Fire in my BBQ

Started the old grill, first time since last summer.

Go into the house for a cold one, come back and the flames are all over the OUTSIDE of the grill

I turned off the gas and I was lucky I didn't get burned

I guess I had some spiderwebs that blocked the gas jets,


Let this be a warning

Let this be a warning

A warning for what?? Spiderwebs, or forgetting to check the grill? Urban legend in my family says gasoline creates 12-foot flames in a charcoal grill. Unfortunately I was too young to witness that fiasco.

It is no laughing matter, and scared the crap out of me.

The warning was to check for spiderwebs or blockages in the gas jets

I saw that warning too for my gas BBQ. It is a serious matter and I'm glad to hear you were able to shut the gas off safely. That would scare the heck out of me. It's something that should be checked often during grilling season.

I'm unreasonably afraid of fire, so I gave the grill to my DD and her family. Let her hubby check it out.

I did not mean to make light of a very dangerous situation, but when it does not happen to you, it is easier to laugh about it. Several days from now, you will also be able to laugh about it.

A couple of years ago, our oldest DD (now 4) touched our just turned off grill, and burned the you know what out of her hand. Very scary at the time, but something we can smile and even laugh about now. In fact she will drag her younger sister (19 mo) away from the grill if it is still hot.

I actually had a similar thing happen. The lower portion of the grill apparently had alot of built up grease and lit up one day. I noticed a whole lot of smoke and then quickly looked and saw flames shooting out the bottom. Killed the gas and removed the tank (thank God for the quick disconnect valve) Ran into the kitchen and grabbed the fire extinguisher and put out the fire (and a 5 lb coil of Italian sasuage).

Moral: Keep the grease pan/bottom of the grill clean and free of grease.
