Feb 5th - 12th 2012 Mexican Riviera on the Disney Wonder

We are late dining with our 9 and 6 yo, and once again taking full advantage of the Dine&Ditch, oops, I mean Dine&Play program. :)

60 days? Didn't even notice, huh, cool. NOT. I am obsessively obsessing over the cruise all day. I have toned down my checking the Disney website for upgrades and price changes, but am still here ten times a day...

Brent, how did it go with Dine& Play before? I know what it is and hope to use it with our two girls. Were you able to keep the kids up long enough? Do you get them a snack in the late afternoon?

I don't recall ever making a specific food run to tide them over, they more or less grazed on pizza whenever they wanted, so holding them over until late dining was not an issue for us.

I think it really depends on the individual kids and their routines. We're pretty chaotic...DD is homeschooled, so she may have dinner at 5 tonight, DS and I are going to Cub Scouts, so he will be lucky to get McDonalds in the car by 8:30.. and tomorrow those times may be reversed. :/

On our first cruise we did main dining and would lose our DS during the late show, ending up carrying a sleeper back to the room. It was a bummer to know he missed all those great shows. Many other kids wouldn't think of falling asleep during the shows, though.

Second cruise was our test run for late dining and it worked very well for us. They stayed awake during for the early show. Keeping them awake until late seating was easy for us, given a stop at the gift store or a line for pictures usually awaited us after the show. Once seated, their food would arrive almost immediately. By the time we were getting into our main course, they were becoming restless and our heros in the yellow shirts would swoop in for the rescue.

We enjoyed more dinners as a couple on that cruise than we have since! We would check on the kids throughout the evening, but they always opted to stay in the club until closing, allowing us to enjoy some nightlife activities. Typically at club closing, our 6yo was asleep on a bean bag among some other sleepers, and our (then) 8yo was still bouncing off the walls with the rest of the ADHD crowd. :)

I hope this helps. Dine&Play is really great for us, but would be an outright disaster for my SIL who has her kids on a fixed routine...dinner at 8 would never work for them...Good luck!

Thanks Brent. I've wavered back and forth, wondering if I should try and waitlist for main dinner.

Our kids are far from used to having a routine, so we should be fine! Until Kindergarten started this fall, we used to let them both stay up until after 10pm, and some nights, they still do! They sometimes nap, sometimes don't.

I will stick with the late dinner, and sign them up for the Dine&Play. I will let them stay through the first Animator's night though...

Less than two months! WOOOO HOOOOOOO

I am going to start posting a quest for all of you once-a-day. Why, because all this sitting around is driving me nutso! 50+ days sounds like an eternity right now. Feel free to be superfluous in your answers. Today's question of the day! What time are you scheduled to arrive?

We are scheduled to arrive between 11:00-11:30. We live locally so we're going to be dropped off at the port. It sounds like there's some waiting around involved so we've purchased a Trunki for DD2 to sit on and to entertain herself with. She's fairly inquisitive though, so I'm hoping she won't have any trouble entertaining herself.

ok, it is officially saturday my time! and i'll be doing an installation all day tomorrow so i'm going to post the question of the day now:

What inspired you to book this cruise?

We live a pretty stressful life. Between our jobs and living with a mentally ill family member, we were discussing the possibility of taking a vaca. We were thinking about staying near home since our daughter is still on the younger side, and my husband is afraid of flying. Our top idea was driving to San Diego and going to Sea World, Wild Animal Park, SD Zoo, etc. However, our daughter hates riding in the car! And my husband knew I would want to do every last thing at the parks. Our ultimate goal was relaxation. A few days later, pop, in came an email from DCL advertising "kids sail free". I brought it up in passing and didn't think anything of it. Slowly all the reasons to go popped up 1) No driving 2) It really isn't that expensive 3) If we have another child soon, we probably won't be on another vacation for 2 years 4) DD loves swimming pools 5) DH and I love eating 6) Disney throws a party for the super bowl? Oh, we are so doing this! For the record, I don't like football, only DH does.

What inspired you to book this cruise?

I read this as I woke up and was trying to come up with a "why"

As I was sitting in my truck at 6:32am on a Saturday, trying to get it to stay running in 11 degree (F), so I could get back to work, the answer suddenly came to me.... ....... ...... :rotfl2:

First I'll answer yesterday's question. We are going to drive up from San Diego the day before and stay at the Vagabond in San Pedro. Hope to get over to the terminal as early as possible. I'm all about maximizing my money!

Second question: PRICE! The Kids sail free popped up, and it was crazy to say no. My wife is the frugal one in the family, but even she couldn't say no to the price. We've cruised a few other times, and I've checked the Carnival and Disney MR prices the last year or so. Carnival was always about this price, so when the Disney dropped to this price, it was an easy decision. We are passholders at Disneyland, so we all love all things Disney. I can't wait to watch my two girls enjoy this trip.

1 - We are usually one to try to get to the ship as soon as we can. However, this trip we are taking more of a relaxed approach! We will be spending the night before at the Grand Californian, and getting a ride to the port from a college friend that lives near DL. So, we plan to relax that morning, check out as late as they will let us. That will probably get us to the ship around noon.

