I finally closed on Thursday with a resale from BW for 300 points with a September use year (after only about 9 years of deciding). We are all VERY EXCITED (all welcome homes much appreciated) but I have one question. Here goes:

Every year we go to DW in late Jan/early Feb and in early Sept. I am trying to plan my booking pattern and want to know which of the two examples below is he best way to go:

1. I will get 300 points in Sept 2001: Borrow points from that now and make my reservation for Jan/Feb 2002. Get the rest of my points in September 2001 and then in Oct 2001 make my reservations for Sept 2002. Then follow this pattern every year.

2. I will get 300 points in Sept 2001: In October 2001 make my reservation for Sept 2002. In March of 2002 make my reservation for Jan/Feb of 2003. Then follow this pattern every year.

I understand that with point two it means that I will not have a res. for Jan/Feb of 2002 but I an not concerned about that. I want to get into the correct pattern.

Does any of this make sense?

Thank you all for your help

Paul

I'm also new myself, so I wouldn't feel comfortable answering your questions. But, I can welcome you.
Welcome Home!!!!!!!!

First of all Welcome Home!

Secondly ... Your 2001 September points are "active" from 09/01/01 to 08/31/02. If you use them for a reservation for anytime between those dates (even when booking 11 months in advance) you are using current 2001 points and not borrowing points.

I think your best option is one that you did not mention. Are you going to WDW this September? If so, then I would make reservations with your 2001 points for September 2001 and Jan/Feb 2002 all at once. Then, I would bank what ever you have left over into 2002. Once you've done that, then you are in the groove to follow strategy (2) :D. I think that this is the best strategy because you are always using either banked points or current points. Any banked points will be used for the September trip which is the very start of your Use Year. If you need to cancel the September trip for any reason you have a full year to use them.

You don't need to borrow points to make your reservation for Jan/Feb 2002. You can call MS tomorrow (or at the 11 month mark) and as long as the points will be in your account at the time of your vacation (which they will be) you'll be all set.

Btw, Welcome Home! :)

Let me think?

Robin. that would make sense if I needed a vacation this Sept but I am all set with previously arranged accomodations.

My brain is about to explode but let me say what I am thinking now and see if this makes sense:

Make reservations now for Jan/Feb 2002 with points from Sept 2001 (don't need to borrow as my vacation is within my use year). Then when it gets to October 2001 make my res for Sept 2002 with remaining points and bank any left overs for next year.

So in March 2002 I will make reservations for Jan/Feb 2003 and then in Oct 2002 I will make reservations for Sept 2003

and on and on and on until 2042!!

Everyone agree, boy I hope so

When planning points, just remember that you only need to have the points on the day that you will be in the room.

Whether you have points on the day that make the reservation does not matter.

I think she's got it!! Just remember that you make your reservation at the 11 month window, but the points are for when the trip is, not when the reservations are made. I know that seems strange at first, but you will get used to it. I make a chart to keep track of points and use years and when ressies have to be made and when points have to be banked etc. I can then refer to it easily.

By the way, Welcome Home!!!! :D

Yup! That's it :). You should be able to bank quite a few points from 2001 to 2002 (and so on and so on ...) because you are only taking one vacation on your 2001 points. Of course, you can always invite someone to join you and book at 2 bedroom in Jan/Feb ;).

BTW, if your September plans include you paying for a Disney resort, I would still consider canceling that and staying at a DVC resort on points.

Welcome Home!! I do have a question about your sept 2002 ressie.Since their use year is Sept, won't they have to bank those leftover 2001 points in order to use them for a sept 2002 ressie? (following the same rule that points are used when ressie occurs.)

I had put:

Make reservations now for Jan/Feb 2002 with points from Sept 2001 (don't need to borrow as my vacation is within my use year). Then when it gets to October 2001 make my res for Sept 2002 with remaining points and bank any left overs for next year.

and Robin had put:

Robin, I dont understand what you are mean because I am taking two vacations on my 2001 points I will use points for my Jan/Feb 2002 vacation and then points for my September 2002 vacation and then the same for next year....2002 points will be used for jan/feb 2003 and September 2003

In other words:

2001 300 points = Jan 2002 vactn & Sept 2002 vactn
2002 300 points = Jan 2002 vactn & Sept 2003 vactn
2003 300 points = Jan 2003 vactn & Sept 2003 vactn
..........
..........
2042 300 points = Jan 2043 vactn & Sept 2043 vactn

Does that make sense Robin? That means I would not have to bank points right?

That brings me to the other point:

kem330 put - Welcome Home!! I do have a question about your sept 2002 ressie. Since their use year is Sept, won't they have to bank those leftover 2001 points in order to use them for a sept 2002 ressie? (following the same rule that points are used when ressie occur.

OK then, if I make my reservation with 2001 points for Jan/feb 2002 and then September of 2002 (the same month when I will get 300 2002 points) do I have to bank the points used for my September 2002 vacation or is that OK

I know I am making this confusing. Any answers....Anybody??

Welcome Home! judging by the photo, you'll be able to really get your money's worth from dvc with such cute little ones. it really is magic when they are at those ages. enjoy!

I believe you will have to bank the sept 2001 points for use for sept 2002 vacation. Points expire 8/31 for your use year. Actually when you make your ressie for Sept, tell MS that you want to use points from 2001 and they'll bank them for you then. Otherwise they would pull them from your 2002 points. So Robin is correct when she says you have extra points, unless you bank them for the 2002 year, 2001 points have to be used by 8/31/02. Maybe you should use all points for 2001 and start your system for 2002 with your ressies for sept. Of course you could have 450 for 2002 and plan extra guests, an extra trip, whatever. I think your confusion comes from when use year starts and finishes, 9/1 - 8/31

Also it's early I know, but you list 2042 points use in 2043, DVC ends in Jan 2042, so not sure how they will close it out in regard to points and when you have to use them by.

Ok, let's say you make reservations for Jan2002 this week and the total points used is 125. On Sept. 2001 you receive your yearly allotment of 300 points. Subtract the 125 you'll be using in January and you have 175 remaining. Those 175 points need to be banked if you don't intend to use them by Aug. 30th 2002.

Even if you already made the reservation for your Sept. 2002 vacation you would still need to bank those 175 points. Otherwise when Aug. 30th rolls around they'll expire.
