Feeding A Finicky 6YO While In Disney?

We're only 19 days out from our fifth trip to Disney and I'm contemplating what to feed my 6 year old finicky eater while we're there. He lives off of PB&J's and will occasionally eat something that's not white, brown, purple and somewhat soggy.

So here's the dilemma: I'm considering packing a stockpile of PB&J's (think Uncrustables) for his consumption while on vacation. Will I be on the receiving end of many an evil eye if I pull one of those puppies out to feed him while the rest of the family dines at a sitdown establishment? I loathe the thought of wasting $5-10 on something he won't even touch much less consume but then again I don't want to be "one of those people".

Any experience? Advice? Help?

Mom2R&D, of course there are going to be people that are going to give you an odd look, but I really wouldn't think much of it. If you're going to the world you're going to want to have a good time, and in order for that to happen do wahtever you need to. Don't worry about it. ;)

Some of the fast food places actually sell Uncrustables. You can find menus on Deb's site at http://www.wdwig.com.

Your son will probably be able to find something he likes at buffets. They have special kids' buffet lines with mac and cheese, pizze, etc.

I thought I read somewhere on the boards that most restaurants will make PB&J upon request (even if it's not on the menu).

Good luck and have a great trip!

Nancy

We didn't do too many "fancy" dinners when we went last year, but we did bring our own pbj's every day (in a sandwich taker so they wouldn't squish). Either DH or I would grab seats and the boys could start eating the sandwiches while the other got in line for the food. By the time the parent was back, the kids could have cookies/fruit and a drink while we ate and there was no fighting! My boys would eat pbj for breakfast/lunch or dinner every day and it just wasn't worth spending money getting them anything else. And at least I knew they were eating. The few "special" meals we did, I made sure they were buffets and that way they got to at least try a bite of a few new foods! I hope this wears off some day!

nearly all the restaurants sell PB&J, we saw them on menus all over the place

If your picky DS is like my picky DS, he won't eat "foreign" pbj (anything made without the bread he's used to) or any mac and cheese that isn't the standard boxed version. We are fortunate that his other meal standard, pizza, is available everywhere, but we do bring our own loaf of bread, jar of peanut butter, and jelly every time we go to WDW and make up a couple of sandwiches every day to take into the parks.

We never eat in the sit-down restaurants, though. If we did, however, I wouldn't hesitate to bring him a sandwich. You can order him a beverage and a dessert, maybe even a side of french fries, if you feel awkward about it.

moinab, your son sounds like mine. Sometimes I think he's actually too picky! :p But you're exactly right, I can order him a side dish and a beverage and probably be okay.

I just have this image of everyone staring at me thinking "They bring him to Disney World and won't buy him anything to eat!" :o

Thanks for everyone's advice, it's helped tremendously. :)

LOL!!! It's a real joy, isn't it? I majored in dietetics in college, and used to think, "if you just expose children to the proper foods when they are very young, they will learn to love them." HA!!! DS set me straight right away. I couldn't get him to eat more than a quarter of a baby spoon full of food until I weaned him, cold turkey, at 18 months. Thank God he eats oatmeal with bananas every morning, because the only other things he'll eat, as I mentioned, are pbj, pizza, and boxed mac and cheese. Of course, he'll eat any kind of cookie, cake, candy, or chip he can get his hands on

DD is just the opposite. She's 15 months, and will eat anything I put in front of her. Her favorite is black beans.

Don't worry about what other people might think. It's none of their business.

Have a great trip!

My DD ate pizza every day while we were there. I thought she was crazy, but at least she ate.

Yes! Mine wouldn't eat baby food either! I always tell my husband I don't know how he grows because he never eats anything. My oldest is like your youngest, he loves any and everything and never balks at anything you put in front of him. My youngest only wants PB&J's, gummy snacks and cheese crackers. Argh! My diet was terrible with my first (the healthy eater) but was stellar with the second (the picky eater). Go figure...you can't win! **LoL**

Needless to say, there will be a jar of peanut butter, a squeeze bottle of jelly and a loaf of bread in my suitcase! :crazy2:

I have a picky eater in my lot too. But as long as there is pizza, chicken nuggets and spaghetti, we're all set! LOL
