picture of our girls by the doorbell on our front porch. That way we could see how much they grew from year to year because the doorbell didn't move! No pictures by the doorbell this year though. My "baby" is starting college 4.5 hours away.::yes::

I am a High School teacher. The first thing I do on the 1st day of school is:

:crazy2: THROW UP !!!:crazy2:

I then walk into the teacher's lounge and annouce:

:scared1:"Only 182 days until summer vacation!' :scared1:

Then after meeting all the students: :drinking1 :drinking1 :drinking1

This year it's off to 3rd grade and as years past my DD will go off with a kiss from mommy to keep close to her through the day. Mommy also gets a kiss from her to have...We actually draw a little pair of lips on each others tummies and kiss them. Even if this sounds "corny" to others, it's our tradition. We love it.

gee, it sounds like all of you are good moms..................

i mark each summer day off on the calender with a big X.
the day school starts i put smilie face stickers on that date.

get the kids up very early, go to dunkin doughnuts, feed them, send them to school and then i go shopping to celebrate............

summer is long you know.

We take a photo of our kids on our front porch before they leave for school. It's amazing to see just how much they've grown since preschool days of long ago.

I used to take the first day off (as it used to be a 1/2 day). But now they have change it to a whole day I usually come to work.

What I do now instead is to take a day off the week before school starts(as long as it's nice) and take my DD & her Best Friend to a local water/amusement park for the day.

They love it and I enjoy watching them have fun. I always do the picture thing too.

In September my oldest DD is going to preschool and will be experiencing her 1st day of school for the first time. I would like to start a "tradition" so it can be something that we can do - until of couse it is not cool. The picture is a definite!!

Thanks for the ideas.

Lisa

All the ideas are great. I'm definitely doing the picture here at home. I think I'll take one as soon as he gets home too to see how big his smile is. My problem is that I can't believe he's going to Kindergarten!!

my dad always used to say: "work hard, have fun, and learn new things." on the first day of school. it is a good motto for life, as well as school, i think. :sunny:
