Fewer smoking areas in Magic Kingdom

I only doubt they'd ever go smoke-free because...can you imagine how often castmembers (those who smoke) probably need a smoke break after dealing with awful tourists?

I don't even smoke, but I think I'd light up every half hour if I worked there. And it might not even be just tobacco.

This sounds like the justification a lot of parents have for letting their children urinate in the bushes while in the parks. "The bathrooms are so far away, it is very inconvenient get to a DUA (designated urination area, aka restroom) and therefore out of frustration I'll just let my kid pee in the flower planter."

I don't see similar sympathy for alcoholics who are sneaking swigs out of flasks while in line for Space Mountain because they don't want to go all the way to BOG to get a drink. Addiction is not an excuse for a refusal to just walk over to the designated addiction area. If someone is so desperate for a cigarette that they cannot even plan ahead to make it to the smoking area, they probably should be seeking in-patient treatment rather than exhaling smoke all over guests who don't want to inhale their disgusting stench.

Using the map linked on page two, I count eleven restrooms spread somewhat evenly throughout the MK. That's in addition to the restrooms in each restaurant - so, at least six - and first aid and the baby care center. That's twenty. Versus four designated smoking areas .

And according to this article http://www.addictionrecoveryguide.org/treatment/nicotine/treatment_centers there are four inpatient nicotine addiction programs in the entire country. If people are truly exhaling their "disgusting stench all over" - seriously? no hyperbole there? - maybe nonsmokers should request more DSA's. Then stay away from them.

I think if they could do one DSA in each area/land that would be perfect. And I'm talking about finding places out of the way. There use to be one in AK that was hidden seriously it took me forever to find it but it was perfect for non smokers as they probably never knew it was there. If they could put one spot strategically throughout each area/land but camoflouge them in a way that than everyone could be happy.

My husband and I both smoke. I'm not proud of it, neither is he and we are taking small steps toward quitting. However, while we are at WDW our smoking is far less than if we are at home. The reasoning for this is that we ALWAYSALWAYS find a DSA (and I cant even fathom lighting up just anywhere) and they aren't that abundant in the parks. We are also very aware of those around us and I always thought the DSA by the castle was horrible just because it was such a bottleneck and there was no wide berth as there are at the other spots in MK where people could walk around. Even at the resort, we are mindful of people walking by, not blowing smoke in that direction, holding the cigarette farther away, etc and I always feel bad when families walk by. My husband even said last trip that he wished there were better spots for DSA's instead of on the main paths. I am thankful that we aren't completely ostracized when we visit and that we are given the spaces to partake in what I agree is a bad habit.

In all honesty, I do not think it is hyperbole to refer to the smell of cigarette smoke as a disgusting stench. I'm sure I'm not alone, or else the smoking areas wouldn't be shrinking.

Comparing the number of smoking areas to the number of bathrooms ignores a key bit of context: smokers are a small minority of WDW visitors, whereas every single WDW visitor is a potential bathroom user. By your count (which I assume is accurate) the number of smoking areas equals 20% of the number of restrooms. According to the CDC, 18% of Americans are smokers. Those two numbers are a pretty amazing match in my opinion.

While it is true that bathrooms are more convenient than smoking areas, I'm not sure society owes it to smokers to make it convenient to feed their addiction. I am sure Disney doesn't owe smokers anything.

The state of matter... well, matters. If we're talking about something like propylene glycol... when ingested via a food product, it's harmless & easily metabolized. When inhaled, it can (and does) irritate the respiratory tract of some individuals, particularly small children or those with conditions such as asthma, allergies, COPD, etc.

Additionally, if subjected to conditions of high heat (such as those that can be found in an e-cig that fails to work properly), it can become formaldehyde - and inhalation of formaldehyde is absolutely harmful to everyone.
