Is it true that DCL's ships are the only cruise ships that do fireworks ?

......and if so why don't other cruise lines do fireworks ?

Curious to know. :confused3

I have never seen any other cruise line advertise fireworks on their ships, so I think it's safe to say that DCL is the only line that does them. I have no idea why other lines don't do fireworks. From what I've read, Disney is the largest consumer of fireworks in the world, so they definitely have much more experience with them than any other company.

DCL is the only cruiseline that does fireworks at sea....why I am not really sure but I think they are the only ones who went through the process to get approved for them....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard on the "Disney Cruise Line" show in the Travel Channel that only Disney does fireworks on the sea. I think I also heard them claim that it is copyrighted (or something like that) so that no other cruise line can have fireworks at sea...

At least that what I heard in the show. I'm not so sure anymore because it's been a long time since the last time I've seen it.

Maybe other DISers can confirm? :confused3

I have heard that Disney owns the (multiple) patent rights to be able to launch fireworks from cruise ships.

DCL is the only ones in the world to do fireworks at sea, but if you notice when you leave port on fireworks night, the other ships get closer than at any other time. The captains do this so their poor miserable people can see the fireworks too!

I too have heard this, Disney is the only cruise line to have fireworks. My understanding in this regard is that fire is a HUGE concern on a cruise ship, see Carnival Splendor, and therefore most ships do not use them. I always thought that was the reason. I can imagine the hurdles the cruise lines would have to jump over to get approved. Leave it to Disney! I can't wait to see the fireworks! :woohoo:

Can't you do pretty much whatever you want when the ship is in international waters? I thought that's how they all get away with casinos.

I believe there are still maritime laws that need to be followed even if a ship is out at sea...

I do believe that it has to do with distress signals. Back a hundred or more years ago if a ship was in distress they set off fire works with the hope of receiving help in time. I thought I heard that DCL had to get permission from the coast guard and they have to tell them exactly what possision and time they are going to set them off. There are still flare guns used by boaters so that is my take on why they are the only ones to be able to use fireworks

I read somewhere that there will not be fireworks on the Wonder Alaska cruises this summer :sad2: I am hoping that rumor will be dismissed when the first folks come back in May. But, if there are environmental concerns related to shooting off fireworks, I guess I wouln't be surprised that even Disney can't shoot them off there - keeping my fingers crossed though!

Along with sinking, fire has always been the major concern with any ship or boat since the beginning of time.

Here's the answer straight from DCL

http://disneycruise.disney.go.com/s...vities/deck-parties/pirates-in-the-caribbean/

"Fireworks

As part of the Pirates IN the Caribbean deck party, revel in a spectacular fireworks display—the only one in the world that is offered by a cruise line. "

and after some more research I found that Disney owns the patent on compressed air fireworks, no combustables are used to "shoot" them which is why I assume they can do them at sea nad others cannot.

I wonder how they light the fuse?

Thanks for the link.

Disney site doesn't make it easy to find some of these things.

The reason they shoot them with an air compressor and not a fuse is so that you can't see the fire works come out of the shoot/ They do this at all of their parks also... so i assume that this is one reason why the CG allowed them to do this. pirate:

The Disney vessels where designed and built to have a safe area from which to launch the shells and as mentioned use air or a gas to fire them off thereby greatly reducing the chance of fire or accident.

The vesels classification socity approves the design and use of fireworks on the vessel. Without their approval, the vessel underwriters would never permit it.

The USCG I am sure reviewed the plans and operation, but they usually just rubber stamp the class approvals. Remember the fireworks are in the Bahamams or away from US waters.

As to why the other lines don't use them............it's expensive is the likely reason.

We didn't have fireworks while on Baltic cruise - due to laws over there - turned out it poured rain the night of the party so they would have been cancelled anyway

I read this information on a DIS Trip report, but here are some of the requirements DCL must go through in order to set off fireworks at sea:

They must launch all fireworks before entering back into the United States. Therefore if they can not launch them for Pirate night due to the weather, etc., they will have to launch them before they enter back into the United States.

They must alert all surrounding ships that they are going to be launching fireworks and when they will be starting, how many and any changes. We had several ships nearby that were watching the fireworks.

Starting about 5-10 minutes before they must give the coast guard 30 second updates on what is happening Plus updates on changes or if things go wrong.

They have a system which shuts the fireworks off as soon as something goes wrong.

We were talking with some people in the theater and they mentioned that there is an upper limit to the amount of pyro that they can carry onboard. All of the effects that are in the evening show must be balanced with the number of shells for the fireworks. If they need more pyro for a show, they have to take away something from the fireworks or if they want more fireworks, they need to remove some pyro from the shows. I understood they were stored in the same place on the ship.
