FINALLY updated 8/20 - 8 nights of vegetarian dining on the DDP - with pictures!!

OH WOW! How can I thank you enough! Your reviews are awesome! I am a vegetarian myself and you showed me more about WDW dining items than I ever knew existed! I agree w/you on the Boma potato salad - I think it's fantastic and I agree that the Sunshine Season's one is too saucy! The Coral Reef food looked fabulous! Thanks again for taking the time to do this - you are awesome!

:thumbsup2 Great thread. We are not vegetarians but we do not eat pork so it's nice to read that some of the CMs were proactive about telling you what foods had pork in them.

Did you tel your servers that you were vegetarian? I am wondering if I am going to have to tell our servers that we don't eat pork or just ask if the non obvious menu items have or are cooked in pork products? :confused3

I know I'm late, but I just read and enjoyed your report. Thanks for posting. I am not vegetarian but I really love tofu and vegetarian dishes in general. :stitch:

We did tell our servers at the buffets so that they could tell us or have a chef go through the buffet with us to show us what was vegetarian. The waitress that morning WAS exceptional, although in our experiences CP has been very helpful about dietary needs (H & V also had an outstandingly helpful chef a few years ago). Ironically, we seem to be among the minority of vegetarians who've yet to encounter a CM at Boma who gives a rip that we're vegetarians.

At non-buffet TS, it was generally pretty obvious what was and was not vegetarian, but if it's unclear, we ask. Disney is pretty good about that, though...the only thing we sometimes need to check on is gelatin in desserts, but it seems like most of the Disney restaurants are pretty good about it---again, exception being Boma, which has almost no vegetarian desserts (can you tell I take some issue with Boma?).

Thanks for all the comments! And swankybeth---I LOVED your thread a few months back!

I really enjoyed your reviews. You don't see many vegaterian reviews on the boards. You mentioned that you would be going back. If you don't mind me asking where are you planning on eating. I would love to hear some suggestions.

So far we have...
2 Chefs de France
2 Crystal Palace breakfasts (8:05), 1 late breakfast early lunch there, 1 dinner at CP (yes, this may be overkill)

Le Cellier
Coral Reef---but we're calling ahead as they no longer have strudel on the menu

Rose & Crown---new to us
'Ohana---also new

Probably another one...we may do some swapping, but Chefs is for sure twice, and CP will definitely be more than once. We have a Le Cellier lunch (as well as the dinner) that we're not sure about and might be changing yet.

This has been such a wonderful and helpful thread. I've recently become a vegetarian and was a little concerned about what I would eat while at WDW! Now, I'm not at all worried about it, and have been taking notes from your postings! Thanks so much for doing this and taking all the great pictures!

Excellent reviews! We seem to be getting a lot of vegetarian reviews these days...yippee!!

We ate at Crystal Palace for lunch on our last trip and thought that it was very good. We're returning on our next trip to try it out for dinner. I'm also a big fan of the Lighthouse sandwich. All of the components of the sandwich really go well together. I agree that the chili is good, but I have taken to just sticking with the sandwich too!

Can't wait for the next installment.

After reading this, we're going to have to make Columbia Harbor House a must do. My husband has GOT to try that sandwich!

Top Chef[/U] and recall the "pepper monkey" comment, well, that's me, so I thought this was great. I also loved the spinach and the mushrooms (and I'm not a big mushroom fan). I thought this was a great appetizer. I don't know if we'd all order it next time, because it would be so acidic eating it all yourself, and it is pretty big. But it may be worth the canker sores.

I was a little disappointed that we weren't offered any options beyond what was on the menu for an entree, as when my cousin had been here the chef said he could come up with something else if she liked...however, I think they just do the one option because they do it so well. It was Grilled Tofu and Vegetables - Millet salad and finished with roasted vegetable nage.

This tasted a LOT better than it looks. The larger white piece is grilled tofu, which had a really nice, well, grilled flavor. I don't like things that try to taste like meat, but this captured that off-the-grill flavor without seeming too much like meat. Did that make any sense? It was really good, anyway.

