Fat Girls Walking Club

Hey i'm glad your interview went so well ChocoKat!!

Magix, hang in there! Hopefully your knees will continue to feel great! If not the dr. will help figure everything out!

I went out on a walk this morning and it was good! I did it in about 5 minutes less than I normally do!

I'm not too sure how I like walking in the morning though becuase I was sore most of the day today!

I probably won't be able to get back out until Firday :-( but maybe I'll be able to sneak somthing in at work on wed!

ChocoKat, glad all went well for you.
Magix, hoping your knees continue to improve.
Nkkilala, happy to hear your walking went well and maybe you can squeek in some more.
I've been continuing my walks and my time is pretty much consistent. I have been adding in a bit of a run to push my time a bit. Hopefully, I can just get a few minutes shaved off so that my 5k time is acceptable.
Hoping to try that Wii fit but haven't had the time to get to my daughter's yet. Still pushing for that TM for Christmas.

I went out last night and had one of the best workouts!!

I changed up my routine a bit. Instead of doing the planned workout i've been doing I created my own.

It was great!

I think what helped the most was I let myself just walk the first mile!

After that I did various walk/run combos!

I was having so much fun that I didn't even notice it getting dark! By the time I realised I had lost my sunlight I was 2 milesaway from home!

I ended up calling my hubby to pick me up becuase it was so dark and the last mile home does not have streetlights!

I must say it was the most fun I've had running!

Wow! That's impressive, Nikki! I don't think I could ever have so much fun running that I didn't realize it was getting dark. Way to go!!

So today was supposed to be my first 5K. However, I got called into work for one of our college girls who needed to go home this weekend (I knew it on Monday so no bit deal)

I spent my time at work (Physical Therapy clinic that is only open for gym memebrs on Sat) running a 5k on the treadmill!!

I didn't do as well as earlier in the week but I blame it on being on the treadmill.

I did the 5K in 53minutes with various run/walk session!

Its not the best time and is not under the 15min mile requirement for the Princess 5K but I DID IT!!!

Congrats Nikki!! I'm impressed!

So, my knees are feeling much, much better now. I was even able to ride my bicycle at the racetrack last weekend, including riding a short distance on an incline with a VERY strong headwind. So, that's good. I had to jog about 5 steps to rush arm restraints to a friend in his car on the grid as his session started (can't go out on track without them), which didn't feel particularly good to do, but didn't make my knees hurt afterward, either. Granted it was only a few steps.

Picked up a copy of my x-rays today for Thursday's appointment. Says the left knee shows a "slight effusion" of the "suprapatellar soft tissue recess". Whatever that means. I really doubt that any kind of surgery will be recommended now that things are feeling better. I'll probably just have to get some physical therapy exercises for it. We'll see soon, though.

I'm still trying to figure out what to do about the WDW race. Hopefully, after Thursday's appointment, I'll better know where I stand and what I'll be able to do.

Had my orthopedic surgeon appointment today for my knees. He checked them out, asked some questions, and said I wouldn't need any surgery, nor did they warrant checking inside with an MRI. That's what I figured, since they've been getting better finally. He said it wasn't any kind of serious tear and was just mostly compression of the patellar area, which is common to women. He did advise against any running, though. If I try it, it will likely agitate the area and I'll be right back where I was when this pain started. He said I should take up a sport with wheels. He meant bicycling, but I'd like to think he meant that my Dad should buy me a racecar.

Anyway, he said they should be healed up in another month or two. He didn't even advise going to physical therapy and felt that my trainer at the gym would do the trick. So, I guess I'll try to quick walk my first 5K on Thanksgiving Day and see what kind of time I get. If I think I can make the pacing requirement for the WDW 5K, then I'll work toward quick walking that one, too. I can definitely walk my third one in February. If I don't do the WDW race, I still get the t-shirt, so that's something. I'll be sorry to miss out on the finisher's medal, but oh well. I made the effort and I did the best I could. I'm just not meant to run. Such is life.

Great Job :cheer2:

No surgery! That is a good thing :)

Magix,

I'm sorry to hear running is out but at least it isn't anything worse!

I did a bit of running on Thursday and made good time! I did 2.6miles in 27 minutes!

I hope to get out tomorrow if isn't snowing!!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Hello ladies!
I am back from my week vacay, had a stop over for Disney for 3 days Yay! I had a blast, but didn't get to do much of any exercise, was sick as a dog with the flu for half the trip and recovering for the other.

Still, once I got back into town I had to speed walk a 5K for charity at work today. I am happy to report that I walked the whole course at a steady pace, on my own, and clocked it in at 49:57, which is none too shabby taking into account I hadn't had any real training for at least 2 weeks prior. :cool1:

I am now signing up for the local 5K turkey trot and the 5K Jingle Bell run.

Also in other news, I just got a brand new spanking job! :woohoo:

Congrats on the new job, ChocoKat!! Glad to hear you had such a quick pace in your 5K. I'm doing my first on Thanksgiving morning and I haven't done a lick of exercise in 5 weeks, initially because of my knees, but now because I'm lazy (going back this weekend, I swear!!). It'll be interesting to see what kind of speed I can walk.

Congratulations ChocoKat on that new job. Best of luck to you.
Magix, hope your knees keep improving.
Nikki, glad to hear of your progress too.
I have been improving on my pace and hope to keep it up through this cold weather we are having here. Still pushing for a TM for Christmas to help on those bitter cold days to come.
Take care all.

