Hello, I will be taking my very first cruise, Disney or other, May 2011 aboard the Dream. I am in a wheelchair and have reserved an accessible room (Concierge Family Statroom with Verandah). I wanted to know if anyone had any pointers though? I have some mobility but I truely try not to let anything stop me. My cruise will make two stops at Castaway Cay, one in Nassau and a day at sea. I would like to go over to Atlantis while in Nassau. How difficult is this and is it worth the time, effort and cost? I am aware CC has beach wheelchairs and plan to make use of those. Has anyone ever used them? If so, could you tell me a bit about your experience?

I appreciate everyone's input.

Thanks,

Mike

I don't know yet about how accessible Nassau is, but I will be going there next week and can let you know how accessible I find it. I travel with a scooter, but will keep my eyes open to any issues that may come up. I have heard that it is hit or miss for accessibility there and there is only one wheelchair accessible van that can handle any power chairs. I heard that most in wheelchairs use manual ones, due to those being able to fold up and can fit in a trunk.

If you want you can PM me and I can give you a link that I have found useful for planning cruises. They cover all cruise lines on it.

That would be great if you could let me know how accessible it is. I do use a manual chair.

I've been kind of busy and did not get time to post this previously, but one of the posts in the disABILITIES FAQs thread is about the Disney Cruise Line.
You can find the disABILITIES FAQs thread near the top of this board or follow the link in my signature to get there. Post #1 of that thread is an index that tells what information is in which post.

Couple a quick tips:

1. Avoid the middle elevators on the ship. The elevators are very small and it seemed like the middle elevators were busier than the front and rear elevators. Allow a little extra time for the elevators. You may have to wait for a couple of them until you get one with enough space.

2. The beach wheelchairs are great and there appear to be plenty available. However, there is no shade where they are located. You may want to bring something to cover your chair while you are using the beach chair.

Have a great time.
