Fifth Disease....

I'm not sure it is ... But it's not just a passing touch. You can watch the little kids use the palm of their hands to wipe their noses and then use that same hand to smear every inch of the honey wall that they can reach in hopes of uncovering the hidden characters. It's just a huge Petri dish.

It's not. It's just a great reminder.
Ah, ok. I sort of look at all of Disney as a Petri dish. Thankfully, I'm not bothered by such things but we have iron clad immunities in my house.

OP, sorry you all are feeling bad, it stinks! My DS came down with it last year, and never showed any signs other than the rash. And not on his face, all over his chest and back, down his legs to the knee. It wasn't too bad, slightly itchy but, oatmeal baths helped. We used Aveeno soothing bath treatments, they were really great!

How is it any more dirty than all other surfaces at Disney?

It probably isn't, but to see all these little kids smearing their hands over the display at once is kind of gross. As they move through the line, they are then replaced by more kids rubbing and smearing their hands all over the screen. I saw kids press their face up to it to make an impression on the screen, and more than one kid lick it to see the colors run together. I also saw an older kid sneeze into his hand then smear it over the screen.

It's different to see people touch railings, or ride bars. This is more than touching a surface, it's running your hand back and forth over the screen followed by more people doing the same. I always break out the sanitizer once we pass it!

Same, here. Germs rarely bug me, and I don't own any hand sanitzier.

That is wonderful for you both! Unfortunately we have compromised immune systems in our household so we are extra diligent, probably why I notice things like that!

Oh, I had it when I was 7 and it SUCKED! I am so sorry and I hope you feel better soon.

to OP from what we learned as daycare workers you were most likely exposed just before you left for Disney and you guys exposed others there but did not know as you were exposing others before the rash appeared. when rash appears you are over exposing others. parents were very upset when we would allow kids back with the rash but the doctors said they were fine to come back with the rash as the damage to others was over when rash appeared.

Like with many diseases, there's no clear time for when this family was infected or who infected whom (not sure that is correct grammar) or who they could have infected while they were at Disney World. It's also not clear if washing hands in soap and water throughout the day would be enough to control a potential infection. And that goes for all regular diseases, including the common cold. Washing hands helps but when? How many times a day? Do those anti-fugal liquids help or not? Too many questions and no clear answers.

OP hope you are feeling better.
Germs are everywhere, the more exposed the more your immune to them (unless you have a week immunity).
I am the opposite, I worry about my kids getting sick before vacation then during vacation.

Hubs came home with something... I don't think it's Fifths because there's no rash or joint pain, but he does have a low grade fever (was higher yesterday, but has come down a bit today), no energy (probably from the fever), stuffy nose, and slight sore throat. Hoping he gets better soon, and hoping the OP does too! Stay healthy, everyone!

My eldest DD had it at 9 months - only signs were fever and rash, fortunately for her it sounds like!
My third DD got stomach flu WDW last fall - poor thing was sick entire flight home, then Middle DD and I got it too. Ugh! At least we made it through the trip.
Feel better!

It is incredibly dangerous for pregnant women!....As others have said, once you see the "slapped appearance" on the face, you are nearing the end, but like everywhere, remember to practice good hygiene, and if you are exhausted, rest, so your body can handle the germ load!

Fifth Disease is a parvovirus. The incubation is long so it was probably prior to the trip. Also its common in schools and daycares. But please if you're around pregnant women...well don't be. I was working at a school while pregnant with my twins, and the preschool teacher across the hall came running in telling me there's been fifth disease noted in several students and I should get tested for immunity. I told her not to worry that I had told my OB about where I work during my first visit and she had me tested for immunity, and I was (must've had it during childhood). It can affect the unborn badly. The good news is your daughter now has immunity to it for her future.

A couple years ago I caught the flu at WDW and was up sick all night and had to sit most of our MK day out... it was the worst! Now I sanitize and wash my hands even when I get too close to people...can never be too cautious I guess! :flower:
