What time should we leave the ship in order to get the 9am ferry from Red Hook to St. John?!

Depending on when you get there, you may not be able to make that one.. But never fear! They have ferries every 30 minutes last time I knew.

You're right according to this. I guess I was referring to the CAR ferry. That is what we took when we were in St. Thomas. We rented a car and took that ferry, and THOSE run every 30 minutes. Check the link, and it gives you times and places of different ferries.

It is about a half hour car ride from the cruise dock to the Red Hook ferry, but that might not be necessary. There is a ferry that leaves right from Charlotte Amalie close to the cruise terminal. This one might be more convient. Here is the schedule for both ferries:

BETWEEN RED HOOK, St. Thomas and CRUZ BAY, St. John
Transportation Services (340) 776-6282
$3 one way, children under 12 $1, Seniors $1.25 15 to 20 minute ride Daily
Leaving Red Hook 6:30 am and 7:30 am - Then hourly 8 am to midnight
Leaving Cruz Bay Hourly 6 am to 11 PM

BETWEEN CHARLOTTE AMALIE WATERFRONT, St. Thomas and CRUZ BAY, St. John

$7 one way, children under 12 $3, Seniors $5 45 minute ride - Daily

Keep in mind though, if you're trying to save TIME, the 45 minute ferry won't waste any more time than driving 30 minutes THEN getting on a shorter ferry, I guess that goes for saving $$$, too. Because you'll have to pay one way or the other to get to Red Hook. Now, if you just don't want to be on a 45 minute ferry due to not liking the ferry itself, then I see your point. Take the shorter ferry if that's the case. But let me tell you our "funny" experience though. Personally, our CAR ferry was at FIRST, a SCARY experience. The boat they loaded us onto, was a rustbucket and we wondered if we'd SINK But, once we got going, we found it was actually a peaceful pleasant ride. We do realized if we'd of sank or had trouble, WE'D have been in trouble, too. They had a storage container type thing for lifevests, and from where we were, we could only count like 3 or 4. I guess the crew would have been saved. And my daughter, I made her WEAR hers. And we just prayed we'd get there safely and hoped the water was shallow enough to swim in without running into trouble if we had to swim in it. We look back and laugh about our adventure now, and I WOULD do it again.. Oh, by the way, the ferry we came back on was MUCH better. Had plenty if lifevests for everyone, and wasn't nearly as rusty...

Keep in mind, also, that you'll need to take a taxi to either ferry. The Charlotte Amalie to Cruz Bay ferry leaves from the downtown Charlotte Amalie waterfront... that's a $3/pp taxi ride from the dock. Since you'll need to take a taxi to either ferry, you might as well take it to Red Hook since the ferry from Red Hook to Cruz Bay is both shorter and more frequent.
