Marathon, Florida Keys checking in. Getting breezy and cloudy with lots of thunder. Nothing much yet but some bad bands are just offshore (according to radar)...We've shuttered and sandbagged and are hoping for a westward turn. Our house is 90 feet from the Atlantic (oh my).

I think you're a little nuts for staying in the Keys. Wasn't there a mandatory evac?

mandatory evac for tourists only. key west to 7 mile bridge is under hurricane warnings (no self respecting key wester ever leaves), 7 mile bridge to ocean reef under watch (we're 1/2 mile from the bridge in the watch area)...Leaving the Keys is nuts anytime but during an evac it's crazier. three bad accidents today. We won't stay if we shouldn't and this looks to be west of us...Let's hope the hurricane center gets it right!

Spoken like a true NON-KEYS person.

Mandatory evacuations from 7-mile bridge west, non-residents, mobile home residents, motor homes, and medical needs people.

Marathon is east of the 7-mile bridge.::yes::

As Peter Pirate said, no self respecting key wester leaves, unless it's a cat 5 and gonna score a direct hit... Then, we'll think about it.

The problem with the keys is, one road. As soon as everyone starts evacuating, they don't use good common sense and absolutley no courtesy, thus lots of little wrecks and a few major ones. Now you have a full road, blocked because of the wrecks, and no where to go. I'd rather be in my house than stuck in the road in a car/truck/van.

I'd still be in the keys, if I could afford it....

right o LizardCop...

Looking bad now folks. Lightening like I've never seen (almost daylight) and continuous thunder. We're now under a tornado warning. It's been spotted about 20 miles offshore (this concerns me)...We've all moved downstairs and continue hoping for the best.

Okay, I see now :D
Wishing you a safe night and tomorrow!

well ladies & gents, 10:38 p.m. and all is well here. It finished up pouring an hour ago. Went to the wal-mart and there were no batteries OR flashlights OR water to be found... Thank goodness for Publix :teeth: We're expecting it to get rough in the morning to noon-time roughly... IF it keeps following this path it's on...

Well if it stays on its current path, Broward won't get much in the way of wind..but they are worried about rain..most of FL is under a flood warning.

And hopefully Pirate Pete is okay...they just had on the update that the cell has disappaited some but the Tornado warning is still on. Stay safe Pirate Pete.

And safe wishes to you all on the FL west coast and Central FL (the bands are gonna be bad...the concern there is tornados).

HANG IN THERE PETER PIRATE! hOPING FOR THE BEST RIGHT ALONG WITH YA!:worried:

Charley is still at Cat 2 as of 11pm from National Hurricane Center

REPEATING THE 11 PM EDT POSITION...22.2 N... 82.4 W. MOVEMENT
TOWARD...NORTH-NORTHWEST NEAR 14 MPH. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED
WINDS...105 MPH. MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE... 975 MB.

Pressure continues to drop!!

I'm now under a Tropical Storm Watch

AT 11 PM EDT...0300Z...THE TROPICAL STORM WATCH HAS BEEN EXTENDED
SOUTHWARD ALONG THE FLORIDA EAST COAST FROM JUPITER INLET TO OCEAN
REEF...AND NORTHWARD ALONG THE GEORGIA AND SOUTH CAROLINA COASTS TO
SOUTH SANTEE RIVER. A TROPICAL STORM WATCH IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR
THE SOUTHEASTERN U. S. COAST FROM OCEAN REEF NORTHWARD TO SOUTH
SANTEE RIVER SOUTH CAROLINA.

Thanks guys...We lost power for a bit already and rain is coming in our ocean side downstairs doors (not much) but hopefully the shutters & sand will keep most out but driving rain is tough!

The cell hitting did indeed weaken but it is BIG! I hear the thunder on the gulf side of us now (meaning it's passed over).

Not sure how long our power will remain but I'll keep you posted.

In the Homestead-Cutler Ridge area and we are now under a watch.

Take care Pete

Not seeing much in the way of weather in Orlando right now. Was at Publix earlier, saw a lot of people buying bottled water, but there was still a lot of bottled water in the store.

(we already had water, but we bought a loaf of bread and some OJ, because we were out of them, not necessarily because we're terribly concerned with the weather)

We did move all the patio furniture inside though. (So far, that's the only major difference between hurricane prep here, and snowstorm prep back in MI)

Charley is suppose to go to a Cat 3 sometime during the night and have 120 miles winds when it hits the coast. I live on the right side of where its projected to hit which is the bad side to be on. Everything will be closed tomorrow.

Was wild in the stores today. They had a fight in one of the Walmarts today as some ladies were fighting over water.

Just looked up the current satellite image of the keys...Peter looks like you may still be in for it a bit. I know the image is up to an hour old, but yep, it's pretty big. I hope you do not have too much water damage, and all are safe.
Still calm on the Naples live web-cam...so odd to know what is coming!

Pam

Yep, it can be pretty quiet before it hits. Storm sucks up everything and it gets really quiet. Plus the animals and birds are get silent. It can be eerie.

Its 12:30 and we are now getting a band of high winds and rain. Yuck! This is a big storm. Hope our avocado tree doesn't lose all the avocados.
