I would like to apologize to the thread for my sour like attitude in regards to the USMNT/Wales result. As many know on the Disboards, my favorite sport is soccer and I’m passionate about the national team. I do think all the teams in our group have quality and have earned the right properly to complete in the tournament. It hurts though to see the US underperform though. Americans like winners in whatever the sport and if we don’t succeed in this tournament (round of 16/quarter finals) I feel the media and public will continue to treat the team and soccer fans in this country as a joke. Which frankly does hurt. If you are a soccer fan and you try to call into your local radio sports station to talk about the local MLS/ USL (unless that station broadcasts the games) you mostly get ignored. I not saying I expect the media to cover soccer over the other big four sports but some respectful coverage other than the World Cup would be nice. My fear is that if the USA flops out of the WC, almost no one who is a non die hard soccer fan will pay attention to MLS, the Concacaf Gold Cup, the Concacaf Nations League, or the Leagues Cup next year in Spring/Summer 2023. I mean how many on this board, unless you actually read my threads, know that MLS is going to be a primarily Apple plus product starting in February? How many who are enjoying the WC will give MLS/USL a chance next season if you don’t already watch your local team (not criticizing, only trying to make a point)? For many years, if you enjoyed the sport, you were looked at as weird and often made fun of. I know times are changing and the respect for the game is getting better in some areas but often wonder how more fans would the USA (or Canada for that matter) if the men won the WC. How many would celebrate for a day pretending to care and just ignore it for another 4 years? I know some on this board would say who cares if they only tune in every 4 years but I do think it makes a difference to a point in our country. @londontime , I don’t view MLS as a retirement league. We have a salary cap and sustainability that most poorer clubs in Europe would be thankful for and not fear financial ruin. We have little chance of a team folding and have great training facilities that are as good as PL teams facilities. I know most of the world loves the benefits of promotion and relegation but eventually without a spending cap, that system will eventually fail. The top teams only really have a chance and smaller teams overspend just to compete and that can lead to a financial ruin situation. Without MLS we would not have the strong team we have. The academy system we have built and continue to build will be the key to successfully compete with the European leagues within the decade. We are permanently closing the gap and even the MLS commissioner has said European leagues look at what has been successful in our league to see if they can duplicate it there. Does that sound like a retirement league anymore? My favorite team NYCFC could seriously beat Aston Villa on any given day. The salary gap does not automatically mean there is a talent gap and frankly I laugh at Europeans that criticize the league without even watching a quality match. So in some way I want to beat England and Iran so badly that those nations start to look at MLS (where outbreaks European players started before being transferred to Euro leagues) in a more positive light and with the respect that it is owed.

Why does Qatar need 8 stadiums for this?

At most 4 games occur each day, and those can be accommodated by 2 fields matinee/evening.

I suppose practice fields are necessary but in a stadium?

FIFA requires a certain amount, I’m fairly certain it was 8-12 stadiums.

The 2026 bid required 16.

This. Normally a World Cup is spread across a country. This time it’s not for controversial reasons. Environmentalists are currently arguing about this with FIFA and IOC.

In other words, FIFA requires a host country to pad their already overstuffed pockets?

Qatar is the size of Connecticut. No need for so many facilities.

The US, Canada, and Mexico already have an over abundance of suitable stadiums to handle the expanded tournament in 2026.

These Qatari stadiums will mostly be white elephants, just like half of the Brazilian ones became. Probably the same in Russia, South Africa, and other former hosts.

I did hear that two or three Qatari stadiums are temporary and the seats will be shipped to various developing countries.

The rich owners who the own the PL teams might pressure the Wales and England FA (this stuff has happened in the WC before unfortunately).

You clearly do not know your English history.

The overall amount of games and the quality of the field (especially getting toward the end of the tournament) are probably issues. Having a lot of high intensity games in a short time would quickly deteriorate the fields. There are a total of 64 matches. So 8 matches for each stadium? Spread out over a couple weeks? The field quality should still be good by the end.

This is just a guess.

FWIW, I’m a transportation engineer, and when the Super Bowl was at MetLife Stadium there were all sorts of logistics that would not easily lend itself to having more than 1 game a day there. There are just too many people between the teams, media, and fans. Throw in tailgating, and forget it, one game a day is all you could feasibly schedule.

But that’s still only 4 stadiums required.

France is beating Australia 4-1 right now. At least some sanity in the association football world still exists.

How about not posting results in the thread until all of us had a chance to watch the game?

How long after a game should he wait to post results? I assume you're dodging social media and websites that report the scores. I suggest dodging this thread until you watch a game if you don't want to know the score.
