Fighting Seasickness?

I just returned from the 25 Oct to 1 Nov Western Caribbean cruise. I was feeling a little green around the gills at the beginning of the cruise. DH went down to the Health Center on Deck 1 and found free 25 mg packages of Sea Calm (meclizine HCl) outside the closed office (it was after hours) along with instructions for combating motion sickness. I was so happy the meds were available after hours (and free!) because they worked like a charm.

Pam

I was on that cruise as well. And also had problems the first night and the night before the intended visit to Grand Cayman (which, BTW, was cancelled due to rough seas). On previous cruises I have taken Bonine and it knocked me out - thus missing everything in the evening after dinner. This cruise I took nothing and got to the shows and clubs many evenings. Two nights I did not. A good trade-off.

I am glad to know that meds are available - but had I known, I would have been tempted to go against my no meds vow.

This thread has great information - thanks everyone!

Sorry you missed GC, did you go to Key West instead?

I just bought a box of the new gravol that is ginger dried root. All natural.
I am on some other meds and don't want to mix other rx into my system right now, but am prone to motion sickness. I am hoping these work!

If you look near the regular gravol, these are in a green and white box! I think I paid about $6 for a bottle of 20.

I get post-cruise land sickness. II've only gotten queasy on one cruise on the first day. I believe it was from not drinking enough water and not eating enough food. I ate some very yummy chicken noodle soup and had rolls for dinner. I had taken Bonine before dinner. Needless to say, things definitely calmed down by the time my guys were finished with their meal.

I still have yet to completely combat the land sickness issue. It's fine driving in a car, walking around or even riding roller coasters. Ask me to sit down and work at my computer or watch t.v. and it goes south from there. I'm going to try taking Bonine a bit earlier before disembarking and take it for 5 days afterwards instead of 3 days to see if it helps. It took me nearly a week to readjust from our 3 nighter. I was in an inside stateroom and truly wonder if that made it worse. We've always sailed in balconies previously. I might even get the wrist bands to see if it helps. If you folks with this problem have any other suggestions I'm all ears. ::yes::

Firstly I loved your statement

I agree that Water has a lot to do with it when you feel sick you cut down but you need it, its best little and often, but how do you not have enough food on a ship,:rotfl: (Joking )I know what you mean.

Going back on land after is an issue, as your brain has 'adjusted' to the sea, then as soon as its worked that out, your back on land and it compensates for that, a bit too much.

The best thing as ever is to give your brain as much information as possible, by looking at the sea and horizon, viewing where you are, your eyes and ears help your natural system absorb the information and react quicker.

 I know, I was drinking adult beverages instead of water and I only ate just a bit for lunch. Not the best decision to make and I normally try to eat well and drink water to stay hydrated. I started celebrating my 30th b-day a little too early. ;)

Your on vacation, you can do that!!!! But if you get seasick, be careful.

Couple of good tips as we have been through about 6 tropical storms and violent seas. (Our first cruise...not DCL, they weren't in existence yet...found the captain missing the Captain's dinner as HE was sea sick! Anyway...natural ginger is a great route to go...or simple ginger pills. Ginger ale is better than Sprite or 7UP because of the ginger! The other great tip is to make sure you keep apples in your room. First thing in the morning eat a bit of apple and either crackers and dry toast...the pectin in the apple should help keep your tummy settled.
I actually do better on a cruise, but have to take Dramamine on land every day. Guess I should simply move onto the ship!!! Such a wonderful dream!!!:)

hi, i thought i would share my findings. i usually take Dramamine Less Drowsy but i saw all the talk of Mezcaline (may not be spelled correctly) so i decided to look for places that sell it online. I found out that it's the active ingredient in most less drowsy motion sickness pills including the less drowsy Dramamine i am used to. CVS has their own brand but it has this as the active ingredient. The regular kind that causes drowsiness has another active ingredient that starts with a D, it's a long name.

Can anyone report back as to how motion sick they were on their trip? I would like to know if it was as bad as you expected or much better, plus any other details.

I'll be bringing my less drowsy cvs brand motion sick tablets. Maybe i will bring a bag of ginger candies.

I sure hope i dont get motion sickness, we have a cat 12 and i was planning on eating as much as possible! That would be torture to not feel well enough to eat all that awesome food!

Do the wrist bands really work? Are they worth buying? :upsidedow

Well my DD justs avoids lower decks, eats in our room, looks at the horizion and gets fresh air and rarely goes for mediciation, the only place she has was the mainland boats at Cozumel to PLAYA for TULUM where she used the wrist band as thoose boats are enclosed.

Hi all. Just got back and did use some of the suggestions on this thread. We had to change itineraries due to Paloma so I was stressing out big time. But the only "bad" night was the first and with the precautions I took, I was fine. I did use Bonine every night. It did not make me sleepy during the day. I also had ginger tablets with every meal and also drank ginger ale quite often. I did by the "sea bands" which I wore. I could even look at the water unlike my last trip. I know some things work well for some and not so well with others. Just give thm a try. Good luck

that is great news, i'll get all three things like you did. did you wear the bracelts the whole time? did they have ginger ale as a beverage choice everywhere? thanks

I did wear the sea bands when we were at sea. Took them off to bathe and swim. They only had ginger ale at dinner but they could get it for you thru the bar. They did not have it at the beverage station. Not sure what really worked for me but it is worth buying the sea bands-just in case. good luck

Glad it worked out for you.

We just got back and had some rough days at sea. I came prepared. We had an inside stateroom in the middle of the ship. I took Bonine every day as this did NOT have the drowsiness effect of Dramamine. I get nasty side effects from the patch so I cannot take it. If you are worried that in the past you have become ill despite taking some motion sickness pill then come prepared. I asked my doctor prior to going to give me some anti-nausea medication. She gave me Zofran and Phenergan. Zofran doesn't always work for me but Phenergan knocks me out. I used the Zofran once as soon as I started feeling nauseated and it worked great. I never got sick. The last day of another cruise I spent the entire day sick and feeling just awful. Better to bring your meds then to have to go to the ship's doctor.

Sorry the seas effected your trip, some good advice here, but as posted before, I always encourage, the natural remedies such as fresh air, looking at the horizon as much as possible, eat not fatty stuff, drink water etc,
