Finally committed to an e-reader

You'd do better checking out your local library. Also, some of the larger libraries in your STATE may offer statewide memberships. You just have to provide state residency to get one of their membership cards, and be able to download their eBooks. Check your state libraries' websites.

The links for the Nook & Sony are always at the END of her posts. She's great about explaining stuff like that.

I've been checking out the different library systems here in VA and I know I can access 2 of my larger areas since I live in a smaller area that doesn't have ebooks yet....but right now I have so many free books downloaded I don't think I'll need a library book for a while ;)

Thanks for the tip on the "knob" website. I find some of these free sites a little difficult to navigate and IMO, Borders is the worst.

OP, I wanted to mention something that bugged me like CRAZY the first few days I had my nook.

It is not backlit, so you need to sit next to a light (or have a cute clip on light for it ;)) but what bugged me at first was how grey and dark the page looked. It looks just like a piece of paper, which oddly, was hard to get used to.

So I wanted to make you aware of that and it was something that I quickly adjusted to. :)

For those that have researched the heck out of the Nook/Kindle, who has the better selection of free books?

Do you go into any B&N and buy the Nook? They have them in stock or is there an ordering process?

I bought mine last spring (so it may have changed since then) but I walked out with my nook the day I bought it. :)

My husband got mine in a B&N store in tax free NH :thumbsup2 since he was in the area. We don't have a B&N up here in Southern Maine. But I did see that Walmart was also selling the Nook for the same price. I try really hard not to shop Walmart(long story so no flames please) so I was happy to support another retailer and getting it for the same price.

ME TOO. I think I've spent more time researching these crazy e-readers than I did planning my wedding :lmao:

I am in some sort of funky Nook/Kindle paralysis. Can't decide...can't decide...can't decide. I'm going to end up with nothing for Christmas, my husband is tired of me waffling back and forth. I've now determined that I want one of each.

I don't understand how to search on the b&n site for 0.00.

Regarding the free books from either b&n or amazon..are they really books you'd want anyway?

Who has better pricing for ebooks usually...amazon or b&n?

On the free book search at bn.com.....go to the nookbooks tab at the top and then in the search bar at the top (when you're in the nookbook section) just type 0.00 and hit search and TONS of free books come up. you can filter over to the left by genre....romance, crime, etc. I already have 25-30 free books in my library and am just waiting for Santa to arrive. There were a lot of books I would ordinarily read, but some that I read about first and then downloaded. I am hoping the free book access will broaden my reading genres so I'll read things I usually wouldn't.

You can also search for books under $1.00, $2.00...whatever. I personally am going to read all the free stuff I can because buying a book to read once seems silly to me. We'll see how it goes.

From my reseach, it appears Amazon's prices are cheaper than B&N, but again, I'm a cheapskate and going the freebie route as long as I can.

The kicker for me in deciding was the LACK of epub support with the Kindle. Most ebooks are in epub format and Kindle does not, yet, support that. Who knows if they ever will.

Good luck deciding.

OK. I found the answer to this, in of all places, the FAQ on the B&N Nook site. Short answer is, leave them in your library until you register your Nook and then they will appear in your library on your Nook once that's up and running. When you archive your downloaded books, they will still be available in your B&N account, but not on your Nook (until you move them back to your library). So when you have finished a book, move it to the archives, so you have it, but it doesn't bog down your Nook library :)

Christmas morning just needs to hurry up already :santa:

Thank you! So I'm assuming if I have some in there that we don't need on her nook right now that I can put them in archive and get them out later. Perfect.

I've also heard that if we both have one we can share the same library. I'm hoping this is true because I am really liking it the more I look into it. I think it may be my after Christmas gift to myself if I don't get lucky and get one Christmas morning!

Same for me when I purchased mine 2 months ago.

You have to be on the same BN account and then you can share the "library". I read somewhere that there can be up to 6 Nooks on one BN account. Don't quote me on that, but I think it's up to 6.... I think it may be my after Christmas gift to myself if I don't get lucky and get one Christmas morning!
.

It's amazing what I've learned. My final decision was made at BN on Thursday. There were 3 of us looking and asking questions and that helped a lot. The BN employee was super knowledgeable too, which helped!

