Feel really bad..was I wrong in asking hairdresser this ?

I have a friend who lives about a 1.5 hours away, who like me, goes to an Aveda salon..she loves my color and was wondering if my girl would mind sharing her formulation. I sent my hairdresser a message on fb (since we are fb friends) and explained the situation..this is what she responded
Hey! I'm sorry and this may sound *****y, but I work too hard to give out my formulas to just anyone. I know people don't understand, but I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to offend, never had a hairdresser care before. Was I in the wrong, is it a top secret thing ?

I agree. It's kind of like asking a Chef for a recipe.

True..I do understand that and if my friend lived closer and could go to her..I would have never asked. I guess I just figured since my friend lived 1.5 hour away she wouldn't mind! I'll just send her an apology and explain

I wouldn't apology, I don't see anything wrong with you asking.

I suppose it can't hurt to ask, but I don't really blame the hairdresser for not giving out her "secret formula" either.

I don't know that much about hair coloring, but I would think that if you put the same formula on two different types of hair, you'd likely get different results. Unless your friend's hair is naturally quite similar to yours, I doubt you'd get the same result anyway.

You might have been better off if you'd asked your hairstylist to get in touch with her hairstylist (stylist to stylist) rather than asking her to give you the formula to pass along to your friend. She may well think you're trying to get it for yourself, so you can either take it to another stylist, or try to replicate it at home.

But, at any rate. You asked, she said no... and I think that should be the end of it. I would guess she's equally worried that she's going to lose a client over this as you are worried that she's been offended.

Once you find someone who you love who does your hair- it wouldn't matter if I could get it done somewhere else with the same "formula" (in my book) I couldn't go to them and expect the same result.

What if the OP got the formula and started doing her own hair. She is out money of the OP going there.

Why go to the salon if you have the formula and could do your own hair for much less.

OMG formulaa???? They use the same crap any other hair dresser uses. Number 5 so and so mixed with No 3 So So. It's not like she is some chemist and creating a formula to cure cancer. Give me a break. So no do not feel bad. She is the one who created the akwardness.

Eh - I don't know. I went to an Aveda salon in Texas when I lived there and when I moved my girl wrote out my formula so I could take it with me. I didn't even ask her, she just did it.

I don't think you were wrong to ask. You asked. She said no. End of story. I don't think there was anything inherently wrong by asking. I'm going to guess that your hairdresser didn't buy that you actually had a friend 1.5 hours away you were asking for.

It's not like she can walk into a beauty supplier and get this without being a beautician and showing her license.

I don't think it's a big deal that you asked; however, I understand why your hairdresser wouldn't share her formula. My guy has a recipe book with each of his customers and their respective formulas (and the variations they've tried) written down. I know he's very protective of this information.

I didn't just hand out my formula's. The only time I would is if someone was moving out of the area or with my snowbird clients-and with those I would talk with the hairdresser at the FL/AZ salon.

really, How do you know what to get? Usually they are mixed If you could buy them at a beauty supply store they would be no need to mix items LOL LOL

Because if she's using professional products no "Joe Schmoe" off the street has the product available to them. You have to have a license to get these products so you can't really just "do it yourself" I wouldn't think...

I certainly wouldn't be able to replicate what my hairdresser does...nor would I even attempt. It will end in disaster, guaranteed.

I understand what people are saying though...but it would depend on what your hairdresser is doing too. If it's just one all over color, maybe. But if you're talking highlights/lowlights, foils etc I wouldn't think anyone would try that at home even if they DID have the formula.

I think it would be wrong to ask if your friend lived in the same town, but since she lives too far away to become a customer, it was okay to ask. But it's also okay to say no.

But I'm with those who say it wouldn't have looked exactly the same on her hair anyway, unless her natural color just happens to be the same color as yours.

Thanks everyone! She just mainly uses one color to touch up the roots and every couple of times adds a few lowlights. I guess I didn't think much about it, because we've discussed it in the salon. I know she uses a 3/4 mix for root touch up, just wasn't sure about the low lights. My friend is going to take a picture of my hair and show it to her hairdresser, shouldnt be that hard to figure out or at least get close

Methinks you don't know as much about hair color as you think you do. If it were that easy to duplicate, the friend could just show her own hairdresser a picture of the OP and say "Here, I want this color." My own color is a custom mixture. I showed a picture my stylist and said "This is what color my hair was, nautrally, 10 years ago. I want this color back." And it took 3 or 4 tries to really get it exactly right.

Apples and oranges. Chefs sell their recipes or use them to promote themselves. The OP's hairdresser is being asked to give away something she came up with, but it will not promote her in any way.
