Can you purchase firewood at FW?? i was told that you need an enclosed fire pit (with screens) to be able to have a fire at your own site. We purchased one and would rather not have to bring wood all the way from Connecticut!!

It's my understanding that you cannot have a wood fire of any kind at FW, unless I'm mistaken or that's changed. Some folks have been seen having a "campfire" in their charcoal grill but you're not supposed to do that either. Somewhere on this forum there was a whole thread on campfires at your site! But, I do think that if you want a campfire, you have to go to organized program held near the Meadows each night.

You can buy firewood at local Publix Grocery stores.

You are correct about the firepits. You can use them at your site as long as it has the sides and most importantly - a lid. We once were using ours without the Lid on in it and a CM came by and asked us if we had a lid. We put that on and everything was fine. They just don't want the sparks getting out since the canopy of trees around the sites can dry.

We have seen people TRY to use them and have seen the CM's tell them to put them out and not use them again. I would not bother hauling it. They have the campfire program to use.

Guess it depends on the CM. I'll be there again this weekend and will let you know if things have changed since we went last month.

We were there Christmas time and a ton of people had enclosed fire pits. We asked and were told they are OK. But in the paper work they give you it says no. Publics does sell fire wood.

Wanted to post an update after our trip 2 weeks ago. We were in the 1400 loop and there were about 6 sites using FirePits (including ours) since the temp was about 40. They did make one site put theres out because it didn't have a lid. I spoke with the CM and he said they are fine as long as they are enclosed.

can someone post a pic or a link where i can see one of these things. can't get a mental picture of what a "firepit with a lid that could be transported in my camping gear" would look like.

we love a campfire and camping at FW and if this is the only way we can get the two together, then we might have to look into it.

i too was under the impression that campfires (other than the one at the sing along) were a strict no-no anytime of year at the fort.

why in the _ _ _ _ would you want to drag that along. Who is at there site that long,we are always on the go. Please note this is just my opinion.

Also seen them in Walmart and Target for a whole lot less money. I believe Cabellas offers one also. I'd even check out the Camping World catalog. They are pretty popular now. People use them at their homes in the yard where your town codes would require a fire to be enclosed something like that.

Our folds up and takes up very little room in the basement storage of our motorhome...and to answer your question directly...ANYONE WITH YOUNG CHILDREN THAT DON'T WANT THEM TO FALL INTO A FIRE. No matter how much you watch them, accidents happen...and this makes it atleast a little safer. In my book, that is worth the hassle!! :wave2:

What kind did you get that folds up, and where did you get it? We're under a burn ban here in Central Texas for open fires (severe drought), but most campgrounds allow enclosed firepits. I just haven't been able to find one like you described, and I don't have the room for a regular one. Thanks!

I just saw on the Weather channel this AM that most of Florida, including Orlando, was under a red flag warning because of the dry conditions and very high fire danger.
I would look for the fire rules to be enforced (whatever they are) until this condition changes.

I Agree with Bigdisneydaddy. With the red flag warnings I would hope that FW would not allow fires.

Bought it at Dick's Sporting Goods on clearance...I'm not sure of the brand, but it came in a small box and comes apart for storage!

I agree with both of you...I'm going end of April, hopefully the warnings won't be up anymore by then!
