Fires on sites...........

Ok, prior to my trip in January to the campgrounds, I was told (and saw the signs at the comfort stations) that no fires were allowed (exposed fires) on the sites. However, I noticed pretty much, probably 20% of the people in the 2000 loop were using their grills as small (safe) campfires.

My question is, does anyone mind this? If I wanted a nightly, small fire in my grill (I'm thinking very very small), will anyone likely say anything? Is this a common thing? I'm just curious because it was as if I missed a memo allowing it or something. If I can do it, I'd like to but I dont want to cause issues.

I'm hoping to get in the 1500 loop this week so I'm not sure if its any different there.

I have heard that Disney will not allow a campfire in the grill . (however, I have done this before, a very small fire, and no one said anything)
Now we hava $40.00 portable "screen covered firepit" that we got at Wally Weird,,which Disney does allow.

I wamted one of those amd they told me that een they were prohibited. Anyone have any input on this?

The covered fire pit are allowed and required by The Fort now.

Yeah, i called and they said pretty much any open air fire is not allowed. I asked for clarification and he said even the grilled pits are not allowed and that the only thing allowed is like a fire oven which the fire is 100% internal (and he said its not worth your effort or money to get one).

That sucks. Maybe we'll just do a little tiny one in the grill and see how long we get away with it. I mean heck, I'm talking SMALL fire.

Call again and talk to someone else. The small mesh surround/metal tops are usually allowed, or many people get away with them.

OK, I finally got some help from a great staff member at FW. Hopefully this may help those in the future as well..........

I now see why I got two different answers when I called two times before, and then got different answers here...........................

Firepits ARE allowed ONLY under this circumstance:

It has to have a solid metal bottom, mesh on the SIDES, and a solid metal top. The top part is the key. The top has to be SOLID.

Now, I dont know how much of "sticklers" they are with this rule but I figured I'd pass it along.

She said the ones with just mesh tops are technically not allowed (I get the feeling alot goes without issue at the camp as people had full blown fires in their grills in Jan.).

I usually lurk, but this issue is too important to ignore.

There are Fort attendants that will come and ask you to put out any fires not in an approved fire pit and will wait while you put out the fire, or will douse the fire if no one is outside with the fire.

Florida is in the wildfire season right now.

Even a small fire can result in a large problem if it gets out of control. When we went to the Fort in 2009, we were told that we could use a firepit if it had a solid bottom and top with mesh sides and if we used a firelog vice wood.

BUT when there is a fire ban, there is reason, no matter where you are. FL, MO or WA. Smokey Bear has a reason.....

We were down over xmas, had found a fire pit AKA old weber grill and had a fire.

No kidding. Wow, I am bummed, as this pretty much just changed our entire plans. How can you go camping without a campfire? I just never even imagined this was possible. We don't have a fancy camper with cable tv and whatnot, so a campfire is your downtime at night.

Obviously, I understand why you can't have a fire during a fire ban. I lived in Arizona and understand the concept of wildfires.

Are fire bans in Orlando often, or a certain time of year?

Just FYI, I just got back from the campgrounds and can tell you this...........its pretty clear why the ban is there. First off, Florida is already starting to light on fire in various places but even at the camp its so dry and there's so many pine needles on the ground, that entire place would go up like a christmas tree that hasnt been watered in 3 months.

It does suck but now I at least understand it after having been there. The entire place is landscaped with pine needles.

They always have 2 nice fires going at the campfire/movie. We just hop on over there and roast our marshmallows.
