Need to get my son a first communion suit any websites I should check out so I don't have to pay so much for a suit they wear for 2 hours?

At our church most of the boys just wore khaki slacks, a button down shirt and a tie. We lucked into a hand me down light light light brown pair of dress pants and a matching vest.. He wore a white dress shirt and a tie and looked great.

I bought my son's suit at Penneys. I thought it was reasonable. He wore it a few more times after first communion.

I am a RE Coordinator and I also tell the families it's up to what their family wants to do or can afford.

Each year we have one or 2 boys in a white suit, but usually it's dark dress pants, white dress shirt and tie and dress shoes. That's what my own 3 boys wore and looked just as handsome as can be.

DD wore a simple white dress that my friend had found on clearance at Penney's for $15 the year before. DD wore that dress to a Mardi Gras ball and then the next year to her First Communion and then a few more times before she out grew it.

At our school, we would exchange the boy's suits from year to year. We borrowed a suit from RE, and then returned it to be reused by another child the next year. At that age, in second grade, kids grow so quickly. We also gave them the dress shoes we bought for someone else to use.

Now, he is in 10th grade. The suit we bought for 8th grade graduation still fits, and so he wears it to HS dances and things.

Same here. I bought a suit for Confirmation, which was in February of 2013. He wore it for graduation and homecoming this year. He will also wear it in a couple weeks for the Snowball. I got this one at Penney's also. Not sure how much longer it will fit though.

When my boys had their first communions I did not want to mess around with making sure a suit fit them. Especially when I knew they would never wear it again. My boys are 18 months apart but the younger one was bigger so DS2 would not be able to wear DS1s suit.

I just went to the tux shop and rented them a basic tux for their day. It was sized properly, included everything and I just gave it back when we were done. They looked adorable!!!

We got ds15's at marshalls for $30 (bought up every size for his friends), ds10's at Target (was just there - now is the time), or do what a pp did and rent. So much cheaper than the girls (our dresses cost about $170, and then there is the veil, shoes, hair...).

Check e-bay. My DS went as "slender man" for Halloween and I bought him a beautiful three piece suit (lined jacket, vest, pants) with white dress shirt and tie, NWT, for $30. I think it came from China, but was well made and arrived quickly. I would purchase from there again when he needs another one.

I rented a suit from Men's Warehouse last year. It included the suit, shirt, tie, & shoes! Great deal since the suit & shoes would never be worn again. I think it was only $50????

Wow, that was pretty pricey for an 8 yo. I don't run with a name-brand crowd, but the average cost here for little girls is about half that, including shoes and veil, and very few people invest in professional hair styling. Catholic Supply is local, but no one I know shops there for a dress, as they are overpriced. We most commonly get the dresses at either Penneys or Burlington Coat Factory (which is popular with the girls b/c many of their dresses come with a matching dress for a doll.)

Around here, the big ticket item for girls is jewelry; it is customary for girls to get either gold cross-shaped earrings or a pearl bracelet. I'm going to pass down my own cross earrings to DD.

As for DS, I bought him a pr. of black uniform khakis and a white oxford shirt at Old Navy (on sale right now, for $10/ea. BTW), and a boys' zipper tie from Burlington Coat Factory for less than $5. The belt was an old one of mine that I cut down for him and re-punched.. The dress shoes came from Once Upon a Child. (I don't normally buy used shoes, but the exception is dress shoes for little kids. Normally they have only been worn once for a few hours, and will cost less than $10 at OUAC.) I think I paid around $30 for everything except his crucifix.

Burlington Coat Factory has worked well for us for communion suits and dresses.

Some churches ask that the boys wear all-white suits, but not all of them do. If you don't need the all-white suit, and navy or black is acceptable - Sears, Macys and most online stores can get you a suit for about $80. My DS is a bit rambunctious and we had a big dinner with family afterwards where he was still going to wear the suit, so I did NOT want to rent. For sure, he would have stained it or tore a hole in the knee or something. I would have spent the entire party hovering.

Also, when he needed a suit for a school project (only going to wear the suit once), we clearly wanted to spend a lot less than that. We put together a suit, tie, button-down shirt and shoes from Once Upon a Child for about $30 just like one of the previous posters. He looked pretty darn amazing. So, you should definitely check your local area for consignment and resale shops - chances are there are plenty of "worn just once" suits out there.

I rented a suit from a local tuxedo rental shop for under $80. Three piece , shirt and tie.

OP be sure to check what the dress code is for your church. Our has a strict dress code of navy blue suit. pants & coat (no vest allowed) and a white shirt & white tie.

We had 2 boys last year show up in grey suits & they were turned away.

Zulily has infant, toddler, & boys suits on sale today. I don't know if they'd match what you need but they have some for under $30.

A lot of DS12's friends got their white suits at Burlington Coat Factory, but that was 5 years ago, so I'm not sure if they still carry them.

We got DS's at Wild Plums in Southie, but they've closed.

Please let us know where you end up finding his suit. I have a DS who will need one next year.

OK, that is just WRONG. Oh, so wrong. The church should be concentrating on their souls, not their clothing. They are denying someone a SACRAMENT because of the color of their suit? I mean, come on! I suspect Pope Francis would NOT be happy with this one.

And yes, I'm Catholic. But I definitely would be finding a different Parish that concentrates on the true teachings of the church after an incident like this.
