Favorite Depressing Songs

She comes down from Yellow Mountain
On a dark, flat land she rides
On a pony she named Wildfire
With a whirlwind by her side
On a cold Nebraska night

Oh, they say she died one winter
When there came a killing frost
And the pony she named Wildfire
Busted down its stall
In a blizzard he was lost

She ran calling Wildfire

By the dark of the moon I planted
But there came an early snow
There's been a hoot-owl howling by my window now
For six nights in a row
She's coming for me, I know
And on Wildfire we're both gonna go

We'll be riding Wildfire

On Wildfire we're gonna ride
Gonna leave sodbustin' behind
Get these hard times right on out of our minds
Riding Wildfire

I don't know who sings it, but it is a song from the seventies
"Alone again, Naturally". Someone help me out here!

Oh, I cry at a lot of these. :( Wildfire still gets me.

Fire and Rain.. James Taylor (I have read accounts that due to the circumstances of this song, James Taylor was put in a mental institution... how true it is, I'm not sure...)

I don't know if he spent any time in a mental health facility or not, but he wrote the song after the suicide of a friend (Susanne).

YIKES...this thread about depressing songs is depressing ;)

I know the story of Susanne is true.. but is his time at McLean hospital true.. or one of urban legend? I heard that it was Susanne was on a plane to his concerts... can a avid JT fan help us out?

I'm trying to find out if that is true or not...

Personally, I must be a strange one... think of how the outlet of lyrics is.. how the hurt, the pain, is out.. and how others identify with your art/your creation... I don't see that as depressing...

Shannon (about a dog that died), Vincent (very sad), actually there are several sad songs I love that put me in a melancholy mood. If I'm very sad, I tend to sing Elvis and Hank Williams Sr songs, sometimes a little bit of Patsy Cline.;) I don't normally like that kind of music.

I absolutely love "Alone Again, Naturally" by Gilbert O'Sullivan
For you AspiringCindy:

Alone Again, Naturally

(Gilbert O'Sullivan)

In a little while from now,
If I'm not feeling any less sour.
I promised myself, to treat myself,
And visit a nearby tower ..........
And climbing to the top,
Would throw myself off,
In an effort to, make clear to whoever,
What it's like when your shattered .......
Left standing in a lurch,
In a church with people saying .....
My God, that's tough, she stood him up,
No point in us remaining .......
I may as well go home,
As I did on my own,
Alone again, naturally.

To think that only yesterday,
I was cheerful, bright and gay.
Looking forward to, and who wouldn’t do,
The role I was about to play.
But as if to knock me down,
Reality came around,
And without so much as a mere touch,
Cut me into little pieces.
Leaving me to doubt, all about God and His mercy,
Oh, if He really does exist,
Why did He desert me?
And in my hour of need,
I truely am, indeed,
Alone again, naturally.

It seems to me that there are more hearts,
Broken in the world that can’t be mended,
Left unattended, what do we do?
What do we do?

Now looking back over the years,
And whatever else that appears.
I remember I cried when my father died,
Never wishing to hide the tears.
At sixty-five years old,
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn’t understand why the only man,
She had ever loved had been taken.
Leaving her to start, with a heart so badly broken,
Despite encouragement from me,
No words were ever spoken.
And when she passed away,
I cried and cried all day,
Alone again, naturally .....
Alone again ................................. naturally.

Gloom, despair, and agony on me! (WOE!)

Deep, dark depression, excessive misery! (WOE!)

If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all. (WOE!)

Gloom, despair, and agony on me!

Please take the music off.. its distracting to hear elevator music... on a very serious subject...

Thanks everyone for your replies. I think it is the songwriter in me that loves a pensive song. Here are a few lines from a great Bruce Springsteen song:

Woke up this morning my house was cold
Checked out the furnace she wasn't burnin'
Went out and hopped in my old Ford
Hit the engine but she ain't turnin'
We've given each other some hard lessons lately
But we ain't learnin'
We're the same sad story that's a fact
One step up and two steps back

It's the same thing night on night
Who's wrong baby who's right
Another fight and I slam the door on
Another battle in our dirty little war
When I look at myself I don't see
The man I wanted to be
Somewhere along the line I slipped off track
I'm caught movin' one step up and two steps back

OK Cindy B - just for that I am going to follow you around and put elevator music on all your threads. :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc

Hey! I enjoyed it! It's Cindy B you want to follow around!!!! Well, you can follow me around with elevator music, I don't care, but could you change the song to a Springstein or Jackson Browne song? :p

My theory is, one man's elevator music is another man's depressing song. Live and let live! :p

Oops - sorry Saffron ;) ;) I got the wrong person with that post.

Concrete Angel by Martina McBride (sp) I broke out in tears when i saw the video!!!:( :D

i cann't believe no one mentioned danny boy -
Ah Danny boy, the pipes,
the pipes are calling
From glen to glen,
and down the mountain side

The summer's gone,
and all the flowers are falling
'Tis you, 'tis you
must go and I must bide

But come ye back
when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed
and white with snow

And I'll be here
in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy,
I love you so

But if you come,
and all the flowers are falling
And I am dead,
as dead I may well be

You'll come and find
the place where I am lying
And kneel and say
an "Ave" there for me

And I will hear,
though soft your tread above me
And o'er my grave
will warmer sweeter be

And you will bend
and tell me that you love me
And I will sleep
in peace until you come to me

But if I live
and should you die for Ireland
Let not your dying thoughts
be just of me

But say a prayer to God
for our dearest Island
I know He'll hear
and help to set her free

And I will take your pike
and place my dearest
And strike a blow,
though weak the blow may be

Twill help the cause
to which your heart was nearest
Oh Danny Boy, Oh, Danny boy
I love you so.

The "oldie" Diane couldn't think the name of was "Last Kiss" by J. Frank Wilson and The Cavaliers. This is my favorite sad song, also. "Abraham, Martin and John" by Dion, is another sad song I like.

I always have to see....

Off the top of my head...

"her green plastic watering can
for her fake chinese rubberplant..."

-Fake Plastic Trees, Radiohead
