Ok, I have a question. For the first time I had to file in PA and NY. I live in NY. So I used the H&R Block software. Blah. But anyway. I owe NY $45. A voucher printed out to send in to NYS and the amount on the voucher was $812. What is the voucher?? I ended up just having the $45 paid electronically from my checking so I am guessing I don't have to do anything with the voucher? Can anyone help me out?

The instructions page that prints out from the H&R Block software states on it what you need to mail and where. Check that.

i dont use H & R so im not sure what you mean by vouchers, but i live in NJ and work in NY. i always get refunded from NY and owe NJ. The first year I worked half the year in one state, half in the other. That year I ended up owing NJ way more than I got back from NY. so it sounds like you may owe more to one state than you get refunded from the other.

When you e-file, but owe money, the software will print out a slip to include with your check. That way, you can e-file now, but wait until the deadline to actually pay. I imagine that's what the voucher is for.

Now, why it lists a different amount than you're supposed to pay; I don't know. Is the $812 the total amount you owe, but maybe you had $767 withheld from your pay, so you owe a difference of $45?

In my experience (going by memory though from last year and earlier), the voucher shows the amount you're supposed to write the check for. I didn't understand the two amounts stated by the OP or how that was related to owing tax in two states. I don't ever recall there being much on the voucher other than some identifying info. It didn't contain all your tax details like total amount owed, amount withheld, etc.

Did your software purchase include online or telephone support? This is a time to use it.

My guess is that the $45 is the fee for second state prep (usually only one state included with software), and the larger amount is what you owe the state.

Agree on both counts. That is just about the amount for state filing! You are smart. I don't think the OP will be happy if they owe that bigger amount.

The $45 is not the cost of filing in the second state. That was ~$36. I only made ~$16,000 in the state I don't live in. The software program told me that I owe NYS $45 and set up an electronic draft to submit the payment. I'm thinking that the $800 on the voucher is the credit I got from PA that is applied to NY. idk I can't find a good source of information. I called the 800 number and the girl didn't know anything. She told me that since it was a NY form, I had to call them because it wasn't an H&R Block form. I had a few choice words along the lines of 'doesn't your company develop software to fill out NY forms? I would think you would know more about it.' Then I hung up. Probably not cool, but I knew more by googling than she did by reading whatever off the screen. I then sent an email off on how they need to train their employees better... :sad2: I'm not normally that rude, but taxes are not something that I take lightly.

I'm thinking that this is what is going on. Since I submitted payment electronically I don't actually need the voucher... Hopefully.

Is there a chance the extra voucher is for an estimated payment? I usually use turbo tax and whyen I have a state that I owe money to it automatically spits out estimated payment vouchers for the next year apparently in an effort to make sure you have paid in the required amount for next year.