The grain was millet. The texture was a little like bulgur, if that's more familiar. Vegetables included the two spears of asparagus (my sister and I ended up with three, as my mom will not eat asparagus), some grilled onions (DELICIOUS)...I think the nage had roasted pepper and tomato, but I can't really remember. It was good, though. The sauce was another balsamic, and very good. The whole thing worked together very, very well. It's quite hard to describe, but if you like vegetables and are willing to try tofu (we love tofu), I think you'll like this dish. We were very impressed and thought it was one of the best thought out, most balanced vegetarian dishes we'd seen.

Of course, since it's almost fall, they'll probably change it to a winter dish soon  But I'm sure it will be good as well.

For desserts, Mom & Sister had Strawberries and Balsamic Ice Cream and I had Maple Creme Brulee:

[The second strawberries and balsamic toppled over as she was bringing it out...she offered to get a new one and we said it was fine, it would've looked that way in a few seconds anyway! I thought it was a nice offer, though.

Anyway, I got to sample the strawberries and they were delicious. It was not a very large portion, if you're wondering. My mom and my sister loved them, and my sister worked hard to get all of the melted ice cream and strawberry juice off of her plate. Erynn, the waitress, told her she could lick the plate and it wouldn't be the first time someone had (my sister didn't take her up on the offer, but I think she probably wanted to).

I really enjoyed my creme brulee. I hesitate to be too effusive with the praise, as this is such a hyped dessert. I went in without expectations, and so nothing to be disappointed in. Still, I thought this was a very good dessert. I was in the mood for creme brulee, though. The creamy part was really tasty, firm but still melt-in-your mouth. I thought the burned sugar had a little too burned of a flavor along the edges, but it was mostly very good. The top does not crack on this one. The cinnamon whipped cream on top was AWESOME...the whole thing (flavor-wise) reminded me a little of fried ice cream, if that helps anyone. I would order this again, but I would also order the strawberries, it would just depend on my mood. My mom and sister would both get the strawberries again.

This was a HUGE deal on the dining plan, even as vegetarians. Our waitress was terrific and we left an extra tip for her.

Wow! You've really sold me! I can't wit to go to Le Cellier. I'm sure it will be my husband's favorite meal! (He's the vegetarian-and doesn't usually get such great options!)

Thanks for the excellent reviews! I'm not all the way through but I already know I need to change our plans adding in Crystal Palace and Sunshine Seasons. It's too bad about your experience at Spoodles. I'm still up in the air about eating there--but would hate to encounter service any where near as poor as you had!

But, I have to say that as a vegan the WORST meal for me in all of WDW is at Le Cellier. Yes, it's vegan...but seriously...a tomato and a mushroom cap? With some vinaigrette dressing? That's a meal? And at an outrageous price, to boot. Wasn't impressed with it in any way, and won't go back until they change the vegetarian option!!

I have to agree, I cannot do mushrooms and I had called Le Cellier and had it on my ADR "No mushrooms, vegetarian" Every place was very accomidating, EXCEPT Le Cellier. It was kinda like oh well, we have a ceasar salad for you.

That was my dinner, tomatoe stack and hunks of lettuce called a ceasar salad (Seriously a bigger version of the starter ceasar salad they serve)! It was horrid and disappointing for my image of Le Cellier. And one heck of an expensive meal, even though we were on the DDP.

I know its a steak house but this is crazy!

The chef was outstanding at Coral Reef, I had a wonderful meal there! I called ahead since I cannot eat mushrooms and they made a wonderful dish up! :thumbsup2 It was the best meal of the trip, for the vegetarian and the meat eaters!

We called and the chef we talked to sounded very accommodating---we're hoping to get something different---usually we're pretty adventurous but the new entree sounds odd...

While we all ended up enjoying the entree at Le Cellier, we also got the vibe that they weren't terribly concerned with making any accommodations or changes for us. My mom HATES asparagus and they wouldn't even do a substitution---if you don't want the asparagus, you just have less to eat, was the gist (or jist?) of it. I thought that was a little snooty---the rave reviews seem to be going to their heads. I had read in the veg. Disney book that LC was so willing to come up with something.....that seems to have changed. Fortunately (at least for us), the pepper stuffed with black beans sounds right up our alley!