FINALLY went back to the gym this weekend for my 40 minute swim. Everything went well, although I'm a bit sore, which is to be expected after taking 5 weeks off. I plan to go again tonight, just to do some cardio.

My first 5K is this Thursday morning. My friend has still been training to run the whole thing, but I'll be walking. I'm going to do it as quickly as I can, so I know how far I have to go to be able to hit the WDW 5K pacing requirement (if I can).

So, my 5K friend is setting herself up to flake on the event, particularly if it rains. Whatever.

I did a mile on the treadmill while at the gym Monday in 17:00. I'm giving serious thought to doing 3 five minute runs during my race tomorrow morning. That might be a dangerous idea, but I'm very tempted to try it. If I could do a 15 minute round with 5 quick walking, 5 fast walking (just a notch up from the quick walk) and 5 running, I suspect I could finish in 45-50 minutes or so. Otherwise, I'm looking at about 55 minutes. I'll have to see how I feel out there in the morning and maybe try a quick run to see if it hurts at all.

I'll check in over the weekend to let you all know how it goes.

Oh be careful and don't push yourself.
I ran my last 5K alone and it was actually sort of nice, I kept my own pace and could concentrate on what I was doing better.

I would recommend taking it easy at the very beginning, then running the end part, but that works for me, not sure how it would go for you.
If I run at the start I get WAY too tired, then have to slow down and end up crawling, if I walk at a very good pace at the beginning I found out I can actually do a nice run at the end and gain some time without hurting myself.

Whatever you do, pay attention to your body and don't push yourself too hard.

I have the Turkey Trot 5K tomorrow and the Jingle Bell Run next week. I am very very excited! DH is doing the Turkey Trot with me, and I am hoping to end at around 45 minutes.

 Woot! Came back from my first Turkey Trot 5K, had loads of fun, only a couple of hang ups:

1) People with bicycle strollers... the rules said NO STROLLERS, did they listen? Hmmm... no! They did take quite a bit of space on the road, so at the very end I ended up tripping and falling on my knees trying to get past a couple running abreast with a DOUBLE stroller :scared1:

2) Dogs, again, rules said NO DOGS, but there were plenty, people were getting freaked out because the friendly canines would run over to you and try to socialize. Big no-no.

Still, even though I fell, I got right up, run a lil' bit to shake the sting off, and finished with a sprint. My total time said 51:03, but I was on the back tail at the start and took me around 3 minutes to actually cross the starting line, so, that brings the grand total to 48 or so minutes, a minute and some less than my last race  :woohoo: I am sure next time I'll do much better if I don't trip, but all in all, I am very proud!!!

Hello ladies! Did the Dana Point Turkey Trot yesterday morning. It rained, no POURED (I mean a torrential downpour) on the poor 10K runners, but let up nicely prior to my Masters 5K. Just a light sprinkle at the start, then it stopped and the sun peeked out a bit by the time I finished.

My friend did flake, because she didn't want to drive down there in the rain. But, I wasn't upset, since I was prepared for that eventuality. I just can't understand why she'd train 10 weeks, then give up because of a little rain. Oh well.

Just like Chocokat's race, there were some strollers and dogs in my event, although they weren't supposed to be there. Fortunately, none of them got in my way, so I was okay. I did go with my planned 15 minute sets, so I started with a 5 minute quick walk, then a 5 minute fast walk, then a 5 minute run. On the final run, my right knee started to hurt just a bit, but the finish line was in sight, so I kept going. Seems to be mostly ok today. Really, it's just the muscles in my upper legs that are really in pain today. That's what I get for not making them do anything for 5 weeks, then forcing them to move very quickly for 3.1 miles!

So, I was hoping to get as close to a 15 minute mile as I could, so I'd know how much I had to shave off to meet the WDW 5K pacing requirement. When I crossed the finish line, it said 46:32, and I though, "Gosh, I've got to knock a minute and a half off of that." Then, I realized my timer watch hadn't gone off and that reminded me that the time on the big clock was the overall race time and not my time. So, I was pretty sure I'd more than met my goal. Later, I found the guy with the computer (and have since verified with the posted results online) and my time was... drumroll please...

44:07!!! :yay:

I'm SOOO happy with that! Means I can do the WDW 5K and come in under time! Whoo Hooo! I placed 1333 out of 1685 in my race. Not too shabby for a first timer with knee issues, huh? :cool2:

Thanks for all your support with this, ladies. You've really helped me keep positive. Can't wait for WDW in January!! :thumbsup2

Where is everyone? We dropped all the way to page 2!!!

Hello Everyone,
Honest I didn't fall off the face of the earth. Being a single parent and not having much extra $$$ for the holidays. A couple of friends invited me to do a couple of holiday bazaars with them. I did and WOW have I been one busy crafter! It helped, I paid cash for all of my Christmas gifts this year from the $ I made from the bazaars. I even sold my left overs on eBay. :0) Due to the huge amount of time I spent painting & crafting I haven't been walking much ok not at all... Boy do I miss it.

So I'm back, shoes are laces, or should I wear snow shoes are laced for my walk today. It's been freezing cold and more snow is due this afternoon and evening...

Can't wait to catch up with everyone.

Chris

Hooray! Welcome back, tole! I've missed everyone!

Congrats on paying cash for all your x-mas gifts! Way to go! Very impressive.

Just read the final instructions for the WDW 5K and discovered that it's not even timed!! WTH?!? That's a serious bummer. I understand it's not as difficult as a 1/2 or full marathon, but they could at least give us our individual times. I mean, this is the most that some of us can do! I'm really disappointed.
