FBI Calling

For my job anyway (although I don't really work the public much) I just say that I work for a DoD contractor. It is possible that at some point people will be contacted for one of my security checks I had to give a ton of references to get it, but I'm not sure if they actually called many of them. However I know many of the higher levels of clearance and special projects will require you to take a polygraph and they will interview others.

I also know someone that went for a job like mine and because his mother was not a US citizen they had to interview her first so he could get the job.

For federal jobs, they also talk to people who you do not list as references. That's where the talking to neighbors comes in. Last week, someone came to the door asking about a man who lives on our block. We only had a vague idea of who he is (there are two houses of people we don't really know) so we recommended another neighbor that may have more info (they did).

As far as identifying themselves …. I asked my (FBI) DNiece this as well … she was hired back in 2010. One night on skype back when she was first hired she showed me her FBI ID.
I asked her about identifying herself and she said ALL FBI Agents have TWO ID's … their FBI one and then another ID that states they are employed by the GOVERNMENT.
DNiece uses the 'government' one all the time. She does not tell anyone (civilians) where or who she works for … just states 'the government'. Unless, of course she is on official FBI business.

I am pretty sure that I read recently that hackers are getting more sophisticated and can make it look like a call came from a certain number, even when it does not. The number the caller gave me to call was a similar, but not identical, number.

Well, now that I called the main number and left my info, I am sure they will call if they needed anything important.

I doubt it was a background check and I don't know anyone going for a job. My husband was a federal agent and he told me it was very suspcious of the message. The caller said, "Hi, this is Sean from the FBI." My husband said that if someone is calling you from the FBI, they will say, "This is Special Agent So-and-So" or at least leave a last name.

Anybody with a smart phone can do that.

You don't happen to have insurance with Farm Bureau, do you? I knew someone who worked there, and internally they often use the acronym FBI (Farm Bureau Insurance).

I can't imagine that someone who was doing a sales pitch would do that, but if you are a policyholder and someone was calling you, I can see how it might be possible to slip and use the acronym.

More than likely it's some kind of phishing expedition, but this one of the few legitimate possibilities that I could think of. I agree that no official staff of the US FBI would leave that informal a message.

I guess having two ID's makes sense given the nature of an agents job.
I asked my mother if she remembers what type of ID the investigators showed her when they were doing a background check on my son. She said it said either FBI or Federal investigator. I know we got phone calls asking if everything was ok because federal investigators were asking questions about my son :lmao. Even the principle of the high school he graduated from called to say that she had federal investigators in her office asking questions, and they wanted to speak to some of his former teachers. She wouldn't let them until she spoke to me. Needless to say she was relieved when I told her the reason they were there.

Does anyone know if he will need another background check every 5 years if he stays in the army?