Everything looks so good and I'm not even a vegetarian. A co-worker is vegan, so I'm always checking out veggie stuff and sharing it with her which is what prompted me to read this thread. So glad I did because there are so many yummy looking things on here.

I have to come back to finish reading now that my lunch hour is over.

Okay, so, help! I've been a vegatarian for two years (haven't eaten beef or pork for 5 years) but now I'm nonplussed upon finding out that gelatin is animal bybproduct -- IS NOTHING SACRED!!

Okay, so, again, help please. Roughly speaking, what kinds of things have gelatin in them? On the desserts, you mentioned mousse had gelatin and the fruit tarts as well? All puddings? Pecan pie? Anything else? Keep in mind, I'm not a vegan, and I don't do this for religious reasons, so accidents have happened in the past (like the non-vegatarian, vegatarian hamburger I bit into at Yellowstone Nat'l Park -- "Is this REALLY a vegie burger? Oh, that? No, that's a real one." Boy was I mad; I thought I had found a perfect vegie burger.) and I don't stress too much, but no more jello? :sad1:

Any help you can give about gelatin or other animal byproducts that I may not know would be very much appreciated.

Oh, one further aside; I'm eating at Prime Time Cafe in just about a week and they have no entrees that are vegatarian friendly. I am planning on calling this Friday to ask for a special meal. Have you ever eaten there? If so, what did you order. And also, the only other restaurant with no Vegie entrees is Marakesh -- yes I know, the vegatable couscous, but I had that last time and was hoping for something a bit more adventurous. Any thoughts? Thanks so much.

I ate at prime time last september and I had:
Roasted Pepper - stuffed with whole grains and smoked ratatouille $12.49. It was ok nothing to rave about. I had now idea what ratatouille so I looked it up and it is a vegtable and the title of Disney's new movie. I had the chef call me the other day to see if there was some way he could make their pot pie without any chicken or broth and he said no. (I make a very good one at home) He said that they have veggie burgers(the same one they have at CS locations)He also said to call him if I came up with any other ideas but I just figured I would get the same thing as I got last yr. The rest of my family wants to eat there or I would just skip it all together.
Laura

Yeah, thanks, I saw that pepper but thought that ratatouille had meat in it; excellent; that's what I'll have. Any idea about foods at Disney that contain gelatin?

I just finished reading. Great reviews! Even as a non-vegetarian you had me drooling.

And it's funny that I was reading about Mom & the potato salad just as I was finishing some PS that I'd made last night. Mine was quite yummy! And not too much dressing.

The cocomisu looked and sounded so much better. I'm disappointed that you didn't like it. I'll probably still try it on our trip, but I'll go into with lower expectations.

The apple flan...it definitely looks like cheesecakse.

The veggie strudel looks delicious and sounds great...except that I don't like lentils so that would kill it for me.

Again, great report and picks! Thanks for sharing.

Oh, and after all your pics and trips to Sunshine Seasons, I've added it to our must-do list.

Thanks for your wonderful veggie reports.
You have inspired me to book chefs de france.
Thanks:banana:

Some items that have gelatin

Some Cheesecakes
Jello
Some Yougurts
Some Sour Creams
Some Chewy or hard Candies (Starburst and Conversation Hearts to name two)
Some jelled products (probably why the Fruit Tarts were out)

Typically Puddings and mousses are safe as is pecan pie (mostly that is just carmelized sugar and nuts)

Sadly lots of strange items have gelatin which can be very frustrating (it killed me to find out a cereal I liked had it  ), but I am so glad to hear that Disney's TS is so good at making sure you know what is in their food! We had some major issues with this last trip with CS I am so glad to hear that things are better at the TS.

Thank you so much for these reviews you are tempting me with Chef's but I have to say that Tomato dish looks like heaven to me, but I love Capresse salad and mushrooms so seems like a similar dish to me.

Right now I have ADR's for Jiko, Citrico's and Victoria and Albert, I hope they are all willing to work with me and be as good as some of your chefs in making sure I can eat something.

Thanks again!