I called my local library and at this time they don't support ebooks, nor does our state library system. I guess that means the Kindle is the best option for me as that is the one thing that was pushing me toward the Nook.

I have had my Kindle 2 with 3G a little more then a year. DH just bought me a new black 3G Kindle 3 last month. No reason other then I wanted black. ;)

Back in October my Kindle (the 2) just stopped working. Could not have happened at a worst time. My husband had major surgery the day before for an Aneurysm and reading is my stress reliever!

I called Kindle support and I was 2 days shy of the 1 year return policy. Thank goodness! They not only replaced mine for free, they shipped me a brand new one overnight. They also gave me 30 days to return the broken one, with free shipping, to them. A great help since I was in the hospital daily with DH for the 23 days he ended up being there. They also had all of my books on the new system ready to go.

So...not only do I love my Kindle, I've had a really good experience with customer service. Just wanted to mention it for those trying to decide. :)

As much as I believe the Kindle is the better e-reader if library books are important to you, you can still get a membership through the Free Library of Philadelphia. It costs $15 per year for non-residents.

Or, go to Nookbooks, over over so the window pops up and click on "free nookbooks". They will pop up there.

I have never found any of the free eBooks to be a new bestseller, or soon to be bestseller. Some are the older books of an author who is releasing a new book. They want the advertising hype, get people hooked on their writing, and hope they will BUY their new book after reading their old book.

Outlander, was free a couple months ago. That one is very famous in that genre. But, Outlander, is a 10 year old book.

Most are 2nd rate authors wanting exposure. And a good handful at Amazon are independent authors. Amazon has started their own eBook publishing program. Many authors who could not get published at a publishing house are using Amazon to get known by releasing their eBooks free for a short period of time.

Some established authors are going the route of self-publishing, but it's slow going. Publishers not only publish books, they do all the advertising, arrange book tours for the authors, and deal directly with bookstores to get the books IN the stores and in prominent places on certain book shelves.

Personally, as I've been reading more & more badly written, free eBooks, I am turning into a Bestseller snob. :snooty: There is a good reason why publishers have turned down some people. :crazy2:

As for pricing, Amazon tends to be cheaper. But several months ago, the largest publishing houses banded together to stop Amazon selling eBooks so low. They actually wanted to RAISE their prices much higher - about the equivalent price of their actual hardcovers. The publishing houses want to set the price, not the individual stores or websites. They want an "industry standard" pricing.

Many of the houses took ALL their books (paper & eBooks) away from Amazon, until Amazon was forced to give in a few weeks later. :( It was a dark day for all eReaders - the humans, not the devices. :sad1: ) So, basically, for newer eBooks, you will find the same price no matter where you buy from. On Amazon's website, the price will often say something like, "Price set by publisher."

From my research, it appears Amazon's prices are cheaper than B&N, but again, I'm a cheapskate and going the freebie route as long as I can.

Google (the huge, unstoppable Internet giant,) has joined together with Sony, (one of the largest recording industry giants,) to try to make ePub the eBook standard.)

They are going up against Amazon, a giant unto itself, who just wants to sell their mobi format eBooks.

It is truly the "VHS vs. Beta" wars for eBooks.

My library, the NYPL, has 15,000 free eBooks. Roughly 3,000 in the genres I read, and most of them are the latest NY Times bestsellers, as this is NY. So, when I finally invest in an eReader, it will have to be a Nook or Sony. Unless, the Kindle becomes so cheap that I decide to buy both. :)

It is basically the same with Amazon too. 5-6 accounts can share the same library.

Here is the link to actually see what eBooks are available there:

I'm hoping more libraries will start doing non-resident memberships once they see how successful this program is for Philly. Every $15 membership brings in much needed funds, while city's library budgets are being cut during this economic downturn.

But you get a whole lot more freebies if you do the 0.00 search. On the "free nookbooks" link, I only have about 5 pages of freebies. When I do the search, there are loads of options to choose from. I found a bunch yesterday when I did the 0.00 search that I hadn't seen in the link. Just another option (and the chick at B&N is to thank for the tip :thumbsup2)

That is good to know :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Is there a trick to knowing or figuring out which books are NEW to the freebie section at BN.com without having to scroll through them everyday?

Sort by publication date and the newest ones will come up first.
