Fewer Norwegian Fjord sailings 2018?

we are hoping to book a cruise in 2019 for a Norwegian Fjord itinerary. It seems theres basically only 1 7 day option in 2018 and that starts after my kids school begins. It looks like this yr in 2017 there were more offerings. Just curious if anyone knows why it seems fewer are offered for 2018 and if it may be the same for 2019?

There is only one in 2018? That's surprising. We went on the June 4th 7 day Norwegian Fjord cruise out of Copenhagen and it was wonderful. I'm glad we went in 2017, because the late August 2018 date would not have worked for us.

I'm not sure but I remember when we were on the one in June this year people were talking about the new restrictions coming for older cruise ships in the arctic & northern regions. http://www.newsinenglish.no/2017/07/02/cruiseships-face-fjord-restrictions/ Maybe that has something to do with it...? Or maybe they were just not as popular as Disney liked? I was REALLY bummed we missed out on Geiranger on our cruise. Someone rumored that the only reason Disney was even invited there was due to Commodore Tom being Norwegian (makes a funny anecdote but Im not sure its true or anything).

With the new ships being LNG fueled this should be a temporary problem. Probably a good indicator of where the new ships might be heading is where there are emissions restrictions for cruise ships.

There is the one you mentioned, but also the 10night one in August that also goes to Iceland (so it does go to fewer ports in Norway) but just letting you know there are technically 2 that go to Norway next summer.

The omission of Geiranger is one of the main reasons we are yet to book a Norway cruise, though I would love to see the fjords.

I was REALLY bummed we missed out on Geiranger on our cruise. Someone rumored that the only reason Disney was even invited there was due to Commodore Tom being Norwegian (makes a funny anecdote but Im not sure its true or anything).

We were on the same cruise and were disappointed as well about missing Geiranger, but safety first. I don't think Commodore Tom was our captain, I think our captain was from Italy.

Definitely wasn't Commodore Tom for us, but I believe he was onboard the first year they went - at least some trip reports had said he made announcements. Regardless I heard the reason Disney was invited was due to him, but again, just a rumor.

I agree safety is paramount, but I am still bummed the winds were so high we missed it. Especially since the other tendering ships made it there...

For what it's worth, there are actually 2 7 day Norwegian fjords cruises in 2018 (one from Dover and one from Copenhagen). I had considered booking one of them this year, but was disappointed that Gerainger wasn't included (plus I only wanted to sail out of Copenhagen). Both sailing were in August, so probably doesn't help as far as a pre-school trip option if you are in one of the states that goes back in August.

Instead, I booked an ABD and a trip to WDW. So I really taught Disney a lesson. If they don't give us better cruise options, then I'm going to spend my money elsewhere in the Disney company.

That makes sense that Commodore Tom was there on the first voyages to Norway.

I'm not one to second guess DCL, on ship and passenger safety, but it was disappointing not to be able to dock in Geiranger. However, the sail through the Geiranger fjords was breathtaking! I hope you enjoyed your cruise!