2 - Why not! :thumbsup2 We are lucky to be able to vacation whenever we want, so we choose to sail when it's cheapest. We wanted to add DL to this trip and didnt want to deal with the Pres. weekend crowds. Timing on this cruise was best for saving DVC points and cruise cost. Plus Feb is both Valentine's Day and my birthday! What better gift then a cruise and DL?!?

I'm a few days behind on the questions. But I LOVE the idea, it will help time pass, and we'll get to know eachother a little better!!!

Okay here goes...

1) We are flying in early Saturday morning, and will probably do DL that day. Then we will drive over first thing on Sunday, probably be to the port right at opening time. 10 am I think. It's way boring at the San Pedro port in my opinion compared to Port Canaveral, I feel Disney could do this up a bit more. Anyways, I like to board the ship as early as possible, and get there early to check for upgrades. I'm always hoping they'll have the Walt Suite available and just offer to "give" it to me. Hasn't worked yet. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

2) We LOVE Disney Cruises, and usually take a vacation in Febuary. I was never all that excited for the Mexican Riviera cruise before, but then I got an email for 25% off published fares, looked up the prices, and thought, okay really, you can't beat that. So we went ahead and booked it. I'm SOOO excited, we've only ever done 3 night Disney Cruises, so excited to do a longer cruise!!!

Just think Christmas is right around the corner, then the cruise will almost be here!
:yay:

Hi everyone

Ok here are my answers.....

1- we are flying in from Calgary on the Friday so we can get a full day in Disney on the Saturday.
2- it is DS2 b-day and DS1 has had 3 birthdays in WDW and we thought it only fair that DS2 experienced Disney for his birthday so we decided to do a cruise and we get the Disney Magic and also a bit of Mexico thrown in.

I was trying to decide what to do for my kids for Christmas and was at a loss.We have too many toys and need family time without sports and rushing around!

Our DD will be 2.5 during the cruise and we have main dining. If you're looking for dinner mates, let us know!

Hi Everyone,

Sorry east coasters! I'm a little late, according to your time. I've been working since early morning yesterday. My company designs and produces special events. I've been up since 7 AM yesterday to install a mini NY for a party today. I was so tired, I had to crash before waking up to post this. Yes, I had to compulsively post this before midnight our time :-)

Question of the Day!
What's up with your disboard name?

For the most part, I tend to twitter, facebook, social media etc with my real name (and occasionally) with my company name. It doesn't exactly make sense to use my company name in this case, and I don't want to throw off SEO and search results by using those two. Since I had to come up with something new, well, I was just all out of creativity. DD's name is Sophie. I tried for SophiesMom, but that was taken. Everytime she puts on a dress, she twirls and asks, "Sophie princess?" so I'm PrincessSophiesMom. Backup name probably would be PatriotsFanWidow.

I love the whats up with your name question... I do often wonder where we all came up with them!!! Good one!

Okay, mine is much more boring. My maiden name is Hawkins, and back in school days, we used to shorten it up to Hawky, One of my very first screen names was hawky7, and it's easy and usually not taken since it comes with a number, so that is my story. Altough, most people who know me now without my maiden name are like I don't get your screen name. :)

Mine is boring as well.My name is Shannon ad people call me Shanie and my birthday is the 17th.

Does anyone on this thread have kids the same age as mine?Mine are 10,(girl)8 (girl)6 (boy).
So excited!!!!!!:woohoo:

I know we've all probably mentioned it at one point or another, but let's all do it at once now. I know Hawky7 gave us a great idea of possibly grouping up in dining groups based on similarity, this might help it along a bit.

Question of the Day: Monday, December 12th

Ages and Sex of those in your group? Maybe a little blurb about yourself too :-)

Linda (that's me), I'll be turning 26 on January 7th. I'll actually be celebrating on February 7 on the ship. We were going to try to sail in January, but both my hubby and I can't take time off from work then. I'm a special events designer with my own company based out of Orange County, CA. I am mommy to a 2 year old and DR APs.

Kevin (the hubby), is 29 and a software engineer. He's a Harvey Mudd college alum and loves board games. He's a huge football fan and is really looking forward to watching the game on embarkation day. Hubby is a Canadian born US citizen.

Sophie (the DD), will be 2.5 come cruise time. She's been a pretty good kid so far. Loves the movie Tangled and loves Fantasyland at Disneyland. She doesn't exactly have a favorite color, but loves to wear things she can twirl in (dresses in warm weather, and tutus with tights in cold). Truly a water baby and will probably be spotted at the pools quite a bit on this trip.

Let's see I'm a few questions behind.

1) we arrive on Saturday evening after a long day of travel from ottawa.

2) spur of the moment, late night impulse buy! I'd had a bad day at work the deal popped up and I couldn't resist!

3) dis board name that's easy.....I'm Danielle and I live in Ottawa!

4) we are me (danielle) and Stephan with Liam age 13 and Colin age 10. I grew up in bc and spent many a summers in the Los Angles area(competing in marching band events) but haven't been back in over 15 years, we play some volleyball, like to be outdoors and ski.

Counting down!!

The boys will be away at their dads for a week after Christmas so hopefully I'll get my FE stuff done!

Anyone want to share their per cruise hotel?

Thanks
Danielle

I'm, two questions behind...gotta pay better attention!

The name comes from my past life when I used to race cars, my favorite one was called M3, hence brentm3

Our party is me, Brent (39), wife Jackie (34 despite anything I may have previously reported...oops), daughter (9), and son (6)
