Finding yard sales

It's been AGES since I went to a yard sale, but I am in the mood. Can anyone tell me if they still put these in most papers? In the Friday editions? What time is best to go? You usually need cash, right? Sorry for the dumb questions, but I figure with as many people on here who have them, someone can give me some tips on finding them.

You can usually find the big ones advertised in the newspaper, but I don't like to hunt for addresses so I usually drive through residential areas following signs (of course this works better in smaller towns). Yes, you need cash, and unless you're looking for more expensive items like furniture you should bring change, ones and fives because those are the easiest for people to give change for. I've found that the best time to go is early Saturday morning, around 8am.

In our area, Thursdays & Fridays are good days to go garage sale shopping. They are advertised in the local papers.

I have several "tactics" for finding yardsales. Of course there are the newspapers. Where I live, a lot of people don't advertise in the regular classifieds of a newspaper since it costs so much. I do subscribe to our local newspapers anyways though, since I like to read the news. I also check out the section of the newspaper that has "community news" since those sections will usually list yardsales put on by churchs or civic groups etc.

I also keep my eyes peeled at the bulletin boards at the grocery stores etc and keep mental notes. And for me, there is also a local community based website that has free online classifieds so a lot of people advertise their yardsales there. Because of my own website, I've been in contact with other webmasters who think they have a great idea and want to create a "nationwide" online yardsale list, but everytime they fail.

I like going to the subdivision sales where lots of people have yard sales. Keep an eye out for those and be there early.

I live in a small town that has a radio station with Trading Post/Swap Shop in the morning & afternoon. People call in with their Yard Sales to that. One of the ladies who works there is addicted to yard sales, so they are good about listing them, especially on Friday. Maybe if you have such a station in your area, they might do the same.
