So after a lot of thought(mostly because I am just an indecisive person) and nagging from my husband I decided to get the Nook for Christmas. I hope it is a choice I will be satisfied with;) I'm actually excited to open it on Christmas morning!!!

I'm getting a Nook for Christmas too. You can go to B&N website and start putting free books in your account. Just sign in or create an account then follow the links or tabs.

Thanks for the info, I had no idea. So new to all this...heading there right now!!!

I created a monster. Got my wife one and she hasn't put it down yet.

You're going to love your Nook! I got one a couple of weeks ago (decided to buy myself a present;)), and it's absolutely wonderful!! DH is getting me a cover for Christmas, and hopefully some B&N gift cards. I think it's great that you can preview books before you decide to buy them. And there are a lot of free books, too!

I got some BN gift cards for my birthday in prep for my Nook that I am getting for Christmas

Love my Nook!:lovestruc

Once you get the Nook, you can go onto the shop right from the device and download wayyyyy more free books than what they offer on B&N.com I found a few I was interested in on the website, but then I went to the shop icon on the actual Nook. go to search and enter 0.00 and it will literally bring up thousands on free books. Obvioulsy they are hit or miss as to what you like to read, but I always find several when I do a search.

Plus they have Free Fridays where they will offer a free book or two every Friday. Some I take, some I pass, just depends on what is offered.

I have about 175 books on mine, that I downloaded right from the Nook and I haven't had to pay for one! (I stick to the free books for now, because I would get myself into a big pot of trouble if I started buying them..lol!!)

Yes, and check your local library online to see if they have eBooks to download online. Nooks are capable of downloading LIBRARY eBooks. They have special DRM (Digital Rights Management) licensing for the libraries. The Kindle isn't capable of downloading library books because of that.

Being able to download at home will be wonderful when you are snowed in, and can stay nice and toasty indoors.

B&N isn't the only place to get free eBooks. All eBooks in the formats of PDF and EPub will work on a Nook.

And I love them both.:lovestruc I'm sure you're going to enjoy yours.

Me too! I just told DH last night I wanted a Nook. Tonight I saw that there are free "sample" books. Anyone know how that works? Do you get the whole book? Is it only for a specific period of time, or forever?

I will say that one of the "sample" books, "the Help" by Kathryn Stockett is AWESOME!

They are whole books. It is very different from the buttons for the sample previews. The price will simply be $0.00. I'm not sure about nook eBooks, but Kindle eBooks are only free for a very limited time somewhere between hours to a few days.

Unless it is one of those books in the public domain, expect the books not to be always be there as a free download.

HOWEVER, once you have "bought" the free eBook and it is part of your eBook library at B&N, it is yours to keep, free, forever and can be downloaded later once you finally have the Nook, or re-downloaded if you delete if off the Nook. So it's best to get them when you find them. Save copies to a back-up, like a flash drive.

Here is a list for some of the free eBooks at B&N.

There are new free ones that come out all the time. I don't know how B&N lists those as some of them aren't on this list but I know they are currently free.

That's great to hear...I was so torn about which to choose and then my husband who was tired of waiting and wanted to get his shopping done before Christmas Eve said I need to pick one or not get one ;)He would have just picked one himself but he's not a big book reader(newspaper kinda guy and that's about it) so he kept saying he really didn't know what to look for.

Probably a really dumb question but asking it anyway...The ebooks on Amazon, can they only be read on a kindle or can they also be read on the nook?

Ebooks from Amazon and BN are not compatible with each other. I have the Kindle app on my phone (and the Nook app) so if there is a free book on Kindle that isn't on BN I just download it to my phone.

I also like the "wish list" option. I have been placing books on my wish list so I can keep track of them so when the price drops I can read them. I just put The Help on there. It's a good way to keep track of suggestions people put here too. I have downloaded several free books on both BN and Kindle for my phone from suggestions here too. I just downloaded a free James Patterson book (DH reads his books) from BN today.

Amazon ebooks can only be read on a Kindle, and B&N ebooks can only be read on the Nook. That's why the OP said she "finally committed" to an e-reader - you have to choose one or the other.

I have a Nook, but I don't think you can go wrong with either one. I just picked the Nook because of the ability to borrow books from the library. But, I haven't tried borrowing from our library yet, so I'm not sure what kind of availability I'll have there.

What about ebooks from places like borders.com, can they be read on either?

Enjoy your new nook. I love mine, just for the convenience and portability factor. :)

I don't borrow books from the library, so that wasn't a factor for me. I just prefer Barnes & Noble over Amazon.

I'm sure you'll love it! :santa:

And today is Friday, so B&N is offering two free books today! Don't forget to download them to your library, so you'll have lots of books waiting for you when you do finally open your nook! :)
