Does anyone own the Firefly child's cellphone? I think we are going to purchase one for DD6 tomorrow, but was hoping to hear if anyone had any reviews. It seems to have the basics that we would feel is necessary, but I would love any feedback you've got to give.
Thanks!

We bought our oldest child one to keep on him in case of emergencies (danger at school, etc) -- we chose the firefly because he can only call numbers that we program into the phone. We also liked the fact that we didn't have to add it to our monthly bill -- rather- we buy prepaid minutes.

No problems with the phone -- but DS had it taken away by us a couple months ago. He was told by us that it was to stay in his backpack at school. School rules say cell phones not allowed out during day. His teacher caught him showing some kids in the lunch line -- he lost the phone. We haven't decided when to give it back to him.

My niece had one starting at age 8.

It worked really well, and after 2 years of responsible use she just got a "real" phone.

We loved the concept but found it had poor reception where ever DD tried to use it. We ended up getting her a phone and adding it to our plan. It really does not cost much more than the Firefly b/c their minutes expire so you have to keep buying them even if you are not using them all. We pay$10/month and got her phone for free. I think the firefly was around $80.

For a price reference: We bought our Firefly in August at Target for $40 and it came with minutes (can't remember exactly how many)

We bought one for my grandmother (89 yo) as she walks 3 miles a day and we wanted her to have something in case of emergencies. I think it would be great for disney as it has a clip and you don't have to worry about your child leaving it on a ride, you can clip it to her belt loop. I actually thought about buying one for my youngest (4) so that if God forbid he got lost I could call him and whoever had him could answer and tell me where they were, or if he was close enough MAYBE I could hear it ring. We ended up just getting him a medic alert bracelet for now.

As for the firefly its a little difficult to program but once you get all the names you want into it, its very easy to use.

I bought a Migo for my daughter for our first trip to Disney w/o DH. It was a phone very similar to Firefly through Verizon. Since we each already had a Verizon plan, it was easy to put both accounts together, add DD and it was only $10 more a month. Problem is, it too is annoying to program since you can only have 4 numbers programmed in at a time, plus 911. However, I felt safe knowing she had a phone and if we were separated, I told her to immediately find a CM, then call me. I didn't want her wandering around, obviously alone, trying to find me. I felt better knowing she'd be accompanied by a CM while waiting for me to get to her. It also made her feel like she had more control, should we get separated.
